I carefully cleaned them up due to the thick cad plating. They came out of the evaporust looking pretty good.

I like some of these old small ignition wrench sets. When they come with a decent pouch, it's just a nice little bonus...:)

This is my only Herbrand piece, a 13/16” spark plug socket. I’m surprised Herbrand is not more plentifully found in Ohio. It was made right up the road from me in Fremont, Ohio. I’d love to find a 5/8” spark plug socket to match this one.

New User - First time posting. Let's see how this goes:
Two great finds in as many days. Herbrand Top Box for $20.00 Even has the tote and two working keys. Just going to wash it down and lube it up.
Also found this Snap On for $200.00 Not an AMAZING deal - gut a good one nevertheless.

Can anyone give me an idea of the year for the Herbrand Box and what's up with the speckled paint?

I note a Company name change on the paperwork of image 2.

Interesting to google Bingham Herbrand and see the registration of the Multi.... Names in November 1947

AA doesn't pear to mention this interim ownership combination.

Very cool! That was made sometime after 1947, when the Bingham Stamping Company bought a controlling share, and before 1961, when the plant closed down and the hand tools division was sold to Utica, already owned by Kelsey Hayes.

Not sure what's going on with this G-25 script logo thickness gauge I picked up at the flea market this morning. It has nine blades. Per Herbrand's model numbering system, it should have twenty-five blades, which the 1937 and 1942 catalogs confirm. But I doubt twenty-five blades would fit in the holder. I posted a G-27 script logo back in 2018 (post #49, page 3). The size markings on the blades are not nearly as fancy as those on the G-25. Could be different eras. Could be blades from a different feeler gauge. Anybody else have a script logo Herbrand feeler gauge? I'd need a larger sample size to figure it out empirically.

If the PO discarded 16 blades (presumably the thinnest), then cinched down the nut, leaving that much thread exposed (yellow), the next reasonable thing to do would be to pinch the resultant bulbous end (blue), so the sides would be parallel again, perhaps explaining why there is a gap between the ends of the blades and the **** of the holder?
I have seen those thinnest blades mangled and torn up, so it might have just been a practical conservation of some utility, rather than a senseless act of violence.

I didn't think the screw and nut were original. Could be. I love the markings on the blades. Similar to Starrett and others in style in that era, but the lines are actually tiny dots strung together.

I wasn't soliciting examples to add to my collection, RJ. I want to know what the numeral markings on the blades look like. If it has a script logo on the case, and it's not overly inconvenient, please do find it and let me know if the markings look like the markings on the G-25 I posted above.

LS, All, Anyone,

How do you think the numerals were put on the blades of the feeler gauge I posted above? Not only are they interconnected dots, not solid lines, as I noted above, they are not identical. See Post #306, Pic 6. Compare the "2" in "28" to the "2" in "32". Now compare the "3" in "30" to the "3" in "32". Is it possible these blades were etched by hand? Or was the die used to mark each blade made by hand? Last time I ran into this was an antique No. 4 tempered steel rule I have, in which the same letters were not identical on the same rule.

I believe that the numbers on the feeler gauge blades were acid etched. From the look of the numbers, the "die" had a series of holes that were laid out by hand. This would be similar to "hand cut" stamping dies. There would be some room for artistic license, and with the two digit numbers applied by one "die" there is much opportunity for variation.

In order for production efficiency, the numbers would have been laid out on a mask that protected the blade except for the holes outlining the number. It would be interesting to find out if the mask was reusable, or adhered to the blade, then disposed of. Either way, the numbers were laid out on a "master" by a tool and die maker with an artistic flair!

I picked up a Herbrand S-19 1/2 drive spinner yesterday. Pretty good shape, and appears to be cadmium plated. The shape is very distinctive, and it caught my eye. It is shown in my General Tool Catalog from 1937.

I can't remember by whom, but I know that one of these oddballs has been posted before and we had a discussion about it, either here, on the DOE thread, or its own thread, but I couldn't find it searching on "Hybrand".

The consensus, as I recall, seemed to be that there was no known evidence of a Herbrand economy line or offshoot line of that name, and because the similarities of the wrench style, composition, and the name and script style logo were just too hard to ignore, that it may have been a rather bold, blatant, and audacious attempt to exploit and take advantage of the Herbrand brand as a quick foot into the tappet wrench market. I only picked it up (at the flea market this morning) for the unsolved mystery and novelty of it.

I own a set of Herbrand H- series tappet wrenches in a Herbrand roll-up that I have shown here before, but I pulled out one of the same wrenches (an H-3, 11/16" x 5/8") and took some side by side shots for comparison and bemusement.

It looks like the "crest" worked like a drag link socket, to turn a slotted thing. Perhaps an dedicated adjustment wrench for a slotted adjuster and lock nut?

That's also what I think.
Just don't know the specific application/market that was targeted.

I have a Gormully & Jeffrey end wrench (Rambler bicycles) with a blade/screwdriver tip, and I have a 'doohickey' wrench (plumbers, hydrant etc) with one, too. That one is on the outer top of the jaw of a pin spanner. Nothing on the other end, but the handle has a few different size hex openings broached inside of it. Edit >> I am on my phone. No power since yesterday noon when Isaias came through. I will post photos later this week, hopefully!

As first noted on the 2020 garage Sale thread, I picked up a tiny soft faced hammer at a flea on Thursday. I though it was a Bonney at first, because it looked so much like the Bonney in my Bonney master ignition kit, linked here. Methinks that Bonney and Herbrand and probably others were likely having them made by a third party, if I had to guess.

I picked this up yesterday at an estate sale. Now, just to find the one missing piece!
It was a screwdriver.

What you have there is an 11-piece ignition set from WWII or shortly thereafter. The first early war set was 7 wrenches. Three pairs (each opening afforded a 15* and 60* angle) and a single. The late war set was 9 wrenches (four pairs and a single), a screwdriver, and mini-pliers. I have collected several of these sets for GMTKs, almost all of them Duro-Chrome, easily the most common, along with a Cornwell, a Bonney, and an unbranded Wilde-made (41-W-900 marked) set. I have an orphan Herbrand wrench or two. Maybe. I NEVER see them in the wild. Let alone in a roll-up in that condition. Looks to be oilcloth. That is a terrific find!

EDIT: Post a photo of the wrenches out of the pouch.
