Picked up a couple postwar VAN-CHROME blues this morning at the flea. The #3 is a little chewed up by the jaws of a wrench, unfortunately.

I picked these up about a month ago. The Herbrand name is in lower case and I'm having a time trying to find out the date of manufacture. Any ideas? Thanks.

I'm going to assume that the "ON" in your location field is "Ontario", correct?

I picked up this model 482 Herbrand 20-inch pry bar at a garage sale about 30 years ago for one dollar: Herbrand 482 20-inch pry bar.jpgHerbrand 482 20-inch pry bar

Mine is stamped with "HERBRAND" and "MADE IN USA" in upper case block text.

Here's the catalog listing from the 1966 Herbrand catalog:

Herbrand 481 482 485 pry bar 1966 Herbrand catalog pp 25.JPG
Herbrand 481 482 485 pry bar 1966 Herbrand catalog pp 25

Note that the 1966 catalog only shows ONE model of the lady slipper type pry bar.

So...

Go to International Tool Catalog Library and start picking through earlier editions of Herbrand catalogs (of which there are no shortage, and unless I am mistaken this 1966 catalog I sent to them is the most recent edition they have.) And work backwards until you find those other three. Then you'll know that they can't be any younger than that.

But that doesn't answer the question about the lower case text.

Most older Herbrand stuff was marked with their logo and Herbrand name in cursive text:

Herbrand (Fremont OH) cursive LOGO.jpg
Herbrand Co., Fremont OH LOGO (cursive US production)

Later U.S. made product is marked with "HERBRAND" in the upper case plain block text (as above)

At some point, Herbrand moved production from Orangeburg, South Carolina to somewhere in the vicinity of Toronto, and adopted a weird combination of an upper case serifed "H" with lower case cursive serifed and italicized "erbrand" on some of what is believed to be Canadian production product:

Herbrand (Canada) cursive LOGO.jpg
Herbrand Co. (Canada?) late font

Your lower case pry bars are a bit anomalous. First time I've seen that.

Just a wild guess, but based on your location, it's possible those were made north of the 49th parallel.

I think you nailed it. Thank you for all the information! I am from Ontario Canada. I cleaned up the logo with some steel wool. There is no COO or part number anywhere. I had a good look today. Another piece of Canadian memorabilia!

^ Unfortunately, after Triangle Corporation took ownership of Herbrand and moved all the production facilities to Orangeburg, South Carolina in the mid-1960s, it would appear that marking every item going out the door with COO (country of origin) was not a top priority.

I own too much Herbrand from the Triangle era. I was originally of the understanding that it was all U.S. made, but after several back-and-forths with twertsy and really looking closely at the stuff, I think he may have been correct: some of their product was being outsourced, but we do not know from where.

THAT is why I very carefully wrote that sentence above - it's possible that it's Canadian-made, but I can't say that for certain, any more than I can say for certain those two sets of 3/8" drive metric sockets (pictured above) were made in Canada.

With absolutely no empirical evidence to support the claim, both twertsy and I think there's a possibility some of Herbrand's product came from points unknown that were not on the North American continent. (Is that vague enough?)

I DO own a beautiful, nicely-finished full set (shallow and deep) of Herbrand 1/4" drive metric sockets, all of which are neatly stamped "CANADA". (Absolutely no idea where they are at present, however.)

So we KNOW that the Canadian plant WAS marking stuff "CANADA" - and we know at some point they stamped stuff "U.S.A." - and we know there were several years where they just conveniently forgot to tell us where the stuff was coming from.

Clear as mud yet? ;)

below: Metric socket sets (late production, possibly made in Canada) / Herbrand Triangle-era 1/4" breaker next to some others / Herbrand Triangle-era 1/4" drive socket set typical of Triangle-era production

Clear as mud for sure but I appreciate all the information! Your tools are in immaculate condition!

Ya know, when I first saw these, I did a bit of research and my very first thought was "Did they shop these out"?

Well, they're Herbrand and they're welcome addition to my small collection of misfit tools

^ I did not notice it at first until you posted the new photos:
YOUR piece is marked with a Capital "H" and lower case "erbrand" - which follows the theme seen on those chromed metric (12-point) sockets (none of which are marked with COO - they're in a box here right next to me, as it turns out.)
Purely speculation, but I'd call that an indicator there's some relationship between your pry bar and my sockets - era or point or origin perhaps.

I would think so. I did notice that right away on the sockets you posted. They must be long lost relatives.

I cleaned up the logo with some steel wool.
Even though the capital "H" is sans serif and the letters in the lower case "erbrand" are not quite as leaning (italicized) as these 60's examples, and the entire marking ("Herbrand") on that pry bar is not nearly this stylized, I'm thinking it's meant to evoke the same theme and that it could be from the same era. At any rate, this is the logo that 4.c is referring to.

Here is a 1/2-drive Herbrand S-13 flex-head handle. It is 12 inches, and I believe the finish is/has been chrome plating.

Just picked up this Utica/Herbrand/Bonney branded toolbox today. I’d love to learn more about it. I’m guessing 60s?

Herbrand 166 1/2 Water Pump Pliers. They’re worn out and don’t stay in the detente but they were my grandads. He also had a pretty decent amount of brand sockets and ratchets that now reside at my dads house. The story goes that after he got out of the army in 1946 he went to mechanic school and they gave him the tool set which were army surplus .
