Looks like Mac (and not DeWalt, yet?) is dropping a new 12v MAX "screwdriver" that looks to be a very very compact driver (looks like an impact, but no indication that it hammers).

I have one of these in yellow, but an old brushed 12v with a 1/4 chuck and no impact function.

It's this one. It's similar, but not identical to the one you posted. I find it less useful than my real 1/4 impacts and their variable trigger coupled with my brain to control the torque applied. Now, when my fiance is driving screws or something, I give it to her on a low clutch setting...works great for that.

i love the 12v screwdriver with clutch, use it daily , especially for dash work. Its the only one i have seen with the three lights around the chuck, way better lighting that one light underneath.

The one I have has a variable trigger, and I have used it a good bit when my 1/4 impact wasn't handy. It works but I totally agree, I miss the impact option when I need it.

Yeah the three lights (same as the 1/4 impacts) is super nice but they only are on (on mine anyway) when the trigger is depressed. So You have to do that "barely touch the trigger" thing to light it up as you are getting ready to send a fastener home.

I like the fact that the thing has a 1/4 drive at least, since it's easy to swap bits quickly. I am really good at working the variable trigger and NOT letting my impacts impact so it's kinda a redundant tool for me anyway but I can definitely see how it's useful. It's really light and a little smaller so that helps I'm sure.

The brushed drill was a dealer special last year. A 12V brushless screwdriver plus charger and two batteries was $260. Included was a free 12V worklight. Mac was running a promo where you get an additional $100 off in trading in a competitors tool. A lot of dealers just give you the credit without requiring the trade in.

I hope i did the currency conversion right but $160 for a 2 battery kit plus free work light , I thought wasn't too bad of a deal

Congrats!! That's the unit I really wanted, but the DeWalt version was so much cheaper I couldn't pass it up. I got the 12V screwdriver kit (screwdriver, 2 2.0ah batteries, charger and bag) and the Dewalt version of the Mac 12V light you got, all for for $99. I really love the Mac version, but couldn't justify the price difference.

Thanks, Lowes and Home Depot dont have the same good deals up here plus I like the Mac batteries with the extra rubber molding on them

I dont mind the yellow for construction but the red sure hides the dirt, grease better. Red just looks better in a mechanics shop. I know Mac is in the UK. i imagine there is lots of competition in the German tool market

DeWalt has a patent on their yellow and black. Snap-on and Mac cordless have been red and black since day one. Red is sort of a standard shop color red toolboxes, plier and screwdriver handles

Red also has a lot of shades. Milwaukee is a different shade than Hilti which is different color than the new Craftsman. Other red cordless are Skil, CP, some of the HF brands and countless brands found on Amazon, Alibaba

Boots are available for both tools and batteries. Both of my impacts are pictured here with the boots.

I agree that the overmold is awesome, and red holds up way better in the shop. My dewalt drill will never be close to yellow again

My Mac 3/8 is nearly twice as powerful than the stubby yet not significantly bigger...if size is that much of an issue its ratchet time, which they do need to release XR versions of!

I’ve been using my brothers Snap-On 3/8 electric ratchet for the last couple of years ( He stopped wrenching professionally and stores his box in my shop ) I didn’t even tell her this was the one I wanted, since I have a bunch of black and yellow siblings to this guy.

Anyway compared to the Snap-On it’s great, feels much more stout. I need to do some actual comparisons on breakaway power and tightening power. Although it’s comparing a brand new tool to a well used one.

Sorry slow to get back to that. I haven’t done a comparison between the two yet but I have used it here and there and I am happy with it for sure. I think the Snap-On is faster as much as I hate to admit it.

I’ll get some real numbers tomorrow as far as torque capabilities tightening and loosening.

Note that I’m not a tool reviewer by any means but here is what I established comparing the two cordless ratchets.

The MAC seems to have more breakaway power from my testing which was on a 12MM bumper bolt on. I torqued it to 35 ft lbs with a HF torque wrench( probably not super accurate ) neither of the ratchets would break it loose. Loosened said bolt and torqued to 30 ft lbs and the Mac would break it loose after hitting the trigger twice to snap it loose.

The snap on would not break it loose at 30, so I torqued the bolt down to 25 ft lbs and it would snap it loose.

Both of them seemed to tighten a bolt down to roughly 30 ft lbs.

As I mentioned before the Mac does feet a lot more sturdy in your hands, it doesn’t feel like you are going to damage it by using it as a manual ratchet. The Snap-on has more flex in the body. The Mac is wider at the base and may not fit into as tight of places as the more narrow Snap-on. Here are a few of pictures for comparison in size.






From what I can tell I think I got the better ratchet with the Mac. YMMV this is just my opinion. Either one would likely service most people just fine and I think you would be pleased either way because having a cordless ratchet is one of the most convenient and helpful tools I’ve ever owned.

It really makes those tight spots a lot more manageable. I’ve got an older BMW and Geo Tracker and it really makes all the difference being able to zip off a water pump bolt or manifold bolt where you can only get a couple of turns with a traditional ratchet.

My friend's neon comes to mind. I was able to sneak my 3/8 MAC in a few places; however the rest were quite tight (both rust wise and clearance to swing a ratchet wise).

I have the 12v 1/4 ratchet, 20v 3/8 brushless impact and 20v 1/2 brushless impact. Love them all.
In Dewalt I Also have 12v clutched 1/4 bit driver, 3/8 brushed impact driver, 20v 1/2 hammerdrill and a pile of 18v tools at home.

i went on the website to see the general price of the Mac 1/2" high torque impact and it doesn't seem to exist anymore. any word on if it's being replaced with a new one? i don't even see my Mac dealer once a month to get any word on what the news is. all i know is i got the Mac 20v 1/2" brushless drill a few months ago to replace my old brushed Dewalt and it was a game changer, looking to do the same with my 1/2" impact.

yeah, i got that flier also. but, look here, it is completely absent. i'm wondering if that flier deal was so they could unload stock of this model to release a new one in the works. it is, to be fair, a little less powerful than IR or Milwaukee, and i wouldn't be surprised if they were working on improving that nut-bust-number.

Today’s buy from my MAC dealer:


Couldn’t stand the weight of my Milwaukee fuel 3/8” ratchet, so I traded it in toward a bundle they have in the current flyer. The 3/8” ratchet kit (BRS038-D2), came with the ratchet, two 2.0Ah batteries, the MCB112 charger, a pretty nice bag, and the 20pc set of Expert metric & SAE impact sockets (E041656). I’ll probably sell the impact sockets since I already have all the impact sockets I need... So far I’m loving this ratchet - it’s longer than the Milwaukee yet lighter, and most of the weight is in the base of the ratchet, which makes a huge difference. I can hear my forearms thanking me for this decision.

Also picked up the 12V screwdriver (MCF601). I’ve got the DeWalt version of this and I use it so much I wanted the MAC version too.

Last piece is the 2 piece “pocket pry bar” set, SDP2. These little guys are incredibly useful, used them already a bunch today.
