I recently bought myself a new toolbox. It's sold out of the
G2S Tobeq catalogue in Canada.
Current Promo is a free top box with the roller cabinet on the 41" size. All in it cost me about $2k Canadian (after tax & shipping). For comparison the
Husky 52" 15 Drawer which is $1200 in the US would cost about the same shipped to me here (1700 at homedepot.ca + shipping + 12% tax).
I tried to do a bit of research, and took a gamble based on the dimensions of lots of different boxes and their net weight. For example the Husky 52" combo is 52"x20"x64" and weighs 418lb, whereas this unit is 41"x21.5"x63.3" and weighs 460lb. There are no reviews out there that I could find but as far as I can tell it's the exact same box sold as the
Jet 41" Combo in Canada, and the
Husky Heavy Duty 41" Box that I don't think HD sells any more in the US or ever sold in Canada.
(If you're interested in exact drawer dimensions, check out that Jet link and look at the "Product Sell Sheet" in the "Helpful Documents" tab)
I never wanted to spend SnapOn money on an empty box and I live in the middle of nowhere so finding a 2nd hand box in the big city and getting there (3 hours each way) meant getting a deal was impossible. I was looking for months before I eventually pulled the trigger on this one.
I've had it a little over a month now and first impressions are pretty good for the price. The drawer liners are really grippy, the power bar in the top till is a nice touch and it's got lots of full width drawers with was a big part of why I chose this box. The drawers are pretty much full extension (maybe a mm or two shy). I've managed to completely empty my Canadian Tire 5-Drawer cart (USG knockoff kinda) and 26" Waterloo box I was loaned into this new unit with room to spare.
The wheels are pretty cheap and there's no lip on the bottom box. The top box is held on with 2 corner brackets in the back corners. I might be a little wary of how secure the top box is if I were planning to move it around with any regularity (but no one in our shop ever moves their box).
Quick walkthrough of the pictures:
1) Box from the outside (bonus rubbermaid which keeps my welding/grinding faceshields and snowmobile helmet)
2) Top till which is mostly paperwork, battery chargers, junk
3) Pens, welding knick knacks
4) One lonely prybar (will need to add a full set here)
5) Pliers collection
6) Combo wrenches - one of the big reasons I wanted multiple full width drawers. Would like to tinker around with the spacing and see if I can fit a set of ratcheting wrenches in the same drawer.
7) Sockets and torque wrenches; 159pc 3/8 & 1/2" Tekton Impact set, old Black Chrome Stanley 1/4" set
8) Screwdrivers, L Keys, Ratchets & Extensions
9) Air tools and my lunch table drawer (until I buy something else to put in it)
10) Power tools (M12 Stubby 3/8, M18 Brushless Drill, M18 Hackzall), Hammers and Punches
11) Electrical (Fluke Meter, Crimpers & Dies, Custom Test leads (Deutsch, Spade etc on banana plugs that go straight into the meter)), Metal working tools (rethreading, drill bits, loose taps, bolt extracots)
12) Bottom left drawer is my 1/2" drive Hex and Torx Impacts, ratcheting wrenches (light coloured canvas rollups) and a cheap set of wrenches I bought so I can bend/cut/shave a wrench without ruining my nice set. Bottom right drawer is basically nothing right now except a Mapp Pro/Propane torch. Will probably one day put a 3/4" socket set in here, maybe some diagnostic gauges etc.
Any questions or suggestions on organisation welcome!
