nice boxes

how old are they?
i had kennedy boxes when i was a machinst, and started with kennedy mechanics boxes when i started pulling wrenches.

i just never cared for the wrinkle finish :headscrat

it is 1971 or 72, I love the wrinkle finish. I drove all the way to lancaster CA from LA 1 1/2 hours and the guy had sold it even though he knew I was on my way! SOB
I listed an ad on CL looking for a vintage tool box and one hour later I was on my way to el monte CA to pick this baby up!!! I love this box it replaced a KRA three box set up

i couldnt keep my mechanics boxes clean. i eventually sanded down and repainted my kennedys.
the machinists boxes never got dirty, 'cept for some dust.

Just got this - an old Craftsman box

It says Advertising Metal Display Co. on the box behind the logo

it was partially painted brown, originally gray.
I lubed the slides and put liners in

I have several Craftsman boxes that I use full time in the garage, but when I go to the sports car races, I take this pit cart. It is small enough to fit in my trailer, but big enough to hold my tools and spare parts.

my dinosaur snap on (late 60s) with two craftsman mid boxes on the side. sorry i can't get a good picture...got a cruiser parked about a foot away. i've got just enough room to almost open the drawers all the way.

btw, all the stickers are there because the box is sooo dang ugly. it definitely led a rough life before i got it.

My Stanley FatMax tote tool bag which I bought a couple of days ago. NOK399. This is perfect for carrying around for smaller DIY stuff. Low weight, everything in plain sight, room inside for nuts and bolts and smaller parts that you're working on, easy to move around... Never thought I'd buy anything but an all metal tool box but I gotta love this one.
Will probably replace it with a Facom Probag though as that one has a cover and a little different layout, and use this one for carpenter tools.

I'd like to see that wrench holder tucked away in that tote... looks like I need that for my bucket boss assortment.... where did you get that ???

I have a 3 piece mid grade Craftsman box that I bought acouple years ago. Ever since moving up here, I have lived in apartments with no storage for a box, so I kept what I needed and then some, in a portable tote.

I am finally able to have the space for a box and got this cheap without looking around much (or for the price, i'd have a fully decked out US General box, with a lot more room and usable drawers).

Long away box shot:

Just a few of the drawers. I really need to get something bigger, deeper and taller drawers.

My USAG 285 PV8 wrench holders w/wrenches.
1. USAG wrenches 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 19, 22 mm
2. Snap-on 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17 mm
3. Snap-on 3/8", 7/6", 1/2", 9/16", 5/8", 11/16", 3/4"
4. Empty holder.
It is designed for the slim USAG wrenches so I needed to skip a slot with the Snap-on wrenches.

Edit: I bought these 10 years ago in a store and don't know if they are still available.

Hi all
Long time admirer of the site, so I thought I would add my 2 cents worth.
Just turned 20 and qualified as a BMW tech, so I thought id treat my self to a descent box, its KRA 40", it's only about 70% full at the moment but filling it is most of the fun, its mostly SO and bluepoint stuff because it gets used day in day out. Keep up the good work, some of the boxes/setups on here guys are amazing.

Can't justify buying a Snap-on or Mac as I don't have to move my box. I have noticed that you used to be able to depend on the Craftsman box to be of decent quality but that's no longer the case. The last set I bought (the red 3 piece) is of dubious quality and not built to last a long time. It'll be fine for now though. I could use one more cabinet but I'm out of room in my bay.

Your red 3 piece kit you just bought. Is it ball bearing, quiet glide or the bottom line? My black set above is the quiet glide and you are right, you cant count on the craftsman boxes to last more then acouple of years. My intermediate box is a POS with almost 2 years of light use.

Bottom line. I think I paid 275 for all three. They made me wait almost two months for it to be "built". Paint comes off real easy. I'll probably get ten years out of it though cause I'm careful. Won't hold too much weight. My others are ball bearing.

Actually-- that's a pretty good idea. Never thought of it. I foresee a new roller cabinet in my immediate future. Thanks. :D

years ago i saw a guys stack KR roller cabs to gain much needed storage in cramped truck shops.
i stacked side cabs with my kr550/555, even after i added 2 more roller cabs.
