My latest aquisition/fabrication...The top box is the 52" 8 drawer Husky from HD. It's made by Waterloo. I couldn't find a bottom box that was within my budget, so I bought 2 C-Man 26" boxes and bolted them together. It's not the perfect set up I would like, but I think I did alright-52" wide and 18 drawers for under 380.

So I finally upgraded, after almost 4 years of working out of the box I got out of grandpa's garage. It stood up good all these years, but it was just stuffed.

Used Matco MB7525, got it for $1500. Pretty decent shape, a few nicks and scratches here and there, but nothing deep, and compared to what I'd seen on craigslist around here for the past few months not a bad deal. Plus I always wanted a black-on-black Matco anyways. All the drawers slid good except the bottom two, but I took them out, cleaned and lubed them up, and now they're working fine.

And the box it replaced, a 1978 Craftsman that I'm never getting rid of (after all, one day when I have a house it'll make a good home box)
box2m.jpg

I was just about dead-set to pull the trigger on a Montezuma box, but for one, they don't make a 24" deep double-bay, only triple bay, which is a little much for me, plus they were on backorder until June in black, and even further, It's really hard for me to spend that much without being able to handle one in person.

It's so nice to have this big box, room to spare for more tools and a huge surface area for parts/paperwork/tools/whatever!

My Costco Tool Box

I bought this when Costco first came out with them. It is branded Hammerhead, 42" wide and they were $800. Really well built and I still love it. Full of Snap-On stuff as well.

I had seen a stainless steel toolbox at a car show and it was $1,800. I could not pull the trigger. About a year later, I see this toolbox at Costco while shopping with my wife. I run back and tell she HAS TO COME WITH ME NOW. I drag her over because I want her to protect it while I get a cart, as I think it is the only one they have. We get back and there is a couple looking at it and the wife says "just buy it if you want it honey". I am about ready to have a heart attack and my wife cannot see why I am freaking out. I tell her that I want this and what if the other people buy it. She points up into the rack and says that there are two more. I calmed down enough to get a cart, but I did ask her to protect what i felt was MINE.

Three years ago, they had a 54" wide one, but it was to expensive, then they discontinued it. I am still looking for a used one.

I am addicted to tools!

Heres my KRA2107B. Im almost full and dont know if i should buy the top chest for 1700 or put it towards a bigger box altogether. Im not a fan of top chests so i dunno what to do. 1700 for a piece that i dont really want is hard to do especially when i only paid 600 for the bottom.

Most of my jobs start out as an oil change or other basic maintenance so i keep my roll around simple and clean. My box is always a few steps away unless im doing alignments so i grab tools as i need them and use the cart more like a work table under the car. I had a big glorified snap on cart but it was too bulky and was more trouble than it was worth.

Man, I just love those blacked-out Matco boxes people have been putting up.

MY new black box with my old box in the back ground to the left. :p

I guess its ok to ask this question here... sorry if it's not. How many of you guys with Snap on KRL triple banks can fill a top and bottom with tools? I don't care what type of tools they are.... as long as its "tool related" Im ok with it in the box. I've seen a lot of guys with b.s. stuff in their box and complain about lack of room. I'm a big snap on tool ***** and went from a classic 78 (top and bottom) to KRL triple bank (top and bottom). I don't think I'll ever fill my KRL. Why did I go from such a big jump in size of boxes?? Tool boxes are a pain to sell. I'm having a royal PITA time selling my Classic 78. I figured let me just go for broke and get one of the biggest tool boxes there is. I got a screaming deal on the top piece and Skyline sold me the bottom piece for another great deal.

I'm really diggin' the blacked out Matco box! I like the recent posts too. And SpiderGearsMan, that's a helluva lot of tools! tkcauldill, I think a flatbed tow truck is probably one of the best ways to move a big loaded box. Better, than squeezing into the back of a Toyota pickup lol!

A few of my tool boxes. A few dollars worth of Kennedy's, all bought new and now keyed alike.

Don't organize your tools in this manner.

Or this way.

Not recommended either.

just update the pictures as i had brought a my matco MSC12 to home and bought a menards masterforce 36" bottom full wide box to work today...

i need to contact the masterforce box company to order the extra slides to put on because i had to pull bottom drawer out to use slides to double on top drawer... i has too much on first drawer but that my daily use tools...

i did swap the top two narrow drawers for deep drawer from bottom.. that why it look little odd.. BUT that work for me!!!

I was wondering about that

I like those kennedys! I have a couple used kennedys that aren't in the best of shape but I still like them and they have what little machining tools I have.

Is that yellow box a 3M fuel system cleaner? If so how do you like it? I picked up one used but haven't used it yet. Sure is expensive for the adaptors and stuff. Where do you get your chemicals from?

Kennedy makes a good box. I have a Kennedy cantilever box that is 25 years old and still works great. The yellow box is one I got from Grainger. It has to slide out organizers on the bottom, which is why I purchased it.

Harvey Melvin Richards...

I'm curious how well the old map cabinet works for tool storage.

I have, occasionally, seen map cabinets at local auctions. But the drawers have always been very shallow (~ an inch or less). The drawers on yours looked deeper than the ones I've seen locally.

Any pics in use?

Nice setup BTW !

Thanks,

Rob

The map file works great for how I use it. I mostly have small parts in there, not too well organized. I have one drawer with some of my larger measuring tools in it.

The drawers are 2.375 X 25.5 X 37.25". The slides are not full extension, so the drawers only open to 18.625. I got it for nothing, so it's worth a lot more than that to me.

^^^ Remi - I have the same box. I bought the top cabinet used in 1969. I believe it was about 4 or 5 years old at the time. I got the roller cabinet about 3 months ago. Both are in good shape and will be an easy restoration project.

I own both top and bottom as krl1003 and krl1003. It is not yet of full but it hold most of heaviest tools and specialist tools... I have parts and gaskets that keep in my craftsman bottom box... I has Menards master force bottom box to use to work everyday...

Here is my toolbox and tools. I have really just started out in this hobby and really enjoy this forum. It is not nearly as nice of a setup than most here, but I get by just fine.

My basic Craftsman box I got last year. Thought it was a great deal, then I found this forum and the Harbor Freight boxes. Almost bought one the other day but can't justify it yet.

My standard wrenches are CM raised panels and then got a set of GW flex and regular.
kdk_0017Large.jpg

My 1/4" and 3/8" is all Gearwrench, just got the HF trays, not sure if I like them or not yet. The 1/2" standard is on a rail. They were covered in rust when I got them and cleaned them with white vinegar but need to work on them some more. They are functional but all 12pt. There is an older Snap-On F710 3/8" ratchet in there, and I do like it and use it regularly.

My Craftsman set I've had for a long time. I've used these a lot and now throw them in my car when I travel.

A little Craftsman 1/2" set I picked up at Sears on sale a while back.

This is what my wrenches look like now after the wire trick I read here. It does save space and keeps everything in place nicely. So thank you all for the tips and information I have gotten here.
kdk_0025Large.jpg

I just got that compressor and have a complete set of Sunex Impacts in 1/2" drive on order and am shopping around locally for a nice IR 231c. Should work out well I think.

Here are my tool boxes.

shed004.jpg

They may not look like much but they have alot of history to them. They belonged to my grandfather (my Fathers Father) and they were in his shed/workshop as long as I can remember. I remember going to his house and out into his shop with him, I also remember getting tools out of them for him while he was working on stuff when I was little. When Poppop passed away his shop sat for about 18 years untouched. My father asked me to go down with him to clean out the house and shop when My grandmother passed away about 2 years ago. While cleaning out the shop Dad told me I could take what ever I wanted. So I packed up almost everything in the shop and brought it home including the tool boxes full of tools, vise just out of the pictured on workbench, the wall of hardware, and a really heavy work bench which is in my basement as a hobby bench (HO scale trains). I found out when packing up the tool boxes that they were purchased by my father when He worked as an automechanic and he was the one who put most of the stickers on them. When he was injured and had to give up automechanics he gave the boxes to his father, who kept them all those years. The bottom door on the bottom box is only put on to secure the box so Poppop made a wooden door to secure it in the shop. I still have the original metal door and locking bar. I have owned a Mac and Snap On toolboxes, but they are special to me and will stay with me until I pass them on to my sons.
