Well, here's my work box. Keep in mind, I'm an aircraft mechanic, so only SAE tools needed.

It's actually filled now, I need the top box, or another base unit. I'm currently undecided what I'll get.

Finally, somebody who likes DAY GLO GREEN!!! LOL! Wow, thats a cool wood top and side cabinet; did you make it all yourself? Did you custom fab the casters and create a bottom frame; was this a requirement in your shop or make it easier to roll around versus the stock casters? What did you pay for your pro box and do you like it; does it have grip later drawers or dentents? Does the aircraft industry require the foam inserts to confirm tool security and eliminate engine damage? Sorry for the questions (too many!), you have a unique setup there!

Both are boxes anybody should be proud to own. I thought the Chevy emblem on the home box was a nice touch.:)

This is the box I have at home. TBH its useless. Its far to small. I have other 'barn style' boxes filled with tools as well. The spanner double depth drawer in these pictures, I haven't used any of the spanner sin it in years, some are still new. Most of my tools are elsewhere so i can use them often or at work. There are no spanners I sue in this box, they won't fit most of them, or more precisely their racks won't fit.

I also think I'm the first with a Beta box in this thread

I NEED something bigger so I can get rid of the various plastic tubs, barn boxes etc etc so they are all in one place here at the house.

Could be, but hey every other picture people have posted seems to work. When I quoted him, it showed the links for the pictures, so I tried to copy and paste directly to my browser, still no go. Oh well......

Yes, I made the top and cabinet myself. The top is actually an old solid core oak entrance door. It was a 36" door, which left me just enough room to cut the door knob holes out. I took some 1x3" oak and routered it, then cut it down on the table saw so that it sat over the top. I love having the lip on there, it keeps tools from rolling off all the time.

The frame is 2x2x.25" angle iron, and 2x2x.125" square tube with 3/8" steel plates for the wheels, which are actually bending. I'm going to have to redo them eventually. They seemed to have work hardened themselves and stopped bending. The wheels are 8x2" Colson casters. They roll MUCh better than stock, go right over air hoses and power cords, and in 6 years that I've had it, I have NEVER had one screw or rivet stuck in the wheels, it just spits them right back out. In contrast, on my other Craftsman box, I had to clean the screws and rivets out of the wheels once a week.

The box ran me $1800. They were on sale for $2300, and I jumped on it. The first box I ordered, Sears sold to somebody that just walked in.
The second box had the same happen.
The Third box somebody had speared through with a forklift.
The fourth box showed up, and my truck was in the shop. A co-worker offered to help and meet me there with his pickup. I called Sears, and told them that we would be there at 2:30, and we HAD to be gone by 3:00. They said no problem. We show up at 2:30, and a semi is backed up to the dock unloading, and they say "oh, it should be done within 45 minutes". At that point I completely flipped out. I called the District Manager and told him that the box WILL be $1800, it WILL be delivered by them between 2:30-3:00 pm the next day, the delivery WILL be free, or they can take their box and shove it, after I had waited 6 weeks for one.

It has the grip latch drawers, I love them. I'm not a big detent fan, and the Snap-On setup pisses me off. The foam isn't a requirement where I work, but I like it. It sure helps not to lose tools when you go through your drawers at night and see a big blank spot somewhere. Even my box at home is going to be done this way.

Nissan-crawler: wow, but i did not see any sockets in your toolbox ar airport?? why you dont like the orignal craftsman casters(6) on your box??

10th picture down.

I think Nissan-crawler maybe lowered his box as to roll under the wings of aircraft, just a guess?
Yep. The 8" casters roll over things easily, and don't pick up screws or rivets. The frame helps keep it low, and also takes stress off the box. Even with a 2" thick top, and 8" wheels instead of 6" wheels, my box is 3/4" shorter than a stock one. It makes getting under wings and such easy, and it also makes for a great work surface height.

nissan crawler, that is a SWEET screwdriver drawer! You join my top 3 along with Merkava and Moose. I also really like your homemade add-on; looks good, seems very effective.

I have a guy in our shop who has a frame like that under his beach toolbox,he did it to lower it enough to see into the top chest-he's a little on the short side.

What's small about the socket selection?
1/4 drive, Craftsman 5/32-9/16" short and deep sockets
3/8 drive, Craftsman 3/8-7/8" short and deep sockets
1/2" drive, Craftsman 7/16-1 1/4" short sockets

1/4" drive snap on 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16" swivels.

3/8" drive Craftsman crowfeet 3/8-1"

3/8" drive Snap-On flare nut crowfeet 3/8-3/4"

1/2" drive Snap-On 2" crowfoot.

Oh, and one 1/4" drive 10 mm socket. That and a 6mm allen wrench are the only metric tools I have at work.

My box is 56"x30"x42". As for not being as strong as Snap-On, possible, but I'm not convinced of that. Either way, no C-Pro box at work has ever failed, so what's the point of spending money on Snap-On?

Nissan: Very impressed with your box! I think that should be used as a example of what a Cman Pro box can take. That sucker has to be heavy!!

Also, lovin the screwdriver drawer and the wrench organization!

i just dont understand why you have a lot of wrenches than sockets? i thought ratchat and socket do contact better than wrench?? I am respect you as your box are look great and clean... i just cant afford to pay full price from sears which it made me look for low price from snap on guy to offer me. 450 dollars for top KRL1203 (craiglist) and 1500 dollars for KRL1003...

Lots of aircraft stuff is tubing and such, not just nuts and bolts. Wrenches get used a lot.

I have:
1/4-1" C-Pro wrenches
1 1/16-1 5/8" Craftsman wrenches

1/4"-1" gear wrenches (soon to be through 1 1/4")

1/4"-5/16" Snap-On double box end

3/8-7/8" SK double box end (never use these unless I have to, I hate them, going to get c-pros one day)

3/8-3/4" snap on 4 ways

13/16 - 1 1/4" HF wrenches heated and bent to 30/60 angle.

3/8-7/8 Craftsman tappet wrenches

3/4 - 1 5/8" GRIP service wrenches (also referred to as bonney wrenches)

With the exception of the Sk's, I use wrenches of each type almost every day. I actually prefer to use my gearwrenches over my Snap-On ratchets if I can.

I wouldn't have minded a used Snap-On box, but I can't have a chest, only a cabinet, and to find a used Snap-On 40,000 sq. in. cabinet for under $4,000 here is impossible.

Oops, I have 3/8-3/4" stubby gear wrenches, forgot about them. I also have some cheap HF wrenches that are cut in half for stubbies. These are for what's known at work as a "jackoff wrench". It's hard to explain...

Ah, I found some like it: http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...0&group_ID=544&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog

It's like that, except mine are homemade, and I use one handle with a pin to swap wrench ends, they also don't ratchet. But, my 1/4-3/4" set, cost me $8 to make.:lol_hitti

What situations do you need the "t" looking tool for; special limited access, inside airframes etc? Seems that every unique industry always could use tools that people do not make or the ones they do are very expensive. We had an older guy in your trailer shop who made a number of unique tools that really helped rebuilding tractor trailers; there is always someone who will take the extra step to do this.

Too early in the morning (slept like .....), could you post a picture of it sometime. HF had a 1/4" version of that for a socket, that I thought could be handy in a couple of spots (I remember one PITA vehicle with a bracket below, obstructing the transmission pan).

Thanks

Sometimes on engines or airframes, you only have a tiny hole to snake the tool through, but might have to take a bolt out that's 10" in. Something like this helps you do that. They **** to use, but if you need it, nothing else will work.

It's pretty much the same as the one in the link I posted, except there's a clevis on the handle, and I just cut the wrenches in half and drilled a hole in the end. I just use a pin and a hairpin clip to hold the wrench on.

Here are my 2 Craftsman toolboxes. 40" side by side. Never did like reaching up into top cabinets.
IMG_5101.jpg

Here's a shot of my old "tool cabinet" I had while I was still figuring out my shop layout. I stored power tools etc in it. Stainless unit on the right. It's an old commercial Fridge/ Freezer unit I got form a friends restaurant business. The compressor unit was bad so I gutted it and used it for a tool storage cabinet or 5 years. It has bakers racks inside so I was able to configure the shelves however I wanted to. It worked out great but eventually took up more space that it was worth any more. SPACE IS A PREMIUM IN A SHOP!
IMG_4454.jpg

It is now retired and has been recycled at the local metals facility. I kept the doors as the skins are going to be my new counter tops on this counter area that has replaced it.
