Yikes 15 flat rate, I'd rather work farm labor. All of our flat rate techs make over 20, on 26 and our foreman 28. My buddy was offered 27 at a different shop, and an ex coworker left to that same shop for 29 flat rate. We're ever you are for 15 flat rate....get out you're being ripped off.

Hey everyone, Just popping in to say what's up. I'll get a pic of my cart at work soon, after I clean it up.
But on the 15 flat rate, I make 12 hourly doing oil changes, so if your 15 flat rate, that's pretty bad. the 2 techs that just moved up to flat rate, from lube tech, make $17 F/R :dunno:

ive been in the industry 10 years, the last 2 at the same job, i make 9.50 an hour. my head tech only makes around 17 when he gets his flag time. the other flat rate tech only makes about 15 when he gets his flag time. they have to flag a minimum of 30 hours to get their flag time, other wise they make just about the same as i do.

the tools the shop supplies are brake lathes, and flush machines, an a/c machine, bench grinder, wash tank, and some tables. everything else must be supplied by the techs.

$15 an hour sounds kinda nice at this point.

oh, and what does all this have to do with tool boxes?

Sorry we're hijacking the thread but what do you do for $9.5? I saw your tool cart posted in another, that's insane they want you to have a tool box for that. Awhile ago they were advertising 12.5 an hour at Aldi's for a cashier. Im a machinist so I can't say what they make around here but they all seem broke. If the shops change what, 60 an hour shop rate, they should be able to handle 20 an hour.

It just sounds like some are jealous or mad or something at some of the tool box set ups posted on this thread.

There are several states/cities where a good tech can and does make good money. Sorry if others are making below whatever quoted $15 average is. I guess that an be right cause a lube tech in West Virginia probably make min wage a lube tech in a High volume rich area may make 15

Back to the tool boxes

One thing I do notice is the Matco box powder coat seems to be more reflective with more gloss than the snap on. This is comparing my JSC750 and EPIC 68" in blue.

i do everything except major diagnostics and engine work. not cuz i cant, but because why do it when the flag guys will make more money than i would. i hand them off the big stuff like that.

typical day im doing anything from oil changes and fluid exchanges to brakes to minor electrical, tire balancing, a/c, thermostats, cooling fans, etc.

honestly unless its something like intake gaskets or major time consuming projects im doing it.

Should be able to...yes, but if you can fill the position, and pay $9.50, why would you pay $20 an hour? Not saying it's right, but from a business perspective why would you pay more than you had to for the position. If turnover or quality candidates becomes an issue, you can alway raise the pay. If it's not, you can simply pay the going rate and adjust accordingly.

Yea thats true, I'm just surprised that anyone would do it for 9.50 when you could make more at Aldi's, but if you don't want to work at aldis(not sure I would) then I guess it makes sense.

Just picked up yesterday to relieve my main toolbox, bought some mdf from homedepot, threw the vise on, left the protective film on in case I want to sell it down the road, cheap box so the cheap stuff goes inside

Quick Lube places around here pay that. My buddy started as a Porter making $13 a hour. No way I would take a job as a tech making only $9.50 a hour

If Aldi's would let me put my tool box next to the cash register I would work there.

We're not arguing, just discussing. No I don't think I would do that for 9.50 either. But if your happy thats all that matters.

what I'm surprised at, is that he says he's only at 9.50 an hour and he has been there 10 years...

in the industry 10 years, at this job for 2.

there is no aldi's anywhere i know of in arizona, i dont even know what that is.

i made almost a dollar more 5 years ago as a lube tech/ shift supervisor than i do now.

it took me a year to get my 90 day raise. im up for another review in may and i should be over 10 by then. keep in mind too this isnt flag time, or flat rate, its HOURLY. in other words i get paid for every minute im there, wrenching or not. my flat rate co workers only get their flag time pay if they go over 30 flag hours, which is sporratic. sometimes i make more than they do.

i thought this thread was for tool boxes not who makes what and how/ jealosy of expensive snappy boxes because we're broke and cant afford em. i could care less if someone spends 60 grand on a toolbox. i would if i could afford it too. am i jealous cuz i want one? NATURALLY.

as for guy with the stainless mastercraft box, i like the MDF and vise up there. looks cool. why MDF thow why not something a little tougher? 3/4 treated plywood perhaps? sheet of 1/2 steel?

i'll be stepping off my soap box now, but before i do:

there. now you guys google your state's average automotive mechanic's salary and lemme know where you stand.

All right this is my last post on the subject, yes it sounds like wages are lower there. I wasn't and I don't think anyone else was trying to make you feel bad. You know what's best for you and in your area. But on a side note, if you don't want to talk about it don't post that you make 9.50 an hour.

Love SnapOn boxes. You might out grow it, but I have never seen one wear out even after years of use/abuse.

In all lite-heartedness, there is a new tool in the box. Just giving you a hard time.

That's not what pisses me off the most:

Average Automotive Technician salaries for job postings nationwide are 41% lower than average salaries for all job postings nationwide.

That there is the only way I will buy a box, if the dealer won't stand on the bottom drawer to back up his product then it's no worth my money.back when I had a matco dealer I back out of a deal for a new box because he wouldn't stand on the bottom drawer, after two weeks of working on a deal he couldn't close it.both snap on and Mac stood on the bottom drawers.

the whole standing in the drawer thing just seems so gimmicky to me...
