That's it I guess. Adding the portable gives me more room to add some more. Some day I hope to go for the big HF box or maybe two and make a workbench.

First post here, been lurking around for a few months now. 21 year old tech from Clyde, Ohio. About 30 min south of Cedar Point.

First box was a Classic 78 SO. Quickly outgrew that box and took it home for my garage. I upgraded to a Matco 4s, Triple Bay next.

After almost 2 years, I was itching for a new box, so I waited for a deal. Matco came out with this purchase a 5s and get 1000$ instant cash for tools. So I custom built this box. I pondered a KRL or this box for awhile as my SO dealer said he could do the 1000$ ever-so famous EC rebate. But settled on the Matco due to many techs I know telling me they prefer the Matco box. Secondly, I am not fond of the Lock n' Roll drawer detents on the SO boxes and preferred the Matco style detents. Anyways here she is! I will snap some drawer pictures tomorrow and post them up.

Needless to say, I love my new baby.:thumbup:

Hi guys and gals, just me again. I had a couple questions (sorry if answered somewhere). Like i mentioned before my dad and I just started a restoration shop and my dad basically gave me a little spending money to get my own box and tools, I am more the "business" guy of the company if you get me lol, although no stranger to tools and garages and most def not new to cars (vintage/classic & exotic cars & motorcycles are my passion), anyways to the point, like i mention in a past post I decided on a 44" hf box so i could spend more on tools since the $3k limit I had wouldnt go far in tool land. I am still setting up and organizing her but Ill post pics soon, my question though is, yes I now have a tool box in the shop, but should i spend company money on a true "shop box"? or do ALL mechanics bring their own, and even so, should i still spend the money on a shop only box and tools? If so, has anyone used a Redline Engineering box? They are a USA Christian company and would love to equip some of their equipment in our shop, but I need to know its truly quality for my guys because the last 2 months they have put up with our 2 HF motorcycle lifts ( their calves thank me though! lol) and sand blasters lol, were a start up lol, we used what we had! But now that we have work and working capital i have decided to upgrade our equipment and was curious about the box thing. Also Redline carrys other brands too so I think i will grab two Titan Elite 2 post auto lift and (most likely) two Redline engineering commercial pneumatic cycle lifts they make. I am also for sure grabbing their Blasting Cabinet. I will toss a couple pics of the box i am thinking about for the shop box. it is 60"x22"x5'8" and although usually $1400, I will be getting one for around 1200 shipped which sounds great for a 60" american made box! So lemme know some input on all that. :)

Thanks Folks,
Rich

Rich, I'll just ask this...are you sure it's a USA made box. Here's why I ask...the drawers look VERY similar to the HF box you just bought. Now, that's not a bad thing mind you, but I am really interested to know if that's the case. Here's another reason I question that...

http://www.gregsmithequipment.com/Full-Tool-Box-Sets

They sell what looks to be an identical box (although in a slightly different color), and there is no mention of USA made. In addition they sell a version of the HF box too. The HF box goes under a couple of different names like Atlas, Homak, US General, ect. This is a bigger version obviously, but certainly appears to be made in the same factory.

In the end, just verify that's it's a USA made box, I hope it is!

hrmm, ya that does look identical. I guess I will need to look deeper into that. It ***** so many american companies buy across seas and stamp a american brand on it! kinda frustrates me tbh lol.

thanks,
Rich

I have the same box and it's not a 60" box unless you include the handles.
Mine is a Torin and I purchased it at TSC in Canada for $999+tax, picked up.
I'm very happy with it and I see it lasting a lifetime but it's not a US box.

I won't tell you whether or not you should supply general tools for your shop, but I will give some suggestions if you do decide to do it.

First, don't bother with common hand tools. Let your mechs supply their own. If you're going to spend company money on tools, then concentrate on the expensive stuff that your employees might be afraid to shell out money for.

Second, paint everything PINK !
Box, tools, everything. They will be less likely to walk away, and be easier to spot if they start to live in someone else's box. Or if you need to send someone packing. In addition, the shame of working with a pink tool may encourage your mechs to upgrade their own tool inventories for stuff they borrow more often.
I did this at a company I was a manager for, and my annual tool losses went from $500-$600 a year down to under $100. It fell further as I and the other employees got into the habit of teasing carpenters found having to use pink tools. All of a sudden, they started showing up with their own tool bags.

Mac MB1700 I picked up last week. Box is in great shape and was only used in the previous owner's personal garage. At last I can put all my tools in one place.

Top box is a small Aero Industries box

I just picked up a Snap-On KRA-53A from an auction...$40. Now, do I powder coat or just leave with a patina??? How much to powder coat? How does the logo attach to the case?

Powder coating should run about 80.00 to 125.00. The emblem should have studs and a nut on the back of the lid

Both boxes look nice.
What country is the top box made in ?

Thanks upgrading,

The top box was made in Mayville, NY USA by Aero Industries. They are no longer in business. I believe they went out of business in the 90's. I think the people that had Aero were previously involved with Yorktown/Matco in Jamestown NY.

Very nice for $40 . Personally I would just clean it and use it. I like the patine and yours looks to be in really good condition. The logo comes off with two twist like nuts on the back side of the badge. Carefully lift up the lid/front cover and use a nut driver to remove the badge. Be careful when handling the badge they are not available new and are $$$ to replace via ebay.

The speed nuts on my topper were lost years ago, but I saved the logo. The replacement speed nuts were pennies at the local hardware store.

Gotta start by saying THANK YOU to everyone that has posted pictures in this thread.

I have had a life long love of tools and a strange compulsion to wrench on my own cars. It has been many many years since I've paid a mechanic to fix something for me.

Yes, this is a wooden tool box that is a work in progress. The drawers are 52"x24" as that is all the space I have for the box. I've used 3/4" plywood and 1x4 pine from Home Depot and 24"x 200# slides from Rockler.

Anyway, I have other boxes that I'll get to another time, but for now, let's call this my Metric Box.

Most of my tools are old Craftsman or better. I do have several sets of Snap On, Cornwell, Blackhawk, and Mac. ....some 32 socket sets in this box alone.

Drawer with a complete set of 6.0 injectors........that's not strange.

Yeah there's a little cash in that drawer, those are from a current head gasket job I am finishing up tomorrow morning. 2 injectors stuck open and the customer kept driving, "only 15 miles he swears", you be the judge. Cylinder Numbers 3 and 5.

By the way our machine shop called us after they checked the heads, the Bank 1 head with these 2 cylinders, was completely broken between the 2 cylinders. All in only 15 miles huh? :willy_nil

VERY cool!

Thank you. Friends think I'm a little off when I ask them if I can show them my tools. To me tools are money in the bank. If I can get them below retail it's all the better.

For example, my Cornwell 1/2" drive deep impact metric set was $65 at the pawn shop by my office. It was virtually untouched and came with various SK extensions I didn't think were a bad bonus. Truck price is right at $300....Ouch. I did alright on that purchase and use them all the time.
