Wow, you guys have some nice garages and workbenches. I'd be ashamed to post pics of mine, I'd have to clean it off before you could even see it....lol. Really bad about throwing tools on my work bench during projects and not cleaning up. Got a few days off from work coming up. You guys have inspired me to clean the shop up and get better organized. Maybe I'll take some pics then...thanks for sharing.

Post them up, then post more after you clean and organize. We all start somewhere, 12 1/2 years ago, I didn't own a garage.

My (currently messy) livingroom / workshop, where my regular workbench lives. It was a gift from my wife when we got married (only 3.5 years ago). From the 1930s or 40s, I think. When I got it, it reeked of motor oil. The decal is mostly worn and illegible, but on the front it says, "Clean bench at end of each shift." The surface measures 60"x28" and the drawer can be moved to several positions to the left or right. Industrial green.

Post up!

If it makes you feel any better... here's mine in a total flustercluck state. I have since added some pegboard and a shelf behind it to help ease the clutter.

I just oiled up a new maple top, so nothing is mounted but the drill press yet, but you get the idea. This is my primary gunsmithing / reloading area. The towers are 7 drawer Lista's, circa 1980.

Usually the bench is full of ****, but I cleaned it off to work on some new lamps. Can't think when it gets cluttered. I put up a pegboard a few weeks ago. Makes life lots easier.

I need to follow the rule of "Clean your area when done". So much time is wasted looking for an item I set down somewhere to find it under other stuff I have grabed.

Good rule to live by. For the 'minutes' it takes to clean up, you gain in efficiency finding it next time. Also, when the work area or tool box is clean, you tend to keep it that way. I know where every tool is I own.

I recently decided to build a bench for my basement room. I picked up this door today to use as a top for $50. It is 80" x 36" and solid. I am driving out tomorrow to look at these surveyor drawers for $50 a piece. They are 40" wide and 30" deep. Seems like a good combo? What do you guys think? My only concern is just how deep the drawers actually are.

We use drawers like that in the print shop I work at. I like them. They'll hold quite a bit but be careful not to overload them.

This is what it looks like at the moment. Hopefully within the next few months I will find the time to build myself a nicer workbench. I want a 6'x6' L-shaped workbench.

Here is mine. I'll get a better pic tomorrow after I get me Beetle out in the sun for a while.

Here is one of my benches. All wood 2x6 top with a 1/4" rubber mat. I use this one for lots of different stuff. Mostly Carburetor rebuilding and small engine tear downs and testing. I even have 5 holes drilled in the top for vertical shaft motors so I can bench test them. I just pull back the mat and bolt it down. I'll have to try and get my welding table cleaned up tomorrow and snap a pic of it.

As of last night, under construction. I still have to add more cross-beams and sheath it (7/16" osb shelf, doubled up 7/16 top with masonite top). The sheathing will fit down below the edges of the 2x6's with a lip to keep hardware from rolling away to nowhere. I can walk all over it without breaking a sweat (I'm 300lb) and the building vibrates if I hit it. It's 8.5' long, 3' at the wider point, 2' otherwise. My roll-cabinet fits at the end. Alot of the lumber was salvaged from some poorly thought out (but built with heavy lumber) shelves elsewhere in the garage. I used 2x6's and 2x4's from those shelves and will be using the 1x12's for shelves. I have some cupboards I may put up, but they're kinda weak. Will for sure add task lighting.

Edit: I was on the phone with my stepdad last night and he randomly says "do you need a vice, because I picked up another one?" Of course I said yes. I'd already been hunting for an antique one and had strategically built up part of the bench for one. As he's always hunting/picking antique signage, tools, etc... I'm excited to see what treasure of a vice he's found for me.

Here is my workbench, was my first project and used ideas from multiple sites online.

It's a work in progress as well as you can see from the addition of the TV mount stereo system and additional storage.

Always looking for cool ways to upgrade my bench, so if you have any ideas please share!

Here is my latest update on my work in progress workbench. I added some more surface area as well as enclosing my stereo system.

Here's a before and after. I got it from Craigslist for $20 and the vice for $5. I couldn't have bought the lumber for that price. All it took was some filler, sanding, paint, and satin polyurethane.

Here are some shots of mine, L shaped with a big stainless double basin sink from our dairy after we closed it down. 9 drawer snapon on the bench with easy to reach tools while I am working around the bench. Two shots of the tool room one looking in and one back out toward the bench.

This is my 8' bench and there are two 4'ers just like it. The pegboard & lights are attached to a frame on the benches and not to the walls. I can roll all of my benches around for cleaning or projects.

Hello, this is my first post. I'm adding onto my garage next summer and thought I may need some advise. This is my bench.
