I built my woodowrking bench a few years back and it has served me well for woodworking and general whatever is going on in the shop. It has a ton of storage and it's jamb packed with tools and such. It's made from white oak with mortise and tenon constuction for the base. The top is actually 3 layers of 3/4" mdf laminated together with 1 1/2" white oak edge banding and a piece of white oak plywood for the work surface. The top is 42"" x 99". It has the big Jorgenson vise with 3" solid white oak face. All the drawers are all on 100lb slides. The thing weighs nearly 800 lbs. empty so it's a rock solid platform to work on for whatever the project is.

Here's some construction pics....

And here is the finished product......

I made solid white oak raised panels for all of the doors and the end panels...

I have my most used tools stored in the drawers in front...

Chisels/scrapers and such drawer...

The ends of the bench have pull out storage trays for assorted tools..

Rear center compartment has hand planes and more chisels etc...

All in all it was a really fun project and I'd be totally lost without it now that I've worked on it for years.

Thanks for looking!!!

More fantastic benches (and ideas) to look at guys. Thanks!

Ok, as part of my therapy and promise to be a better GJ person here is my horribly messy basement workshop with my benches, as requested for this thread. Showing these will horrify my wife and prod me into being more organised. Look at the Can-am garage...it is possible!

Here is Dad's workbench. Always lived in our basement workshop. Originally was part of a dining room set. My sister has the table and chairs to this day.

My primary workbench was build by my Dad's friend (RIP) at my request. It was my first reloading bench, and is now a general purpose place to work.

Third, bonus picture, is a tool and parts chest made by my Uncle (RIP) who provided many of my tools, basic knowledge of electronics and other things mechanical.

Hopefully this posting gives me final push to get the temporary storage relocated, items put away or tossed and the basement workshop returned to its former glory.

I can do it!

Not mine but I'm almost sure I found it on here at some point. I'd love to see know more about it, before I shamelessly copy it!

How tall is everyone making there workbenches? I'm a big guy at 6'5 and don't want be hunched over, but also don't want to be too high, right now my current bench is 41" to the finish top. Too high, too short?

Make it taller than you think you'll need. You can always make it shorter.

A good rule of thumb is to not go higher than your standing elbow height. Depending on what you're working on, you can adjust downward from there.

Work surface heights:

Think of the modern kitchen. It is loaded with work surfaces but they seem to always be close to one of the following three heights:

Table: 30 inch

Counter top: 36 inch

Breakfast bar: 41 inch.

I usually build benches, weld tables, etc at one of these three heights depending on the function I intend to use the surface for.

For a work bench, I would go 36 inch.

My workbench is custom built to my height! My buddy's come over and whine and can't use it. I was tired of leaning over all day on the little people benches:lol_hitti

Been a while since I posted, so here is my bench at work. Made it from scratch.
Measures 1800mm wide 800mm deep and 900mm high.

It's usually personal preference. I like a taller than normal benchtop but I'm over 6' myself. I can sit comfortably at my bench too.

The same goes for the depth of it too. What are you doing at the bench, what's above it and what else sits on the bench.

Are you going to put something on the bottom? If no, you have a major dirt catcher.

Plan right now is to put 3/4 plywood on bottom and add casters to move for cleaning. Will also be adding Racedeck flooring in that room, additional wall cabinents, shelves, electric and air outlets. Still have quite a ways to go.

Thanks for noticing.

Not to much to tell. It was originally one of 4 bedrooms and a small hallway. I tore out the hallway wall which was solid concrete, quite a job with just a 20# sledge. Built a loft for storage which also holds my air compressor. ran air to the bench and the 12x40' car port that is behind the workbench and out to the deck. I inclosed the car port by building some swinging garage doors built out of 2x6 tongue and groove. That space now holds my 23' Chris Craft project. Next year I will be building a similar sized space next to it to hold the boat. Then I will have the original 12x40 space as work area. Beyond the wall where the fridge is there is a long hall way leading to a large covered deck that we enclosed last year. Part of that hallway will also become shop space. Mike

My main garage bench has gone from the first photo to the made over one in the remaining pics. I still have some painting to do on the extensions to have them somewhat match the center bench.
