36" deep, 38" high and 12' wide.

As I was building it I was afraid it might be too deep but am very happy with the extra room. I have a smaller bench about 16" deep on the opposite side of the garage.....I'm thinking I'll move the vice over there since the depth isn't really an issue.

Long-time lurker, here .. and the thing that finally flushed me into the open is an observation I think might spark some interesting discussion. Given the opportunity to go in either direction, do more folks prefer to store their commonly used tools (open/box wrenches, screw drivers, sockets and related stuff) on a wall ... or in a drawer? And, of course, why?

For me I like them in a box. I haven't figured out a way to roll the wall closer to what I am working on. I do mostly automotive stuff though. I suppose woodworking would be a different story.

great looking cabinets, can you show us a good shot of how you made your cabinet door slider tracks? and what is the ********* thing against the wall?

hobie1dog: I bought the slider tracks in a shop that sales all kind of stuff for cabinets, doors, closets, etc. I'll post some photos asap. There are two black things against the wall, one is an old frige, but the other really big is the garage door itself! 5 m wide (about 15 feet)

My first post of pics. This was built using nothing but scraps and measures 3' x 16'. I need to put cabinets above it to store the lady's camping gear and then put doors on the face of most of it. 2 open sections to be able get to the frig and the kerosene torpedo. It's a start.

SuitersGarage: So, why do you think so many (but definately not all) workbench areas are set-up with peg-board arrangements? From looking at this thread it doesn't appear to be woodworking vs. automotive application based.

I prefer pegboard. I don't have a box, so it was cheaper to buy a $17 sheet of pegboard and 2 2x4's than it was to go out and buy a box. Plus, the pegs are easily changeable, and you can see when you're missing something. There are some things that I do want to protect a bit more like my chisels and my plane, but I'll eventually make boxes for those to hang around in.

That's just my preference. I don't worry about theft since the garage has no windows, and it's a 1 car tandem garage, so I'm never more than like 15' from where my tools are.

I can only speak for myself as to why I have tools in a box rather than on peg board. I use my walls for shelving and am out of wall space. My garage is automotive for the most part. Being self employed as a one man contractor I do use it for construction stuff from time to time. I also do automotive repairs for customers although I would rather just have the garage for myself. So I keep a lot of supplies on hand. If I did not work out of my garage I could see hanging tools and showing them off at the same time.

As far as the woodworking vs automotive - peg board vs tool box goes...when I work with wood I would rather have my stuff hung up. But when I work with wood in the garage the woodworking tools get brought in, used, and taken out when I am done.

As you can see my garage gets used kinda hard.

For me, the choice was already made. We're renting this place and the garage already had two full walls of pegboard.

I'll be adding more to the bench this weekend, I downloaded the free version of Google SketchUp took a few hours to learn how to use it but i got all the measurements I needed for the corner bench.

From that to this, I cut the steal up today at work, I'll tack it all up tomorrow and weld it all up on Sat, should work out ok I think..

2 x units Mate, 1200 long x 600 high x 200 deep. Peg boards inside too but I only use them for the shelves to store stuff..

I've been holding back the urge to sticker the **** out of them.

I welded the bench out of 2" square tubing and the top is 1/2" plywood with 5 2x6's screwed onto it, (strong enough to place a big block V8 on it). I hung my most used tools on the wall. The rest are in a stainless rolling toolbox.

There are 2 roller doors in front of the bench leading out the front and 1 next to the bench leading outside out the back, the door is a rear outside door also but I haven't used it in 5 years, so covering it up isn't an issue..

PS I swear its NOT a **** dungeon!!!

Just finished building it. Still need to pick up a few more air fittings for the air manifold as well as work out a better vise mount.

Nice stuff guys! I like that JEGS mat! I have a similar mat on my workbench for working on locks. Keeps all the parts together and all the gunk in one place.

Here is my pride and joy. I built it using only hand tools and the only hardware used are twin screws for the front vise and the end vise. I have been known to rebuild car parts on this bench, but I purchased baking sheets from from a restaurant supply store and lock those between bench dogs to preserve the top. My two car garage does double duty between woodworking and car/motorcycle rebuilding and modifying.

I need to do some detail work on the chops and replace the end vise chop."></a>

My next one is a wall mounted work table. I have limited space to work in and had to get creative. I have two more work benches planned and will post those when complete.

Jawn - Thanks.

Icecactus -Thanks. I am kind of on the fence when it comes to outfitting my garage. I have worked with wood for years and I am interested in welding and metal fabrication. Like most people, I am only working with a two car garage. It's a juggling act! Everything I have has casters except my cabinet maker's bench. If you any questions about getting into wood working, I may can give you some pointers.

added a receiver hitch to the bench today. Used 2.5" square with a .25" wall. Welded a extra heavy 1/2-13 nut to the square so I could tighten up the fit of the 2x2 sqaure if i need to. Also built my first attachment, a old dryer motor with a buffing wheel.

Post 354 has more pictures of this bench

Finished up my 10 foot bench. 2X2X.90 steel welded construction with a receiver for tools (like the vise I have in it now). OSB underlayment with 2.25X.75 oak flooring top, stained and clear coated. Rear stop and sides are .75X1.5 red oak. Front is finished off with .75X.5 red oak shoe molding. The flooring is what is called "utility grade" meaning it has flaws of some sort and is mixed red and white oak. .89/sq ft at Lumber liquidators. This bench is for light work/clean assembly so it gets a light duty top. I have another 6 foot bench that I am going to do the same thing with. I also have a 5 foot bench (under the 10 footer) that is on casters and is for metal working and nasty stuff. I am redoing it right now and will refinish it and add a receiver for tools.

I wasn't sure I would like the utility flooring but, hell, it's a work bench and it costs about a fourth of what the higher quality wood would cost. As it turns out, I really like the variations and flaws in it. I glued and brad nailed it to the underlayment, sanded, stained, and cleared it 3 times and am really happy with how it turned out. My daughter decided it would be a good place to have lunch when we are doing something in the garage or for a snack when we are playing our guitars out there.

I have about $100 into it.

What I built, just treated 2by4 legs and standard 2by4 frame anchored to the wall
with 3/4 inch plywood top. It's a solid set up but not movable.
