I'd say this one is a wrap. 80"x27" with a 2x6 screws into the wall (not the bench) as a backsplash.

Here's workbench 1 of 2 in my new garage. Not finished yet as I am going to lower it a couple inches, trim the left side for the arbor press, and refinish the top, but it is attached and I can use it. The material is bowling alley plank that i got from a good friend. His dad used this and 5 other sections as flooring in a shed for about 20 years. When the shed came down two years ago i was offered 3 of the 5 panels. Took them in a heartbeat. I brought home 2 that were 96" x 42" x 2-1/4" thick. I gave the third to a friend. I believe he's still waiting to use his.

I'm pretty stoked about this as i've stepped over, stumbled around and walked into these for the past two years, then moved them to the new house in May. Next weekend I plan to frame and set the other bench.

After spending two years in Napa, I hauled bowling alley back to our house in Vancouver Wa. My wife told me I was nuts.
OK she's told me that before.
Used up the last of the 16 ft I picked up in California just this week. Made a sweet shelf for behind the couch.

I've got soooo many great ideas from this thread for when I build my workbenches. Until then, I liberated this (not sure what it started as) from the back corner of my garage. It's been here since we moved in over 15 years ago and been piled high with boxes and other stuff just as long. It measures 8' L x 20" W X 42" H. There are 3 shelves that run the length inside. Left half fits my meager tool collection as well as nails/screws and adhesive type stuff. Right half is full of paint cans from when we painted the house. Had the opportunity to use it as a workbench actually and it did a decent job. Forgot to snap a picture of it passing The Beer Bottle test - which it did. Admittedly, it was a bottle of Diet IBC Root Beer, so maybe lighter than other people's tests - but it still counts!

Reorganized one of my benches. Removed the toolboxes I had on the bench because I couldn't open drawers when working on a project. It seemed like a good idea when k put them there.

Now I have project vise storage in the back, and I can work on a project without getting frustrated when I need to get something out of one of my toolboxes. Also have 2 more feet of usable workbench space.

Part of the other bench where my desk area is and my toolboxes.

I have been working on a century barn for the summer and it's starting to come together. On the weekend, a friend of mine dropped off some stuff that he wants me to store and gave me an old Gap table that was a store fixture. I am in love with this as a workbench/layout table. It is heavy and solid and I think looks really cool.

My bench for the past 19 years has been a disaster. Six feet of bench buried in **** with thirteen more wall feet of **** surrounding it. I took a week of vaction in August to rectify that situation. Here is a before shot and shot midway thru the rebuild.

Here is a bench I am working on. Built with kreg jig HD. I am putting polyurethane on the to and painting the bottom. I need to add the shelf on the right side yet.

Johnny,

Do you have any pics of the cart in the bottom left of the picture? It looks as though it was designed to accompany the red/white big wheel trike in the background? I'd love a shot of both, as I have a very similar trike from when I was far younger. It's currently on my list of resto projects, likely something I will tackle this winter.

Cheers.

I really dig this table. There's something cool about combining the sawhorse looking supports with the solid permanent look of the top and shelves.

I do not have any pics of the cart, but I can take a few for you. I had an extra trike that was junk, so I used the rear axle and wheels, welded on a tongue and bolted a tilting bed on it. The kids love it.

Nice bench Pablo, whats the source of the drawers?

Those are some Husky ones I picked up on clearance for $13/ea. Cheap and effective for the bench. Got two extra and one is going on the bench I'm building my son. The other is going on top of my smaller roller chest.

Started working on this last week. It's about 9 feet by 30" deep. I need to put a few vertical supports in the front but I'm waiting until I get the toolboxes so I know where to put them so I can frame the toolboxes, sort of like they are built in.

I received this craftman workbench quite a number of years ago from my in-laws for Christmas. It was my only work surface for a long time when we were in a rental. Now it acts as an island workbench in my two car garage. I'd been wanting to make it be able to roll around for a couple of years, I just got around to finalizing an idea and getting it done.

Started with this:

attachment.php

Cut a few inches off the bottom with a bimetal blade in one of those vibrating tools.

attachment.php

And spent way too much time cutting 2x4 scraps to fill the gaps.

attachment.php

Added some Lowe's casters.

attachment.php

And viola!

attachment.php

I'm very pleased with how it turned out. It's within 1/2" of the pre-mod height and it's so nice to be able to move it around wherever I need.

Been keeping my eye out on craigslist for another. I'd like to convert the cabinet side to another set of drawers. The one I found so far was asking too much for a bench that cost about $125 new.

I've been adding stuff to it. A nice place to store my clamps.

Screw the workbench, those friggen walls are awesome!

Thanks guys, I can't take much credit for the walls as there was likely a far harder working gentleman about 140 years ago that built them. I have dreamed of turning this into a shop since we bought the place about 5 years ago.

I think that the table really works well in there.

I had a local wood trim shop make me a 16' x 24" x 1 1/2" thick butcher block from seasoned oak. I routed a bull nose on the front then stained, sanded and sealer until I passed out.
It's harder than woodpecker lips but I think I came out good.

The only problem it now has the look and feel of a nice piece of furniture so I don't want to beat and bang on it..................but I will and that will add character. lol

Cheers!

Got this workbench for free off Craigslist in Portland Or. The trendy lady I picked up from had free range chickens, her 4 yr old daughter was playing in the hen house and the Porsche was parked by the curb.

The metal legs are what cinched the deal. I cut it down to use as a kitchen table

View media item 53992
The top is 5/4's pine edge glued. I used 36 grit paper on my belt sander and went about 10 degrees across the grain.

View media item 53993
Following a you tube video, doesn't everyone, I sprayed the edges and top with a light coat of black spray paint. While the paint was still wet I stained the whole thing with dark walnut Danish Oil.

Semi finished project with a couple of coats of polyurethane. I'm stripping the legs and doing the rusty look. But it looks ok with the plastic saw horses.

Wow! 16' x 1-1/2" thick.
That's something you don't see everyday.
Very Nice.
I like the proportions, just looks right somehow.
I think seeing the first dent in it would make me cringe.
But it is a workbench.
A very nice one!
Good job.

One tip, put a board on the back to enclose it and add rigidity to the bench. Not sure why they couldn't have done that from the factory.

So I am in the planning stages of my workbench. The top will either be laminated layers of plywood/mdf/melanine, or butcherblock style. I want to add a steel top from 12ga sheet.
My question is this- in order to help the wood take a bit more heat, how would hardie-board in between the steel and the wood do?

I think it would help to keep from burning the wood, but not sure how resilient it would be to hammering etc....

Greetings,
First, my handle, 18cents, is indicative of the price of gasoline when I purchased my first tank at 16 years old. I will let you determine when that was and my age now if you like.
This is the bench in my garage. The garage was built in 1970. The bench was built by my father in the mid-70's out of reclaimed lumber from the trucking company freight dock where he worked at for 30 years when it was demolished. All 4X4s, 2X8s, and 2X12s. It is just over 13' long, 3' deep and 38" tall. A lot of projects got started on this behemoth, and a few even got finished. Many fond memories working with Dad around this bench. Normally there is a 6" vise on the right end corner. It was removed and the bench cleaned off a couple weeks ago as we hosted our Century Farm celebration in the old garage. The little yellow bench at the right end of the big bench is my first work bench that I got for Christmas when I was 8 years old. How it survived all these years I have no idea.

Only a Garage Dude or Dude'ette would understand the interest in admiring an old workbench with years of this and that in/on/around it....
I found this on CL, I'm going to change the color before I bring it in the shop...just what color...??? I don't know yet./

Leave the top that color blue. Will make a nice contrast to every small part dropped or placed on it.

Hi Guys - I'm finally getting around to building my workbench and welding/fab table. I was lucky enough to score the bench below which came out of a sheetmetal factory. It's level, BIG and well built with a few bits that need cleaning up.

As it is it's too large to be practical so I'm trying to work out how to use it. My first thoughts are to cut off one end and have essentially a square welding/fab table, roughly 1200m x 1200mm (4' x 4').

With the remaining piece I was planning on cutting it right down the guts to give me two benches that are 2700mm x 615mm (roughly 9' x 2'). These would then go against the wall in my shed and give me 5700mm (18') of bench space.

I'm just worried that 2ft may not be deep enough? That measurment is from the face of the front steel to the back, not including any overlap that I would get when I put a top on.

It's mainly a general workbench and will be used to build engines on and I'd like to build in some cupboards and/or drawers into it, under the top.

Love to hear some other ideas.

ScottsRX: I may be in the minority but I find the 615mm (2') deep bench more useful. The deeper the bench, the more stuff piles up at the back (not my doing -- it just migrates there by itself). I end up with a 615mm (2') work space regardless of how deep the bench is. With your plan, just move your square fab table over to the bench as an extension if you need a really deep bench for a particular project. If you shorten the legs on the fab table and mount some wheels, you'd have a real nice bench setup. But that's just me....

ScottsRX: I have to agree with Bob. We have a 7' x 20' frame table and combo anything else we need it for work area at the shop. The majority of the time we are working on the leading 30" x 48" corner for setup, welding and misc everyday use. The rest is always loaded with pending projects or stuff that gets delayed or sidetracked. At home I have a 2' X 4' welding and setup table that is just fine for my hobby and resto work.

In my view a workbench should only be wide enough that you can lean in and reach the back. Unless both sides are used then you can double that.
