I built a second folding work bench for my garage. The longer one is built to match the height of my miter saw so it can be used as an out feed table. Pretty happy with how they turned out.

its a teachers desk, cl seller said its 70 years old. suits me just fine though id like to find the date on it if there is one. its nicer than the desks teachers had when i was in primary school in the 80s.

anyone who can tell me more please do so.

1st post: When I retired, we moved from Olympia, WA to the Salem, OR area to be near kids/grand kids and built a home near the little farm town of Sublimity. I dug trims from the beams of our covered deck out of the mud and used them to build benches for my basement workshop. So, when I wanted a bench for my garage, I made one from a piece cut-off the garage door header. Don

Since my basement workshop technically became a "garage" for my tiller, snow blower, DR wagon and bicycles when I managed to get all 3 cars inside the real garage for Winter, here are pics of my other benches: In the background you can see a similar bench to my garage vise bench. That is just awesome. I love those old desks. Kills me that my mom had one in great shape with the spring loaded typewriter shelf and sold it at a yard sale!

That's terrible! I've seen one of those converted to use as a mixer lift/stand in a kitchen. It wasn't a full size desk though, was roughly 26x20. But there's several applications for that spring load lift if you are crafty.

Here is the bench in my current shop. Made it with leftover material when the barn was built. The top is 3'x8' and 1/2" metal. Painted with DTM. Its held up great over the last 6 years. It has plenty of weight i dont have to worry about it moving. Had to lift the top in place with a forklift. The cabinets on either side of the bench were custom made by the cabinet shop next door. The bench is a mess this was during a heads/cam install on my SRT. TV is a 55"

My bench is made from a section of workstation from the Hoover company, which was located down the street from where I work and was closed several years ago. I bought some items at auction, but this top was taken out of service in the early '50's, from what I understand.



It's mounted on an old set of Lyon legs ( also from the Hoover plant) and incorporates my blueprint cabinet.

I'm also working on this,


It's a Roubo workbench I'm making from an oak slab we cut at work ten years ago. This will be woodworking only.

Just finished this - First workbench I built. Used the Kreg jig kit. Worked out well and pretty stout. It's really more of a utility bench as I am putting my drill press, sander and some other things on it. That's why it's a bit deeper than the work bench I plan on building for the garage but that's another day.

I have one of those monitors that rotates through 360 so depending what country I am looking at I just orient it to suit, easy.

I have two. The one at the back of the garage is made up of a solid oak zero panel door attached to repurposed kitchen base cabinets. It's decked w/masonite and a 2x4 back edge. My side wall workbench is a repurposed one. My neighbor had sitting outside for several years. I asked, he said you can have it. It has masonite deck w/ a 2x4 back edge, closed in back and sides along w/increased underneath shelf space. Here is the before and after.

It looks as though a simple piece of square tube is used to hold the castors out when needing to move.

Not sure if this was the intent but seems simple and useful way to move the bench to where it is needed and remove the square rube

yes but looks like a lift system is there- is it a screw on the posts?
looks like a heavy bench and you would need a way to get it up on the casters.

To set it off the casters, it looks like you lift up the table at the stretcher with a floor jack and remove the square tubing. Looks very simple.

I have started filling up my new garage and workshop with cabinets and worktables. I built a prefabricated bench first, so I had a surface to work on, and then started on a light-duty workstation, for model building and such.
The bench area is 3/4" ply on a 2X4 frame and the drawers are a combination of particle board and pine faces. I love the "slam-proof" drawer slides that I got from Lowes. Next items will probably be wall mounted small cabinets with doors for modeling parts.



You will notice my colour scheme is white with British Racing Green accents!

thanks for the posts. I hate dirty floors and I seem to get a large number of little bugs that want to use my garage as the great burial ground of their species. I also like to wash my floors twice a year and dragging out heavy stuff is a well a drag

I finally mounted my 3 52" Griplatch tool chests on stainless legs made for kitchen equipment. This allowed me to level, and mount across the back wall. With a 2"x4" top, I made one 166" long workbench. Not 100% sure I wouldn't have been better off to make the top out of 3/4" Plywood...( still may )
