The top is from an old 8ft gladiator workbench I had. Boxes are resting on the frame for the bench, wheels removed.

I was going to use a piano hinge but I ended up using barn door style hinges. Both the work bench top and the legs use the barn door hinges. The feel stronger than the piano hinge I was going to use.

Inspired by Boyd's great thread (http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=180118), here is my new bench.

I had two matching Craftsman rolling bases, then added a Harbor Freight 13 drawer box. 2x4s for a base and frame, then a basic countertop from Lowe's to finish it off. Paint is just Rustoleum spray cans, "Painter's Touch 2x" in gloss Sage Green, 2 coats over a white primer base.

The countertop is 2 feet deep, which leaves a nice area between the wall and rear of the boxes to store lumber stock.

VJ, I've been very inspired by Boyd's old shop too. Did you end up buying the same Berlin paint or did you find something else close? Please post what you used.

I have the exact same boxes: Two Craftsman bases and a Harbor Freight box. I'm about to do a reset in my garage and I just don't know if I can paint my otherwise good boxes green - though I love Boyd's and now yours too!

Dan, I just used Rustoleum rattle cans, their "Painter's Touch 2x" in gloss Sage Green. It sure looks close to the Berlin that Boyd used. I sprayed a white primer coat first to make sure the red didn't mess up the green. Thanks!

I have never been much of a rattle can guy but since putting away my automotive painting supplies about 6 years ago, I have resorted to the fact that I have to use them on occasion and I tried the Rustoleum Painter's Touch 2X coverage on a base I made for my new mill a couple of years ago and it turned out well. Great coverage and the match was pretty close to the lid as well. Still holding up well after a lot of swarf and cutting oil being deposited on it and cleaned/wiped up. I had just used some Martin Senour aerosol etching primer I had on the shelf, nothing special.

Still in the process of building my garage - but here's where my work benches will be. Got these from HD for $65. It would probably cost me close to that to build em myself.

And just framed up and installed the rear O/H door I saved from my old garage to have a nice big door to go out the back.

Very much a work in progress. Working on wiring it up and getting lights and elec in there next

Just normal lights than I fab'd up some wrap around deflectors. Under cabinet lights are switched power with a toggle switch mounted in Bench

Ha ha, you meant Rustoleum, right?!:lol:

Ironic that I didn't recognize how close Rustoleum Sage is to Boyd's color.

Why? Look here:


I painted my entire '55 truck in it - except I used satin! I still have a couple leftover cans and it had never occurred to me that it was close! The truck is currently in a million pieces with the cab, doors and front clip in paint jail since last July.

What is the standard height for your workbenches? As I finish my electrical, I've been using my scaffold ladder as a workbench, and have to say that I'm enjoying it's 41" table height. Works well for my 5' 8" body. Great for standing, would need a tall stool for sitting, but that's easy enough.

Anyone out there using a tall bench? How's it working out for you?

I completely redesigned my tool storage last year and used my rollaways under the new bench. Still haven't finished stripping all the drawers, but one day I will. I like having almost all my tools in a cenral location.

Mine is 41", I think it's perfect. I have a "drafting chair" which is basically a tall office chair with a footrest....similar to the stools they have at parts counters but with casters. I'm 6'3". I like the top a few inches below the elbow so I don't have to reach up to work on stuff.

I built a second folding work bench for my garage. The longer one is built to match the height of my miter saw so it can be used as an out feed table. Pretty happy with how they turned out.

Mine is finally done enough to the point where I can post it in this thread! I built it all from scratch. So far, I am very happy with it.
