DaveT that's going to look great with the different wood species in there. That planer sure looks stuffed.

Thanks Smalltown, I’m loving how the two woods look together. Yes that was 12 1/4 inch wide going into the 13” planer. That Dewalt DW735 handled it with ease. I tell what though I was nervous when I ran the first section through. I am a newbie to using a planer. This was my first project. I bought the planer used so all of my initial milling of the boards up until these large sections were done with the original blades. They didn’t have any nicks and I was getting a nice smooth finish on the boards, but it was struggling sometimes on the single 3” individual boards. Well I flipped the blades over to the second side, which had never been used, and wow what a difference. Unbelievable really, not a bit of hesitation pulling these huge slabs through and the finish glimmers. All part of the learning experience, dull blades can produce a good finish but there is much more force required by the feed rollers to pull the wood through. There is now way these large slabs would have made it through with the dull blades.

Here is my workbench and its friend. I plan to make more like the small one because I have more of the rough cut 4x4s to make the butcher block top from.

I just snagged 2 of these craftsman cabinets on sale last week. I previously had a very crappy make-shift bench against this wall so I’m glad to see that gone.

I’m Still moving things around so this might not be the permanent home for my bench. I definitely need a top, and long term I might build a welded structure to house the cabinets and make the bench more rugged used.

I’m thinking of getting a butcher block top. I need one that is 10 feet long. I need to get it shipped as I don’t own a truck. Has anyone used a butcher block top from Lowe’s?

SoCal: I have not used one but based on the amount of work I’ve put into making my own 7’x36”x2.5” thick butcher block I would say that’s a decent price. And free shipping that a pretty good deal. Looks like the reviews are positive.

By the way those cabinets and your shop looks incredible!

Just finished two 5 foot workbenches that are bolted together. Hockey puck leveler feet to compensate for 4 inch drop in 10 feet. 3/4 Baltic birch top with tempered hardboard cover. Very sturdy, and most likely strong enough for my needs. I wanted two layers for thicker top, but just used what I had left over from another project and didn’t have enough. Built from attached EAA plans, slightly modified for a taller bench, overhang to clamp things, and doors, and the leveler feet from the other attached website.

I see a pre-1980 California License plate, my 80 Celica first commute car was 370 ZJK. Might be 1970's?

Interesting angled 2x4 running into the peg board, to tie ceiling joists to the wall for structural strength? I've seen them horizontally on the top plates in the corners, never like that. Cool old shop .

For all you workbench aficionados, how well do you think a laminate countertop for a kitchen would hold up?

General garage workbench type tasks, occasional gun smithing type stuff. Not to much pounding and hammering, and I've got a beefy all wood bench outside the garage for when I really need to beat on something.

Schnutzy, I have two lengths of laminate countertop in my garage (a 6' and an 8'). I use it for everything but pounding (2-by tops on 4-by-4 legs in the workshop are for pounding). The laminate tops are 23 years old and have dulled a little and have a couple of chips but I like that none of the chemicals I use affect it and even hardened epoxy drips come off with a razor blade scraper. I didn't think it would hold up but it has been surprisingly durable.

Here is my humble example of the laminated 2x4 bench. It has 64 2x4's laminated in four pieces (96x12x3"). I used almost a whole gallon of tight bond 3 glue! I used a plate joiner to attach the big sections together. The front edge is 2x3 oak. I finished it off with gun stock color stain and several coats of BLO and tung oil.

I had a hard time deciding on which of my several vises to mount on it. I went with my Craftsman 5197, Wilton 500, Wilton wood vise, and Pow-r-arm. I've been really wanting to use the Pow-r-arm since I got it last year but I didn't have a good spot to mount it. I used these threaded inserts on the bench top to mount it. I wanted to be able to easily remove it and still have clean work surface.

Under the front edge I stuck on a l.e.d. strip for lighting in the drawers. It does several different colors as well as white light.

Mr W: All I can say is WOW! That is an incredible workbench and you have some awesome accoutrements to go with it! That Craftsman vise is on my dream list. The LEDs to provide light in the drawers is brilliant, I will be using that one! Excellent build my friend

Love the idea of the under bench lighting for the tool boxes......be evil to leave them on green. Why must I wait until I get word of more work coming my way before I can buy more **** for my tool boxes!
