Bill,

Maybe I am going against the grain, but I believe the Invertec is a great machine to learn TIG welding steel on. Not having AC is only an issue if you want to weld aluminum, otherwise steel and stainless will be fine. I learned on my V-250S, and didn't have the benefit of a foot pedal. I can agree not having high frequency start adds some difficulty, but learning lift start is really no harder than learning to strike an arc with a stick electrode. Once you get the feel for it, it becomes almost second nature. As far as not having a gas solenoid, its more of an inconvenience than anything else.....you still get the pre and post flow, and while you may waste more gas, it will ultimately be very little as you can simply shut it off at the torch handle.

Here's the real question....do you really need a TIG machine? If not, then there is no reason to spend money on this one (or any other for that matter). On the other hand, if you are serious about learning and do have a need for the skill, I say go for it. Even if down the road you decide you need a TIG with more bells and whistles, you can use the majority of the equipment you buy on the next machine.

Just understand that TIG welding steel is very limited, slow and tedious, and has a much higher learning curve than MIG or stick. That being said, it can be a very rewarding endeavor, but it isn't for everyone.

Jason280,
Let me start by saying that I DO NOT NEED ANY of the welders. This is all just for my own entertainment. I don't expect to ever make any money with them. I just want to be able to stick pieces of metal together. Don't really know what I want to build beyond a welding cart and fab table and rolling bases for machines. Might do some mods on trailers I have.

So as it stands, I'll keep the foot pedal that is on it's way. I'll forego the rest until a little later. I want to keep the money in my pocket as a buffer. I can always pick those things up when I want to. At least I know the machine works, and I can learn stick with it.

I just unhooked it temporarily to rearrange the garage and already feel the loss of not having it ready to use. It will be hooked back up more permanently soon though.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm having fun.

Making lists doesn't do much.

Implementing them does though!!!

And without a plan, there is nothing to do.

I am in the midst of making those changes.

Moved a number of things out of the garage yesterday (Jointer, H Press, Compressor, Misc. toolboxes, Compressor Cooler, Workmate, Lift cart, etc.) and I'm going to do more today. Have 2 large Compressors, Pexto shear, Arbor Press, Parts Washer and a lot of misc. to still remove.

It's a start. I pass on a lot of stuff that is a good deal. Someone offered landscape timbers yesterday, a real deal but I don't have plans for them.
My cousin waited a month or 2, got a HH 140 with bottle and wire, new condition for 150$. That I might have scooped, full bottle, ready to go. That I might have scooped due to the fact people want them. It was down near you. Here it would have brought 400. 3 easy. I am not a good seller though. I havnt bought any "deals" in a while, need it before I am interested.

I bought a torch set for the regulators, ended up with one good but really the bottles. It wasn't a super deal but convenient. At the time I wanted 1 more set.
Getting ready to fill some now, I can go a long time without needing to restock.

I keep an eye on CL for deals.

The other day there were 24 2'x2' concrete patio pavers. Enough to do an 8x12 patio.

Went and looked at them and tried to visualize where and how I would use them.

Couldn't see it and left them for someone else.

Making progress on the garage organization.

Some folks do things cause they need to, others cause they want to.

After a couple of sessions at welding class, I've changed my mind.

The instructor suggested getting a Miller Dynasty 200DX but at the price, I'm just going to concentrate on TIG for steel only, and this welder will do that. I know it's lift start and no HF. And it requires a control on the torch for gas as it has no solenoid, but this will do for a while. So I reordered the TIG pedal that I cancelled (At $20 higher price) and will get a tank of Argon and torch etc. Pedal came today!

Unless someone offers me a Dynasty at a really good price!!!
