Hello,
Has anyone been notified by Liftmaster?
I received an email yesterday out of the blue from Liftmaster. They included a link to obtain the new version 889LM Wall Controlled.....ABSOLUTELY NO CHARGE and FREE SHIPPING(limit one per owner). I clicked on the link and it took me to their website. I filled out the form, entered the promo code they provided and a new replacement controller is on its way with tracking number.
Possibly their way of doing a recall.....without doing a recall?
Either way, it works for me.

It may be a second wave.
I also had all mine replaced, but I still received an email. So I got an backup just in case. The link went to their website(accessory section). I did have to enter a credit card but it wasn’t charged. They sent an order confirmation with a zero balance. I did register all my openers with Liftmaster after I purchased them. I sure that’s how they tracked me down.

Yes, sounds like exactly what we did for the first wave, thanks

Yes, it was correct link. You have to hit the hot link "Request Replacement 888LM" in the previous link. I have a new 889LM wall controller on the way. Thank you @metschers .

Just got my 889LM (manufature date 11/19) put in and it works exactly the same as the two 888LMs that came before it - that is to say, not at all.

I have literally never been able to get one of their control panels to work with my 3800PLD opener - At least not since the original Plain Jane stock panel that was in the house when I bought it fell apart. If I jump the wires at the panel end the opener activates, so it shouldn't be the wire. I've also tried rewiring the panel with an 8" or so length of paired wire from another opener to confirm if it could in case my wire was somehow the issue.

Called the customer service line, they are sending me another 889LM to try. Is it really possible that I am just getting one bad panel after another, or has something else within the opener failed that I should have a look at? I love the opener itself, but this issue makes me want to rip it all out and throw it down a ravine.

Update - Turns out at some point my logic board was damaged and that was the root of my problem. It's weird since I only replace the original wall controller because it was physically falling apart, but it still worked fine. $70 later and a new logic board and I'm good to go. The tech support was really helpful and she gave me 20% off the board for my troubles.

The link to to the recall page doesn’t work. Any other online links that could work?

I had gotten the new controller maybe a couple years ago. Everything worked except the remote light would stay on at times. Finally, I replaced the LED bulbs with some incandescent bulbs and it's worked perfect since.

I have two 8500 garage door openers I installed at the same time in 2015. Both have 888LM controllers with a build date of 3/15. One of them has failed where the yellow and red lights flash quickly or not at all, and the door is randomly opening and closing. This is an incredibly bad failure mode. I contacted LM customer support yesterday and they're sending me 2 new controllers but they're on back order and probably won't have them for 3 weeks. I'm going to swap out the caps on the bad one just so I have a functional opener until the new controller comes in.

I have been waiting for my ‘free’ replacement LM889 for well over two months....the LM folks told me a couple weeks back then also...

I went to my local dealer and purchased one as I was getting tired of not being able to use my remotes....I will keep the free unit as backup.

Wish I'd seen this thread a while ago. Jst replaced the wall controller on my own dime because the door was randomly opening and closing.

I read through the entire thread! I just bought a house with 3 of these and my lights are randomly turning on and off but the door still functions normally so far. From what I gather this is the sign of it starting to fail. I believe my openers are around 3 years old. I understand that you can use a doorbell switch to cycle the doors open and closed if I need to get to that point, but was also wondering if I install a Wifi wall switch, would that work? I like the idea of using automation to control the doors (have other switches etc. in the house for lights) and have them open automatically when I pull into the driveway. Is this possible?

What I am thinking is pull the control panels off the wall and install a 3 gang box in their place with wifi switches. I would love for this to work.

edit, nevermind i forgot that it needs to be a momentary switch. I think the sonoff 4ch is the way to go

I have a new 8500W with the 880LMW controllers. I just had put in 3 months ago on both doors. On Monday morning wife walks into the garage and says door was left open. I know for sure I closed. I check the log and it opened on it's own at 227am! unreal. checked the camera's no cars on the street, dead silent. This is very disheartening.

In no way is this post intended to diminish your disappointment. I’d be very unhappy too. Just offering a possible solution to your unease.

Since you have an 8500W, I’m assuming you’ve got a decent WiFi signal in your garage. If you plug your opener into one of these:
https://www.leviton.com/en/products/dw15p-1bw

you can program it to have no power except for time periods you specify, like your normal coming and going times. And you can turn it on from your smartphone at any other time and have it automatically power off after 10 minutes or so.

You shouldn’t need to have this additional cost/inconvenience after paying the price of 8500W, but the Leviton solution might give you peace of mind. I’m using 2 of the Leviton devices for light control in my shop and they have been incredibly reliable.

When this problem first started happening I put all of my openers on remote controlled receptacles. Mine are controlled by my home automation system. I appreciate added layer of security.

Pretty sure the original failure pattern didn't report to the app.
Hoping this isn't a new & improved problem.

I didn’t read the entire thread but...I need to replace my 888LM wall control panel. It failed today and opened my garage door while I was out on an errand.

I know liftmaster has an updated controller (889LM) they will send for free, assuming it’s ever in stock.

I don’t use WiFi, remote, nothing as this is my shop and only open via the wall controller...so, is there a simple not smart fancy liftmaster wall controller that is more reliable?

Super thanks for any recommendations!

I breezed through this thread, and while I saw many complaints of the controller failing by opening the door unexpectedly, I may have missed what's happening to me.
Is an early warning sign of controller failure, that the light never shuts off after the door is closed?

I experienced this situation and have always uses an incandescent bulb. Cycled power on the light and controller, symptom remains the same - light stays on after door closes. Motion sense feature disabled at initial install.

I've unplugged the light and haven't had any issues with the door opening unexpectedly. Is it just a matter of time?

I have had this happen a few times over the 5 years my controller functioned. Not sure if it’s an early indicator of failure or not. I’m just going to bite the bullet and pay amazon 39.95 for the 889lm vs waiting for who knows how long it to be back in stock direct from liftmaster.

I am in the same boat. More complexity just equals more failure points. I'd like something without all the geewhiz stuff, but doubt if that exists.

I haven't had the random door opening problem with my 10 year old opener yet but I do occasionally have the light stay on problem, so if that's an indication of impending doom I need to know what to replace the control panel with.

As previously mentioned it's hardly practical to wait months for a replacement from the manufacturer when you have a problem so if a simple reliable replacement is available I'll just eat the cost.

For those with 889LM controls, and who still have occasional random door operation, or lights that come on and off for no reason, the problem may be electronic interference. Either from nearby identical controllers, or other cheap chinese electronics nearby. or both. In the photo, two of the wall switches on the right are wi-fi switches, with two adjacent 889LM controllers on the left. The rightmost controller has randomly turned the light in it's associated circa-2005 Liftmaster opener on randomly since I installed the controllers a year ago. This winter, the door associated with the controller on the left opened randomly a couple of times. I certainly couldn't put up with that, so I made a little aluminum foil shield to fit between the controllers, and the door hasn't opened except on command since. A week or so ago it occurred to me that the wi-fi switches might be causing the random light activation/deactivation problem, so I added the baffle on the right, and the light has worked perfectly since. I need to come up with a solution that looks a little less ghetto, but the aluminum foil has worked great, and cost nothing to try.

The easiest thing would be to swap out that plastic decora switch cover with a metal one...

The 889lm controller is/was back in stock this past week direct from liftmaster...of course the day after I receive one from amazon. Oh well, at least I’ll have a backup on the shelf.

This just bit me, out of town, garage door just opens itself. Glad I have a camera in there that alerted me so I could have someone go close the door the next morning.....

Chamberlain obviously has our email address if we have these devices, why not email us letting us know about the issue. I have a support ticket open now, am curious if they will play stupid.

Well the first support response from Chamberlain was a joke. They avoided answering the question and sent me a generic troubleshooting guide even though I mentioned the 888LM and the open door issue.

My second email got them to admit there was an issue with the units and they are mailing me a 889LM.

I'm still going to open a complaint with the CPSC. This is a real safety issue.

I've been a long time follower of this thread and held off on buying a Liftmaster opener because of this issue. In my search for an alternative, I found out that Genie recently came out with a jackshaft opener of their own.

It has WiFi smartphone control (not required), battery backup, lock and it doesn't require a separate cable slack monitor. Instead it uses cable keepers, and the motor soft starts/pulses the first couple seconds when closing to sense if there is slack in the cables. I installed mine about a month ago and have been very happy with it so far. It does operate a little slower than my old conventional unit, but it is more than sufficient. It is also extremely quiet.
