I had a washer and dryer delivered from a big box store last Sunday, and it was actually a third party (in an unmarked truck) that dropped and installed the appliances. When asked, the installers said that all of the appliances go back for scrap. The driver admitted that a known good appliance in good shape *could* be saved by one of the delivery guys if they really wanted.
I don't see anything wrong with them doing whatever they want with the old appliances. I didn't take the time to sell a 15 year old washing machine in questionable shape on craigslist, so if someone else wants it for their home or to make a couple bucks on- who loses? If someone in need of a working appliance for cheap is resold my old stuff, and the delivery guy makes a couple extra dollars I don't mind at all. Its not like they're making thousands of dollars on tired old appliances or swindling people out of cash.
What is scrap value on a washing machine anyhow? A dollar?
