I haven't really looked at the regulator on mine, but what makes it crappy?
Or what makes a good regulator?

mine broke, it's leaking air after less than a year. they are sending me a new one but still it is not a very high quality piece of equipment.

Lowes is sending me my replacement parts. Let's hope they get the ones I need right the first time.

I saw this earlier, but didn't really put it together until now.
Is the $299 Morgan compressor (reconditioned) at Northern the same as the Lowes compressor?

Kobalt 1.6 HP 30-Gallon 155 PSI Electric Air CompressorItem #: 221495 | Model #: LLA1683066

Well I went to my local Northern Tool and they had one of these Morgan RE30 Reconditioned compressors back in the warehouse. They brought it out from the warehouse and my friend and I looked it over. It had obviously been painted black, but otherwise looked brand new. I decided it was more compressor then I needed, but what-the-hell I went ahead and purchased it for $280.

Determined to figure out who actually made this unit, I started my search. First-off other then Ingersoll-Rand, no one actually makes the compressor that is on the label. In this case after searching I found that what I had purchased was a blacked out Kobalt KLA1683066. Theses Kobalt compressors were made for Lowe's exclusively from about 2005 until the end of 2008 by Sanborn or Coleman Powermate, which is wholely owned by MAT Industries. They sold for $500, and then went on closeout for $400 near the end or 2008. The actual compressor pump is made by Laplante Compressor, and uses the LPV5145 Compressor Pump.

I am very happy with my new addition to my garage.

I posted this info here, and got it off of a search on this site from jm1fd , from the relevant thread, "Morgan Series Air Compressor at Northern site".

If this is the exact same compressor, it most certainly works on 15 amps, and not limited to 20.

Might be something to consider for people who missed out.

Now that the craziness seems to be over, I have a question. According to the gauge on the compressor, it looks like mine tops out at about 145psi. Is there a way to adjust that at all?

Also, after I brought home the Kobalt, I listed my Craftsman on CL. It sold for $265, so I made $90 on the new one. And since I bought my original one with some Sears deals, I was even paid a few few dollars to use it for ten years. It is going to be hard to beat this deal!

I sold my oiless Kobalt compressor for 200 bucks, making 40 bucks off of mine. I almost miss it until I hear the quiet operation of my new one....

I thought I would bring this back to the top - seems like there may be a few of these kicking around...

So a couple of months ago I got in on the Lowes Compressor deal ($183 for the 30 gallon, 2hp, 5.5 CFM@90PSI).

They sold me the newer model compressor at the old price:
Lowes Compressor

Yesterday I went into Lowes, and they had the old model 30 gallon compressor out on the floor (they had pulled it off the top of a shelf). I still had the receipt for the one they sold me for $183, so I asked them to price match, and they did...Long story short, I walked out with the Kobalt version of this:
http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...6622_200396622

I'm trying to decide which one to keep, and which one to Craigslist. I may try to sell both and get a bigger 220 unit, but my garage is pretty tight right now.

So, what would you do?

I was under the impression that the older ones were better built than the newer ones, less plastic.

As far as i've read, the model with the pneumatic tires is the better of the two, it's made by Sanborn. The 'newer' one is more plastic, including the wheels.

Well, the 30 gal 1.6 HP v-twin model is currently marked down to $399 (from $459), and I can get a 10% off from that, wonder if I should pull the trigger or not?

I had tried to get one of these back in Sept at a few different Lowe's stores here in the Oklahoma City area, and none would price match the Philly price.

I found out that their purchase price is $379 (on the older model). One of the managers told me no way he would price match to the $183 when his price was $379.

When this deal first started I called every Lowes in the area looking for a replacement for my 33gallon Craftsman oil-less ear bleeder, but had no luck. Since then I've been browsing craigslist for a used compressor but haven't found anything that would work. Yesterday I happened to be at Lowes picking up parts for a project and I asked the manager of the tool department if they would match the old sales price on the 30 gallon Kobalt, I figured it was a long shot by why not. They didn't have any stock, but he pulled out a modified iPhone (apparently Lowes just started issuing these to their employees), did a search, and found one about 80 miles away. In the past I've found stores with the compressor listed in the inventory system, but it always turned out to be an error so I didn't have high hopes. In this case he called the other Lowes, confirmed they could physically find the compressor, and I purchased it over the phone.

To make a long story short, today I drove 1.5 hours each way and picked up a brand new in (dusty) box 30 gallon Kobalt compressor for $160.88 (before tax). This is the old "sqat" version with the inflatable tires. A friend and I opened the box in the Lowes parking lot, drained out the oil, and put it on its side in the back of my 4Runner. I'll let it sit for a day or two to make sure any residual oil drains back out of the cylinders. After missing out on the deal when it originally started I am ecstatic, and honestly a bit unbelieving, that this worked out!

Okay, so is the 1.6HP "short" version (with v-twin cylinder compressor) the new style, or the old style? That is, compared to the 2.0HP taller version?

The few local Lowe's out here only seem to be stocking the 1.6HP version. But $459 is the price. I missed out on their $399 price from the weekend before last. Anyone know who has a good price on them?

The old one will have a glossy black tank. I think its shorter than the new ones.
The new ones tank is flat black or flat dark gray

Thanks bas157.

Well I was at Lowe's today to pick up an outdoor shed to store the lawn equipment (got a 10x12 Arrow shed). I noticed they had the 1.6HP compressors back on sale again for $399. Good enough for me. Used a 10% off coupon so I got it for $380-something OTD.

Anyone's air compressor blowing the breaker? Mine wasn't until recently. I swear it is the pressure switch. Does it when it should shut off or kick on. Not while it is running. Doesn't matter if it is the only thing on the circuit or everything is on.

Mine is too. I wonder what the deal is. It doesn't get a lot of of use yet and is less than a year old. Are you on a 15 or 20 amp circuit?

Haven't had such a problem so far. I have mine plugged in to a dedicated 110v/15A outlet. Mine cycled about 4 times yesterday...not a hitch yet.

Bumping an old thread:

Northern Tool still has the reconditioned Morgan (which apparently, is the same as the no longer available Kobalt unit in this thread).

How have these been long term, now that this thread is 2+ years old?

There's a $50 off $250 coupon online making the Morgan $250.

TIA.

I went ahead and ordered the 30 gallon Morgan. It's $300 but I used a $50 coupon. I added the $35 one year warranty, just t be safe. With tax, it came to $302.

My local store is only ten minutes from here so the free ship-to-store makes it worthwhile.
