That's amazing, Austin! Huge congrats on the baby girl! Man, I can't imagine 4 kids, some days I find myself treading water with just the 2! :ROFLMAO: The first year/ newborn phase can be exhausting, but such a special time. But you must be a pro at it.

The house is looking good, too.

Do you really need two Bambu's?? Maybe you should send one to me 😜
Thank you Nick! Four isn't that much more than three and three wasn't much more than two! Newborns have been pretty easy for us compared to the current chaos of our five and three year old boys.

I'll have to get some good pictures of the house now that I defied death and strung the Christmas lights for the season.

Need? No, probably not. Then again, you don't need one either!

Awesome thread and shop you got here! It is truly amazing what you get done with the space you are working with! I really like the space efficiency.

You make me want to get a 3d printer but I know I don’t have the patience or even a fraction of your attention to detail! Your rendering/drawing is incredible! Keep up the good work!

After seeing the renderings you have created, reminded me of a thread seen on Pelican Parts Forum, where this fellow has modeled a 911 engine. Have been fascinated with his abilities and thought if you have not already seen this, it might be of interest to you as well. If the link does not work, please let me know and will figure out another way to get the link to you.

That's a very nice comment, thank you! I do my best. The shop doesn't see much use anymore, but it's very nice when I need to tackle a small project around the property or do some maintenance on my truck.

Congratulations on the new addition to your growing family! What a wonderful commitment you have made to them!

Thanks for your willingness to share this adventure with us too.

All the best to you and family!
Very kind of you to say, thank you! I very much enjoy sharing my work here.

Austin, congrats to you and your bride! What a beautiful family!

A pair of X1C ?!?! That’s an endorsement.
Thank you Mark! I'm a fortunate man.

Absolutely I endorse Bambu Lab machines! I'm now at the point where I cannot recommend Prusa.

Thank you so much for sharing! Looks like he's using Solidworks for modeling and Keyshot for rendering there. I scrolled through the entire thread, very impressive! That's a true labor of love, replicating the details of cast parts in CAD is no joke, he's using some advanced modeling techniques. I found his Instagram account as well and I've been checking that out today. Very skilled and he seemingly has the accolades to match!

Hope you don't mind another post/rendering of that red '34 Ford I've been posting about for the last eternity. After viewing the forum thread that @ODIS shared and then subsequently the Instagram page of the poster (@glen.cordle), I was inspired to do a quick Blender render.

Here it is, the raw render. It's a single light source for super drama.
Khrome Shoppe Special 022.jpg

I brought it into Darktable to give it a little more "pop", so here's the final product:
Khrome Shoppe Special 022edit.jpg

Let me know what you think of that edit. Thanks again to @ODIS for sharing that thread! By the way, I found out that Glen uses Creo for his modeling, not Solidworks.

A little late, but congratulations on the birth of your daughter Austin. Glad to hear both baby and mother are doing well. I'm sure it was a great Thanksgiving with special meaning this year.
Thank you very much Mike! I assume you've got another wagon wrapped up and ready to send to my new daughter???

Belated Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all!

Not a ton to report, I have finished a couple of larger projects recently and I'm planning my next release of desk mats for the 31st of this month. We had a good Christmas, and the night of Christmas day we finally got some snow. Tuesday was a blizzard, leaving 12"+ drifts. I was excited to fire up the 1816 and see how it would perform in the snow. To my delight, it was fantastic! Not once did the old 16 hp Kohler engine bog down, even pushing 12" of snow through 20' long drifts. It will take some more practice to get down the most efficient procedure (and to reduce the amount of gravel I'm scooping), but I am really happy with how it went.

I dug out the fancy camera to get some commemorative photos:

That looks like a blast!
Always a good time when I get to run the skid loader. The boys love it too, especially my younger boy - he started falling asleep towards the end while riding with me.

Always fun to push with a skid steer! Time for some Edge Tamers...only downside is you can't back drag with them on.

Oh interesting, those would be helpful, but I really need to be able to pull snow back with the cutting edge in a few spots and as you said, I wouldn't be able to with those. I just need to improve! In a past life I spent many thousand hours running skid loaders, but back then I didn't have a kid sitting on my lap ha!

@MadeByMiller

Love my mat! It lives on my desk. It's wide enough where I was able to get rid of my mouse pad to reduce clutter too!
Thank you Jordan! I still admire the color choices you made, the greens pair so well. If it's not too much trouble, I'd really appreciate it if you could pop over to my website some time and upload a photo or two along with a review of your mat!

Guys I've been slacking big time on updating my thread here. I do have some exciting stuff going on with my office space that is definitely worth sharing, I just haven't taken the time to get some decent photos.

I did get the second release of desk mats finished up at the end of January, here are the results of that:
IMG_8652edit.jpg

Forum member @slodat got in on the last release (thank you very much!)
IMG_8649edit.jpg
IMG_8647edit.jpg
IMG_8645edit.jpg

I made one for my mother-in-law as well:
IMG_8643edit.jpg

And this one for my friend Joel with Overkill Racing and Chassis is a culmination of all I've learned so far making desk mats. There are some neat tricks combining a single layer of white with black behind it and infill patterns to make two different shades of gray while not having to add additional colors to the mat (they're limited to four as that's all I can fit in the AMS).
IMG_8639edit.jpg

I have such a good time making these desk mats. It's a joy to work on all of the varying designs people submit, and I really like the challenge of bringing them to life and trying new things. Just this afternoon I opened the books back up for release three of the desk mats. If you're interested, take a look at my website www.madebymillerllc.com - actually, even if you aren't interested in a desk mat, just go check out my website please! I've spent a ton of time on it to try to make it nice.

Thanks guys, I'll be back soon to update what I've got going on with my office!

Yesterday I scored a deal on a topper for the Dakota. I've actually been looking for one ever since I bought the truck, but one has never come up for sale anywhere near me. This one technically was listed with a beater $1,000 '93 Dakota, but I reached out and asked the owner if he would sell the topper separately. He agreed to, and I braved some less than stellar road conditions and took the scenic drive down to Hill City the next morning to pick up my treasure. We made a deal for $100, with him throwing in the plastic drop-in bedliner as well. I thought this was very fair, even considering the condition of the back hatch (he dropped the topper once). I also managed to buy the cigarette lighter out of his truck too (he accepted my $10 offer gleefully), as mine was always missing and that bothered me. I've hopefully arranged with a retired body man acquaintance to body work and paint the topper white to match the truck this spring, and he also agreed to replace my sagging headliner.

I ordered some topper clamps and a foam seal to replace the temporary c clamps and shop rags that are currently holding it to the bedrails. I'm excited! I think it looks pretty awesome and it will be very convenient for hauling things and keeping them out of the elements and safe from blowing out.

By the way, if you're familiar with Hill City then you know that it's the home of the famous 1880 train which runs to Keystone and back. The previous owner of this topper was right on the route of the train, I had to cross the tracks to get to his property. A very scenic area! You can see the tracks behind my truck in the second and third photos.

I have made the trip on that train more than once. My bonus dad's father was the head of security at the Homestake gold mine up in Lead...such a beautiful area!
Very good! I've ridden the train twice, once as a kid and once so far with my own kids. I'm fascinated with the past of Homestake and the current Sanford lab. I would love to see some of what he's seen down there.

Okay, finally I'm going to post about the office changes I mentioned ten days ago.

My office is located in the approximately 300 sqft loft area of our A frame home. It's been great to have my office inside the house, but slightly separated from the chaos of our four small children. When I moved my office up in December of 2021, I brought up my big tanker desk, our old couch, and my 3D printers. It's evolved some over the years, but mostly stayed in the same layout. I don't think I have any pictures of the entire office, but here was my desk area:
IMG_20240127_205102807.jpg
The wall/ceiling opposite my desk had our old couch against it, with totes behind it. My 3D printers were on the wall to your left if you were sitting at my desk, on a bench I built using an old desk top and my smallest Vidmar cabinet:
IMG_20230303_212428973.jpg

When we came home with our newborn daughter at the end of November, I started feeling overwhelmed with the lack of storage and space we had in our home. Moving is out of the question, so I knew that the only option was to be better organized and optimize the space we had. My office was very lacking in terms of space optimization. Here we store some totes with Christmas decor, large baby items, extra kids toys that we swap out, and all of my office/3D printing paraphernalia. The closet in my office is actually our pantry, which is half organized. My plan was to add much more benchtop space so that I could more easily work on projects, package orders, have space for my wife, and eventually also serve as a place for our children to do some schoolwork. I made a model of my office in Fusion 360, and set out researching furniture options.

I wanted the benchtop space to span almost the entire length of the walls, and they needed to be nice and deep to make up for the sloping walls/ceiling of my office. The best bang for the buck I found was Global Industrial workbenches. After hours and hours of deliberating, I settled on a 2.5'x6' workbench for my new desk, and two 3'x8' workbenches forming a U shaped workstation. I also managed to fit a 2'x4'x6' cabinet from Seville Classics in as well which will end up housing all kinds of things.

The new furniture meant that basically all of the old furniture needed to go, so I made the tough decision to sell my beloved General Fireproofing Mode Maker tanker desk. I listed it in the evening and it was claimed a few hours later, and picked up the next morning. We also quickly sold the old couch as well. The first item to arrive was my new desk. These Global Industrial workbenches are extremely robust - the tops are 2" thick solid! Next arrived some new file cabinets that I ordered through Sam's Club, they're cheap but do the job and most importantly, they were the dimensions I needed to fit underneath the workbenches. So here was the new layout of the office for the last 20 days:
20240219_110113.jpg
20240219_110131.jpg

Until today, when the remaining two workbenches arrived! What a workout to get the massive 3'x8' 2" thick close to 200lb bench tops up into my office, but my amazing wife and I got it done without breaking anything or anyone getting hurt. I have more organizing to do, the big cabinet I mentioned earlier needs to get put in place once the old Vidmar printer bench is removed, and I eventually want to put the 3D printers in half of the closet area that I mentioned currently serves as our pantry, but here's how it looks as of tonight:
20240219_183900.jpg

And here is a quick rendering from the Fusion model I mentioned earlier:
Officemodel.png

So now that this project is finally up to date, I'll keep adding to it as I make more progress. Thanks for looking!

I like that fiberglass chair. Does it have burlap embedded in the resin? I’ve got a few different burlap fiberglass chairs in my stash but not one of those.
Precisely! It's a very cool chair. Funny you bring it up, I was just tonight lamenting the fact that I'll probably have to part with it soon, as it won't really fit in my office anymore with the new setup.

As cool as the old desk was, that's a huge functional improvement, and it looks nice, too. I've been thinking about a U-shape desk as well, for the same reasons (2nd workstation, future homework surface).

Is there another spot in the house for the fiberglass chair? It's not that big, — maybe you could put it in a bedroom corner or something. Either way it's got a neat look.

Wow, that looks great Austin!

Love your ability to do so much with the space you have!
Thank you! It seems that all of the spaces in my world are a bit smaller than would be ideal, but I enjoy the challenge!

Love the new layout and looks like a good usage of a challenging space. Those angled walls look like great places for some posters(or kids art lol).
Thanks man, I'm loving it! Yes, I have some kids art hung but it's currently blocked by the printers.

It is a massive improvement, I'm so happy with everything - and it's not even finished yet!

Not likely to find space anywhere else in my house for that chair. It's maxed out haha
