It's between this one and the Milwaukee 2655B when I get a compact 1/2" drive impact wrench.... I'm invested in both battery platforms, so I could go either way....

I doubt you would be disappointed with either but the Makita batteries seem to charge quicker.

3" Belt sander -- the best feature, IMO is the extra long cord.

Re: ***** Makita Addiction Thread *****

Just went from Dewalt 18v to Makita, impact driver, 1/2 impact wrench, 1/2 drill, 1/2 hammer drill, circle saw, reciprocating saw, right angle impact driver, multi tool, vacuum, blower, 4 1/2 angle grinder, Makita has buy 2 tool only tools and get a free 4 amp hour battery. I have 4 batteries from that deal. Ends 7/31/2015 at participating dealers. I may get another one with a radio, and another impact driver. I will get a pic just don't have one now.

Added the radio and another impact driver on Friday.

Too busy out earning a living with them......

Yeah, I think the sales numbers always show Makita outsells the other brands, yet they're often the silent majority since we never hear about 'em. Stuff just works I guess, no need to your rationalize purchases constantly on internet forums. ;)

I only have one piece of Makita kit, a BO3710 1/3 sheet sander, I really like this thing. Does more work than a 1/4 sheet, while not being nearly as heavy as most 1/2 sheets are.

I may swap out my Festool tracksaw for the SP6000J1 soon as well.

Care to share your reasoning on the track saw? I was researching the SP6000J1 but always hear how Festool is the best (I guess it is Snap On for woodworkers?)

Re: ***** Makita Addiction Thread *****

I'd say the Festool was the best at some point, when they were the first to the market with the track saw.

The rest of the market admittedly copied the idea, but improved upon it as well and Festool did not. Very simple fixes to common problems (like tipover in 45 deg bevel cuts, or chipout on laminates) were solved by other manufacturers, yet Festool did nothing.

If you want the Snap-On of tracksaws, look up the Mafell MT55cc. Their rail system is much superior to Festool or Makita, just make sure you're sitting down when you see the price.

I have had two Festool sanders (RO 150 and RO 90) and their CT26 dust extractor as well, and I plan to only have no Festool by the end of the year. They all work, there's just better now.

I'd say their only real standout tool left is their Domino joiner, which I am still considering, though Mafell's DD40 system is really good as well.

Sorry for the tangent.

I'm just getting into some woodworking so I was wondering what I would be missing out on by getting the Makita vs others. Sounds like nothing.

Thanks for the info.

Re: ***** Makita Addiction Thread *****

The Makita lacks a riving knife, I believe there's some other form of kickback protection though. They omitted it so you can do actual plunge cuts, where a riving knife would normally contact your cutting surface.

It can also only cut 18mm from a wall (I believe the Festool is closer at 12mm).

It has about 20% more power than the Festool though, along w/ the scoring mode to eliminate chipout, and anti-tip mechanism I mentioned earlier.

For your COO fanatics, Makita is made in the UK, Festool is made in Germany.

That's really the major differences between the saws.

My brother has the Makita and a cousin has the Festool track saw, there isn't much between them and considering the price difference the Makita is a great buy.

Re: ***** Makita Addiction Thread *****

Wow, I've waited 20 years for this thread.

My first Makita tool was this 6213 12V Drill/driver. Bought it on the advice of my boss at the time, and paid for it incrementally out of my paycheck. $180 was a lot of money in 1995! Worth every penny. I still use it occasionally, although the factory batteries are no good (I have replacements).

script>

Next up, the JR3070 reciprocating saw. As noted above, this thing is a beast. Very much in league with the Super Sawzall.

script>

Here's a pair of JS8000 fiber cement shears. They work like a charm and will save my lungs in the future. I've sided a couple dozen homes with these and the blades barely show signs of wear after thousands of cuts.

script>

Here's an older jig saw that I picked up at Sears when they were clearing out Makita stock to sell more Craftsman garbage (~2007). Think I picked it up for $20. Not extremely powerful but well built and gets the job done.

script>

A couple of loose tools: 4 1/2 corded angle grinder (came free with a 1" SDS hammer drill) and a corded drywall gun. My tools get USED.

script>

This 1/2" corded impact was a pawn shop score ($40) and looked barely used. It drives lag bolts into treated lumber all day long. Hits hard and is way less cumbersome than the others I've used. Also of note: if it comes in a metal case and is made in Japan, you KNOW you've got a high quality Makita tool.

script>

Here's a little palm sander. Nothing special, but it does what I ask and will actually collect dust when set up correctly. Fits my hands nicely.

script>

This is a 5377MG hypoid saw. As you can see, I beat the **** out of this tool cutting pretty much everything that can be cut with a 7 1/4" blade, from treated lumber to cement board, scoring rock, vinyl siding, you name it. My only wish is that it had a diamond arbor. I need to buy another one soon---not to replace this one, I just want another one :)

script>

And finally, the big kit:

script>

My only complaint? The flashlight totally *****. Works about 20% of the time, and never when I actually need it. I'd like to snag one of the new LXT LED ones, assuming it has more reliable components.

As you can see, I'm a Makita addict for sure. I've got several other Makita tools, but they're out on jobsites. I use them every day, and I haven't had a real failure yet.

Makita does the job and doesn't give me trouble. They may not have the flash and glamour of Milwaukee or Festool, but I'm fine with less gimmicks and more reliability. I've never regretted a dollar I've invested in Makita tools.

Re: ***** Makita Addiction Thread *****

Bought this 1/2" impact in the 1980's. I replaced the cord once when the insulation cover started to crack. Otherwise, it still works like new. More powerful (I believe) than any cordless. Made in Japan. All metal gearcase.

I've also still got my 9.6V drill/flashlight combo set for which I've bought replacement batteries a couple of times, a 9.6V cordless jigsaw which I think is worthless for almost anything (battery life is ridiculously short), a Makita polisher (corded) and a corded drywall screwdriver that I used mercilessly and got no complaint from the tool.

Re: ***** Makita Addiction Thread *****

I use the 10.8v impact driver and vacuum every day at work, super handy tools. I only have a dril, radio and impact driver in 18v so far. My first drill came with the 1.3ah batteries and they were awful but my new drill came with 3ah batteries and they have been a huge improvement. I really need some 5's but can't afford any. The apprenticeship tool allowance got canned so that has made it hard to get more tools. I really want the multi-tool, grinder and hammer drill.

Re: ***** Makita Addiction Thread *****

Okay this thread made me count my Makita collection and I think I got a bit of aDDICtion:

one of my favorite 10" slider miter saw, highly rated
IMG_20150802_112605.jpg
some of my 7-piece lxt : grinder,impact,hammer,light
IMG_20150802_121729.jpg
rest of the lxt recip, circ saw then corded circular saw, hammer, grinder
IMG_20150802_122331.jpg
top notch avt corded recip in metal case
IMG_20150802_122638.jpg
metal case
IMG_20150802_122802.jpg
roller bag has been used for travel too!
IMG_20150802_124129.jpg
radio is sweet, small but no aux port for electronic devices:(
IMG_20150802_122937.jpg

**Update** the only power tool showing signs of "wearing out" are the heavily used impact driver(s). A new set of brushes should take care of that problem..

Makita $45 deal found in Jan 2015:

IMG_20150802_121923.jpg

Makita DEAL found today:

Locked box marked down from $379 to $100 because some tools were missing:( Opened the box to reveal TWO NEW 4.0 Ah LXT batteries and NEW charger. HD MOD knocked another 20% off to entice me to buy for $79. I think its a deal for 2 new 4.0 batteries, charger, case, torque handle

How do you like their nailers? For some reason all of Makita's pneumatic stuff is outrageously priced in the U.S.---generally twice the price of competitors. For that reason I generally stick to Hitachi and Bostitch.

Related note: I'll be curious to see if anyone has Makita's newer high pressure (300-400 psi) compressors or nailers.

So far I haven't used that nailer much at all but I do like it, wouldnt buy there gas gun tho have heard nothing but trouble from people who have them. AFAIK the Makita high pressure system is not sold/marketed here in Australia but I am able to get the HP guns shipped from the UK, have been looking into the HP coil nailer for sidint/sheathing etc as we already have at work a Max HP compressor and concrete nailer and that thing is awesome. HP systems are not very common here at all.

I have a lot of corded Makitas: table saw, band saw, angle grinder, belt sander, oscilating sander, hammer drill, router.
These are at my shop.
Next weekend I`ll take more pictures.

Re: ***** Makita Addiction Thread *****

^^^I like it. Every homeowner should definitely have a cordless 1" SDS+ rotary hammer! You know, for hanging pictures.

Brought a few more home from a jobsite today:

Here's the little mini router. With a slot cutter attached, I grooved 100s of pieces of 5/4 cedar for a deck. The grooves were for the TigerClaw hidden installation clips. Came out nice. I was very hard on the router and it held up no problem---the Bosch slot cutter, not so much.

script>

This circular saw is a 5007F, I think. I've used it a few times when the big hypoid had a weird blade and I didn't feel like changing it out. Eventually I'll mount this in a track on a siding cutting jig.

script>

And finally, the 1" rotary hammer. So far, this has proved to be a pretty exceptional 1". It has limitations, but it's hard to beat for the price. Bought it after I watched a guy burn up a cheap Ryobi drilling 1/2" holes in a patio. The Makita scoffs at such tasks.

Here is my drill, 1/4 impact, and 3/8 impact.

20150804_115707_zpsqd2ymgda.jpg

All take the same battery so there is always one in the charger ready to go.

The only problem with this set is some times I will have more than one out, sometimes all three, and I will often grab the wrong one. No biggie.

Love the old school Makita tools. The batteries - not so much. So, I've been snagging used tools and modifying them to other forms of power. (I hope this isn't an insult to Makita ownwers).

Here's a 9.6v drill I converted last year to run off of an old car battery charger. And a 9.6v pivot head flashlight I just modified to use three 9v radio batteries.

Not much to add even though Makita is one of my favorite brand of power tools. I'm down to only one tool from them since I replaced my 14.4V cordless Makita drill with another brands 18V.

It's an auto feeding driver and is the whoop when hanging dry wall. I was able to hang 20' x 54" upper sheets by myself in my basement with this tool.
