They're an odd duck company, Jim. Old, but small, and sold almost exclusively through special order in and around Detroit and the Great Lakes area and also the railroad industry. They were an early Ford supplier (who wasn't?), which gained them entree with the first generation Jeep toolkit collectors despite a lack of hard evidence. That was my introduction to the name some 12 or so years ago now. If you google them, 9 out of 10 returns will be some law review. They were in several major labor relations disputes over the course of several decades.
I have a 723 with a "1046" (AISI carbon steel number) forged-in vertical on the shank, reminiscent of Herbrand's wartime practice. I have never seen any other mfgr do it.
