Its not everyday you see a set of these for sale. I'm guessing their from the 50's or 60's.

Nice. I see a ton of them around here and they are usually in the cheap bins because nobody knows or cares about them but maybe us tool gurus.

They blend right in with the Craftsman RP's, the drop forged ****, and all the Barcalo. Sometimes I see pouch sets. One lady had a loose 5 piece set of open ends and wanted $3 apiece.

I have a McKaig-Hatch 32 oz ball peen hammer I picked up at auction with a bunch of other stuff. Don't have a picture handy, but it has MH in a circle on the bottom of the flat face and a "78" on top. Doubtful it's the year it was made. Tried to find out when they went under, but havent found out anything in that regard.

Until last week, I'd never seen this tool brand. I found a single wrench at ReStore for a buck. I'm guessing this was a regional brand that wasn't sold out West?

You might see them branded with MH in a circle. I have a pair of MH slip joint pliers which was a mystery to me until I found the Alloy Artifacts page. AA says they were a supplier to Chevrolet tool kits before WW2.

I'm trying to remember if in fifty years I've ever seen those; if I have, it didn't stick in my memory banks.

There have been so many regional/chain brands stamped on wrenches and sockets from the same forging die, it's difficult to keep all of them in mind.

Figured I should post a few pics of that ball pein I mentioned the other day.

First, the makers mark.

ff2fd5ffbd93afaea8477a73f16094a5.jpg

Second, the weight.

Third, I'm not sure what "78" refers to.

"78" might refer to the length of the head in mm? Does it measure just over 3"?
No dice, measures 128mm or just over 5 inches. Great question though. Would have been peculiar in my eyes to have the weight listed in ounces but the length in millimeters, but stranger things have happened.

As I mentioned before, I picked up my first M-H wrench at ReStore. It's an older DOE.

I picked up these 8" combination slip-joints at the flea this morning. I am very familiar with the Circle-MH logo on the shoulder of the handles. I have at least a dozen 6" pliers with cadmium and black oxide finishes and plain grips from a surplus lot. They are crudely finished with mold remains. These are much higher quality and they have a logo under the pivot that I have never seen before. It also features the M and H initials of the company name, but they are merged, like a monograph, and fancified. And they have a pattern on the grip, too.

I had never heard of McKaig-Hatch until I bought a "Pocket Tackle Box" last weekend with some odd's and ends in it. I bought it for the box.

In the box was half of a DOE wrench with the 5/8" end.

Seems like a nice wrench . . .

Cheers

Jim

They're an odd duck company, Jim. Old, but small, and sold almost exclusively through special order in and around Detroit and the Great Lakes area and also the railroad industry. They were an early Ford supplier (who wasn't?), which gained them entree with the first generation Jeep toolkit collectors despite a lack of hard evidence. That was my introduction to the name some 12 or so years ago now. If you google them, 9 out of 10 returns will be some law review. They were in several major labor relations disputes over the course of several decades.

I have a 723 with a "1046" (AISI carbon steel number) forged-in vertical on the shank, reminiscent of Herbrand's wartime practice. I have never seen any other mfgr do it.

I gathered my McKaig Hatch tools for a family photo.

OP's pic isn't showing up, but my guess is it may have looked something like this - scored this 5pc dbl box set at a tractor show in Ottawa KS last year. Couldn't resist for $10.

I picked up these chain pliers this morning at the flea. Same exact forged-in markings on both sides. Patent granted 1929. Patent composite (see Pic 4) courtesy DATAMP.

Was looking up this 301 brake spoon and found this thread. Now I'll have to go look at other tools as I'm sure I saw that MH logo on a bunch others.

My neighbor found a pair of McKaig-Hatch pliers with quite a bit of white paint on them. Here they are after some difficult paint removal and an evaporust bath.

Just snagged this at the flea this morning. I was not aware McKaig-Hatch made SOE wrenches, let alone SOE wrenches with hex throats. The raised (forged-in) model number and logo are nice and crisp.

I'm posting this little 7/16" 1552 combination wrench next to a 3/8" Wilde example, because they are so similar. The open end shape is a bit different though.

IMG_0511 (2).JPG

I cannot make out what the other forged markings are. Maybe a little more cleaning would help.
