It sounds like you are going to have a metal roof. I personally love metal roofing. I have had it on my garage and house for years. Only drawback that I see, is if you have a deck or driveway next to the building, when it snows you get to shovel it twice unless you wait for the snow to slide off before you clean up. But how much snow do you get in VA. Not much I'd wager. Go for it. It's a one time job. It lasts a lifetime.

That will work. Grace Tri-Flex is used more these days than felt. In any event you do need moisture protection as condensation will form under the metal.

I went with 5/8 Advantech sheathing, high temperature CertainTeed water & ice shield, Grace Tri-Flex then metal. Don't want to ever have to mess with the roof again in my lifetime.

Not sure the reason for the OSB, but I would have the panels sitting/attached to the purlins. I would go: OSB, felt, purlin and then the roof panels.

Just put a metal roof on my barn. 4' OC trusses. 2x4 purlins 2' OC. Titanium underlayment. Used it instead of roofing felt for 2 reasons, 1st is to reflect light better than the black, 2nd was condensation. Search "Redhead Racing Shop Rebuild" in garage gallery for pics.

I've built several barns and buildings on the farm with trusses at 4ft spacing, 2x4 purlins, and metal roofing. No OSB needed. As for the snow, use "snowbirds" at the lower edge of the roofing to prevent the snow from sliding off the metal and tearing off the gutters.

Mine is trusses 2' oc, purlins 2' oc, reflex (it is a bubble type moisture barrier with a white side and a metallic side) then steel. The lumber yard sent the reflex out I had never used it or heard of it but now I see it in most of the metal buildings around here.

I have a small leak in my metal roof. I'm really hoping that I can repair it. Any suggestions? I can probably snap a picture of it today.

Don, did you use the Zip System sheathing by Advantech, or just 5/8" Advantech OSB? Reason I ask is that my roofing contractor is telling me NOT to use the I&W shield and the Tri-Flex under my metal roof (products which I have already purchased, BTW) because I have Zip System sheathing. I told him the only reason I used the Zip System stuff was because it was cheap. Not because I wanted a crappy roof.

I have the OSB under the metal roofing, I think it makes it a lot stronger and resistant to hail damage, Much quieter too. The roof has been up since 2000 and seen a lot of bad weather here in Missouri.
