No wonder it shrunk Dan, that pump mix was certainly a high slump mix. Was there a legit reason for it being that wet. Lazy crew, hot loads, etc?. Hopefully you don't end up with a bunch of shrinkage crazing. When are you going to saw cut the control joints or you going a different route?.

Oh and BTW, congrats on getting her done. That's exciting stuff with all the crazy **** you've gone thru!.

LX,
The high slump for the pump truck was achieved with water reducers or super plasticizers. There was additional retarders added to slow the curing for the high temps as well.

Control joints were saw cut that day about every 12'. This time I made sure they didn't cut near where the two post lift will be anchored.

Setting trusses today, 35 centers and 2 drop end gables.
Even that can't go properly for me. Framers called in the crane(my expense) but were not ready. They were cutting spacers as they went, 2hrs in the lift died since they didn't charge it all week and their generator won't run a saw and the lifts charger so I'm paying the crane to sit while the lift charges.:willy_nil

Then half way through they realize they mis-calculated on the amount of 2x4s to brace so I took the day off from work to run and get lumber to make sure they get finished.

Oh, did I mention I needed 35 center trusses?
Truss company only sent 34!

At least it is starting to look like a building.

Well that ^^^^ explains why it looked so wet. A couple years back on a multi level CIP project we were doing 500yd pours in the middle of summer in the desert. You know the kind where it's still 100 flipping degrees out at midnight. So we starting pouring at 1:00am. Even with all the correct add mixtures we still had some real issue with shrinkage cracking. After a great deal of expert investigation we elected to add more bar to help reduce it. That worked to some extent but as they say, concrete cracks. :(

And dang you just can't catch a break can you. Did the flipping framers even cut you some slack on the bill for the day. I would have lost my ****** mind. Hopefully you can raise that last truss with a block and tackle set up unless the company is going to cover the crane minimum.

As always, gooood luck.

Missing truss was delivered that day in less than 3hrs.
Was set by hand using the scissor man lift the next morning.

Guy wants the standing seam roofing job but that is not happening, siding as well.

This guy under bid a job his current crew can't handle in a timely manner.
It was $3/sq ft or $8640 for labor if I bought the nails. There will be some equipment time factored in on the last payment, should be an interesting discussion.

Double D....I want to apologize for not getting the other pics up. I had them on my phone, but didn't know how to get them off. ******* me forgot I could plug the phone into the computer and download them. But I transferred them to Ratdoggy (and I'm going to rat him out) LOL!!!! He said that he would post them to GJ. I guess that didn't happen either, so my apologies. All my fault and I take full responsibility.

It's looking good what you have done so far. Any estimated time on when you are going to be able to move in? When it gets to be time to move, how are you going to do it? Moving van in one shot, or you planning on moving everything yourself? If you're planning on moving yourself, let me know, and maybe Ashton and I can help you out. We can always grab a room for the night somewhere.

Anyways....looking great so far!!!

Dan,

Hell of a time you're having with that build. Wish my company did residential properties as we have a big presence in TN.

Good luck with the build, keep those trades nailed down.

Bill for the crane showed up.
36 trusses, 8 hrs for $1480.
Took way too long for the equipment on hand but that's JMO.

Good sir, it has now been OVER A year since your last update in here. How are things lookin'?

Why yes it has!

The joy of living out in these parts is no land based cable or internet and cell phones might work 1/2 the time. There also appears no interest for anyone to extend service in our area even with all the building going on. I've been watching auctions to try and get a 30' or so tapered aluminum pole to mount a antenna and install a cell repeater in the house, but I digress.

Has been going slower than we'd like and much can be blamed on contractors. For the siding I contacted about 5 companies, some never called back, some set appointments and never showed so I started siding it myself. It may have been a good thing since the framer did a horrible job on the sheathing and I installed 100s if not 1000s more ring shanks where it was not properly nailed and they terminated many sheets off the studs etc, etc.

Spray foam was another fun time, two local companies would not give a written estimate so had to go into Nashville and only 1 of 3 materialized and did give a written bid proposal and got the job.

We have 33' 5th wheel in the shop and living in that and now have a functioning bathroom w/shower in the shop too. This is possible since the kids are grown and on there own.

Let's see how these pics come through.

The one on the left is what is left of the last big side to be sided, my 12' of bakers scaffolding only goes, well 12' and the walls are 17.5' so I'm going to try and rent a man lift to finish it, the fascia, soffit and gable ends this weekend.

Middle pic wife took while I was finishing installing NEW 4'0'x5'0' egress windows, decided to upgrade. Again 12' scaffold too short so needed to stand on a ladder, on my scaffolding.

Right picture shows some of the closed cell spray foam and how it's applied directly to the roof deck. It was in the high 90s for days and a single window unit kept the 1920 SQFT house portion cool and dry.

Couple older pics.
One of the staircase I built. It turned out pretty good, inspector was impressed.:)

Then the flashing, things like this eat up some time as well. Put metal flashing all around the edge of the wall separating the house from shop, under the drywall, in attempt to deter rodents from entering the home if they get in the shop.

Wuz up Dan. I've seen some posts out of ya lately and almost bumped this thread a time or two just to see what was up. But I kinda figured maybe you might be posting from a jail cell after murdering a contractor or two..... :p

Glad to see it's coming together. So are you two living there now or still working on the details and btw, it's looking pretty damn cool.

Fujitsu DIY mini-splits going good 2 yrs now.
Have the Bendpak lift in....not the quality of my old Worth lifts though.

Rented a Case 650L dozer to carve out the hillside for some more flat land. :lol_hitti

Looking over the pics brings back memories....which requires alcohol, lol.

When dragging the scaffolding and 16' walking plank around while siding it I partially tore a bicep tendon off the forearm bone. That hurt for a while and still does on occasion as I haven't had surgery yet. Then last year my wife had 5 back surgeries and I had shoulder surgery for a SLAP tear due to a slip/fall at work.

Zombie thread back from the dead!

They (framers)left before ever finishing what they committed too and screwed up a lot of what they did. Window openings so out of square window wouldn't even go in. Patio door RO 8" too tall etc.

For the siding I had contacted 5 companies, one older gent declined due to height, which I understand and he was straight forward about it. The other 4 set appointments but no call, no show. Ended up installing 36+SQ of siding myself. Turned out it was a good thing though. Framers did horrible job attaching the siding and I spent HOURS fixing it as I went. Many high up panels missed the studs and were loose, panels actually overlapping, joints in the middle of cavities and not on studs etc.

Spray foamers, the only one of 3 that gave a written quote had to come back 3 times due to missed areas. Also left me with a mess on my fiberglass tub that to this day hasn't gone away. Was going to have them give me a quote on the shop insulation and grill the estimator about removing the residue from the tub but they are out of business, RetroFoam of Nashville. The reviews dated after my job complain of similar problems.

Mudding and taping of drywall went great. Had a local guy who retired from Budd wheel manufacturing and does drywall as his "retirement" job.

Couple years ago we had a signed purchase agreement for 38 acres behind us that ran along our entire rear boundary. Day of closing it fell apart. 3 different title companies would not write a policy on it without a current survey. Sellers said no to the survey or I'd have to pay for it. Was not interested in taking on that potential risk because any one of the 8 adjacent property owners could have made a mess out of it. So it was subdivided into 6 funny shaped lots. We offered to buy a large 15 acre piece w/o road frontage but no dice. Was told by a local the relator turned the sellers against us and pushed for subdividing.

So recently we were at a land auction and bought 30 acres of a farm that was being parceled off. Closing was to be 8/7. Found out yesterday the property owner.....died. Now closing is up in the air.

The HVAC system is on summer #3 and working great.
It's a DIY dual mini-split system. Energy consumption is good, last month with a/c on constant only used <600 kwh.

Cut into the hillside and made some flatland for the wifes greenhouse and animal huts.

Originally planned to contract most of this build out but in the end I had to do LOTS just to keep the project moving.

Been 2+ weeks since I lined up a septic installer and gave him the permit, still no show. Highly recommended by the sanitation engineer and he is a local person.

Been 2 weeks since a framer looked at what I wanted, said easy straight forward, no reply.

Over a week since the most promising GC with no response so I txt him back, sold his house and moving a few hours away, this week!

Excavator wanted to close out the bill for the driveway but I needed more stone so I asked where he gets it from. Said they deliver it just let him know what I need, WTF. I've been telling him what I need and only get 1/2, at least he only billed for work done even if it is less than I needed.

There were more no shows, no replies and ones that showed up with no response.

They joys of moving into a new area!
At this rate I'm gonna have to bust out the shovel and pick to start hand digging the footers.

Welcome to TN. When we moved down here, had a lot of small projects to do and several large ones. Couldn't get responses, so after waiting 6 mos. when out an purchased a small Bobcat. Projects are DONE !!!

Poured a Patio and side walk (5'x60') recently.
Only regret was going with a broomed finish.
Should have left it just floated or troweled.

Eventually I would like to do a lean too over the side walk extending out at least 14' and 12' tall. Use crusher run limestone, compacted for final base.

Diesel Dan,

Sounds like a great project! Good luck.

I have a good friend that lives in Franklin, TN which is not too far from you. He may have some contacts... I'll check with him today.

EDIT: Here's his response...

Wish I knew some local contractors but if I did maybe our house wouldn't be falling down around us...

Sorry that didn't work out.

Best regards,

Scott

As an FYI, contractors here in TN only work in a small geographic area, as there is more work than everyone can handle!

The only exception to that is people that purchase the metal barn kits. They will send in their own crews and be gone in 3-5 days depending on the size of the building !!

Dan,
i moved a couple hours east of you a couple years ago, and this year started on my new place, and due to issues you highlight, other than monolithic slab, and trusses ,I am doing it all by myself. takes a lot of thought, but i figure saves my psyche. i've enjoyed your build, thanks, and keep posting

Update:
Cleared and leveled about 1 acre of land recently.
Cut about 10' into the hillside, much deeper than I expected to get it level. Pushed LOTS of dirt, D6R for 43 hrs.

Starting the 18' x 48' lean-to addition.
Painting the rafters, and bottom of osb light blue to keep bugs/birds from nesting. Apparently they think it's the sky.

Lean-to is done....and full:confused:
So glad I found that old scissor lift. Was a life saver on this project.
The blue seems to have worked. Had no issues with insects/bees trying to build nests last summer.

After too many years finally had some spray foam done in the shop. Ceiling and top 8' of the walls. Leaving the bottom 8' so I can do more wiring and then close up with 6" of fiberglass before covering. Foam prices have really jumped in the last 7 yrs!
