Yup, the little lady reports an envelope was just dropped off by Fedex. lol.

Do you think the authorities would be interested in the contents of these envelopes/packages to look for fingerprints, etc.

This appears to be a high dollar scam. I would think someone (whatever entity is going to be reimbursing those who participated in this auction for example) would be very interested in nailing the perpetrator.

Best regards,

Scott

We should all bombard Zoro now asking for a flash sale! If only they knew how many 211's with $400 in accessories they could sell after all the people who now have their hopes up in getting a good deal on a 211.

One word of caution for those who got taken. Go through the PayPal/eBay channel and don't do a credit card chargeback. A chargeback is a good way to get eBay to lock/close your account, even if you were scammed.

JME but every time my bank was notified and got involved with an ebay/paypal dispute, ebay/pp immediately stopped communication with me and referred me to my bank for everything. I dont know what happened behind the scenes or if they somehow shared liability, but in one case my bank denied my cash bc $1500 on ~$10k of new night-vision gear was too good of a deal, and ebay/pp wouldnt discuss it afterward. Buyer protection? Nope, buy at your own risk.

No. Internet crime is so low level these days. Nothing will be done about it at all.

I really dont know how true that is.

YEars ago I got screwed over by a seller in Florida for about $1500. I contacted the local PD as well as these guys.
http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx

I talked to officers at both locations and the local PD paid a visit to the dude so he shipped me a box of broken parts. Paypal ended up recovering the money months later.

With the size of this scam I would definitely contact IC3

When it sounds too good to be true, when it looks too good to be true, and when your gut tells you its a scam, it is a scam.

Sorry guys, hope they find the punk and you get your money back.

So now that we know it's a scam... anyone think it's newsworthy? $100k+ ebay scam? And this guy's gonna get off scot free?

damn, sorry to read this. all these guys saying "shoulda known better" could really keep that stuff to themselves. people get scammed, it happens.

hell, if i hadn't got to this thread late i might've jumped into the feeding frenzy and i'm really cautious and buy from ebay all the time.

Wenzel? What are you referencing?

yeah, this guy needs to get Wenzel'd. that was a biiig deal at the time and he too got what he had coming to him.

i think its only fair the OP should be banned for a week on principle. lol.

:banhim:

i gotta say im disappointed the scammer didn't print out some kinda picture on the paper he sent out, but i feel bad so many people have to deal with this headache..

i actually spent a little time learning how to get onto a few sites on the deep web.. you can literally buy people's paypal accounts that have a positive balance in them for like 10% of the balance or something crazy like that.. i wouldnt even be suprised if all that feedback on the guy's ebay account was all done over a day or two, and a few people figured out how to manipulate ebay's site.. there's people offering hacking services for money all over the place. its unreal how many people advertise their service to screw other people out of their money..

ebay will probably take a bit of hit from this one, but more than likely whoever did this made off with most of the money he recieved.. his other big purchases that he made might have just been a way to get the money out of his paypal account asap...

Once the shipment is marked as 'received' the funds are available in his Paypal. Quick transfer before claims are in the works and BAM he just made of with the purchase price of that welder.

I would imagine he will have Paypal after him as it seems they stand to lose A LOT if they don't lock his account up tight.

That is not how it works. He had funds available instantly.

I have to wonder, with the separation of eBay and PP, if he won't have both companies' lawyers after him.

FWIW, it's not just an Internet crime. The fact that Fedex was involved in the scam and it crossed state/international lines makes it also a mail fraud case. I've seen postal inspectors investigate such things with less $ involved. Sorry for the folks that now need to deal with this hassle...

Strange, that's not how it worked when I sold. Paypal wouldn't release until shipment received. :dunno:

Carry on.

Was this a Canadian thing or were you selling high risk items? I posted this earlier. I have never had funds held and I sell rather erratically and when I do it is always different items and usually thousands of dollars.

The problem is that is not how paypal handles things. That seller has been around long enough and "sold" other welders. Paypal may have locked things down due to volume at a certain point, but they definitely got a ton of money before that happened. Paypal says they can hold it for 21 days if they think it is needed and volume of sales is the only reason this seller would fit.

From Paypal's website:

Payment delays typically affect new sellers or sellers in categories that have a higher than average rate of refunds, disputes, or chargebacks.

In deciding whether to hold payments in a pending balance, we review many factors. These factors include transaction activity, the rate of customer disputes, the type of business, average delivery time, customer satisfaction, and history. We understand that some experienced sellers may be affected. While history with PayPal is important, it's only one of many factors we consider.

Here are some common reasons we may hold payments in a pending balance:

You have limited history or selling activity.

You have low Detailed Seller Ratings, negative Feedback, or other indication of below-
standard performance on eBay.

You have a high rate of customer refunds, disputes, claims, or chargebacks.

You're selling in a high risk category or industry such as tickets, travel, gift certificates, computers, consumer electronics, or mobile phones.

Your business or selling activity is inconsistent. For example, you have a spike in selling activity, your average selling price changes, or you started selling in a new category.

The account information you have provided is incomplete or inaccurate, or we're uncertain about the information you've provided.

Your withdrawal activity has changed.

They held mine with no explanation on a ten year old account selling motorcycle parts.

Was it something you had sold before? They could consider them high risk if they were used (worried about stolen parts). This is just my thoughts only paypal could truly answer that.

Nope, nor does it matter at this point. I got my money when delivery was confirmed. I think sometimes they just do it to screw with people.

I agree, as far as I am concerned both paypal and ebay have no rhyme or reason.

I've learned never to buy off of EBay ever again.

Dude was a member for over a year, feedback score of 100% with 146+ entries at the time of order, 8-12 positive feedback showing from people who have bought the Miller 211 in subject line...

And then this happens.

Nope...not spending more than $40 at a time on there ever again

I recently bought a cam set off ebay from a guy who had been on ebay 11 years and had more than 42,000 sales. Feedback 98.6
When I opened the cam box, the new cam had a huge chunk out of it. No damage to the box or the plastic bag, no broken off chip in the bag. I went to ebay to contact the seller and his account is closed.

Comp cams sent me another but you never know. Dude may have died

FWIW, the woman that I spoke to at PayPal told me that "your [my] funds will be on hold in the seller's account until PayPal closes the dispute." Pretty clear that PayPal at least has control of the sellers $$. Who knows if PayPal held it all, or if the seller even attempted a withdrawal, but the PayPal rep had complete and full confidence that I would have my money back at the latest 10 days once they investigate and give the seller time to reply.

Lol. She was just reading a script. She didnt log into his account to verify there were funds reserved for you. Most, if not all, was immediately cashed out or spent. Refunds will be coming from mr paypal inc. and the seller/hacker/scammer is long gone. He is not going to respond any more.....
