What about friction ring or pin detent has some listings say? I have 1.5 amp M18 not good for this wrench?

Model # 2861-20 is the friction ring model. This is what most automotive style impact wrenches use. The sockets pop on and off without needing a pick to depress a pin on the anvil to remove the socket. For the DIY use you're describing, you will want the friction ring. A 1.5Ah battery will work fine. A 2.0 will give you slightly more run time. An XC/HD battery (3.0-9.0) will give you both more power (slight to noticeable increase) and run time (very, very noticeable increase). If you're not working on cars all day all the time, don't sweat it so much. Use it, and you'll know pretty quickly if you need a bigger battery.

Because of compactness? Too big for engine work?

Yes, both. It CAN do lighter work, but your impact driver with an adapter on it is smaller and lighter. I mean, it's a tool, man. You can use it for whatever you want to. Can you use a 1/2" drive tool to pop off 5mm allen bolts and 10mm nuts? Of course, but bulkiness and overkill step into the equation. The internet can only give you so much direction. You'll know when to use it when you're in the middle of a job and it's in your hands.

Yes, mostly because of compactness. You won't be able to fit that into a lot of the tight spaces in engine compartments.

What would be the Milwaukee number for a 3/8 impact, fuel, friction fit and M18? Kind of leaning towards that. According to some it can do a lot and probably everything I will ask from it.

The m18 fuel impact driver, 1/2" compact impact and 3/8" impact are all the same size really, the drive end is the only thing with any real difference.

Love my Milwaukee Mid-Tq with the compact battery, plenty of power and light. Very versatile gun.

Is there enough power from the mid torque to take off axle nuts on a fullsize Chevy truck (I'm not sure of the torque spec)? I have some bearing hubs to change. That would probably the heaviest use I would need it for aside from lugnuts. I just don't want to be disappointed in its power. I currently have a 2nd gen craftsman 19.2 1/2" impact that is rated at 300 ft lbs. It works ok but some lugnuts take a few seconds to break free. I just wanted something more powerful that wasn't a huge jump in size.

Yes there is. I used to take the lug nuts off my fullsize 1 ton dually with the old Craftsman C3 rated at 200ft/lbs. The M18 Mid-torque is 600ft/lbs and blows that away.

The mid-torque is a great compromise of size and power. I didn't want the bigger/heavier high-torque model, and I don't need 1400ft/lbs of breakaway torque. I'm happy with the Mid-torque.

Getting ready to pull the trigger on a Milwaukee 2754-20 FUEL M18 at CPO for $159. Going to add the boot and some Knipex pliers to get free shipping. Anyone know of any sales before I do this?
Why 2754 and not 2861?

OK its $30.00 more for the 1/2 inch then the 3/8 inch. Tough call here. Help!

Not tough at all. The mid torque is not much bigger than the 3/8 but with 3x the breakaway torque. No brainer. I have both as well as the high torque.

Went for the 1/2 inch 2861-20, with boot and two Milwaukee vise grips (to get free shipping) for $218. Used the $20 coupon.

This forum has done terrible things to my bank account. Since Christmas I've caught the Milwaukee bug and have:
2656 1/4 inch Impact Driver
2704 1/2 inch Fuel Hammer Drill
2861 1/2 inch Fuel Impact Wrench
When will it end?

My new setup is the mid torque 1/2" wrench and the hex impact driver with a 3/8" wrench impact insert. Although the impact driver doesn't have the torque of the 3/8" impact wrench it also serves as a great driver for a variety of bits, and is more versatile.

I would like to get a smaller battery for the driver to make it more compact- all I have are 5.0s

Good choice-I've been pleased with the Milwaukee vice grips.

I haven't bought a boot yet, so I used some self fusing silicone tape to help protect the high spots on the wrench. It will come off without leaving any residue.

My guess is there is a physical limitation with a 3/8 anvil. Either fatigue or static strength is not sufficient for that level of torque.

Then I'll buy it with no warranty. I sometimes use 3/8 impact swivels with the heavy 1/2" Milwaukee. Nothing broken yet but then I don't buy my sockets at harbor freight.

Anyone recommend a starter set of 1/2 inch impact sockets? I will be doing auto work (lug nuts, brake and shocks etc.) I have both foreign and domestic cars.

Ive been using the 3/8ths tektons. And they have held up well. Even used them with an adapter on my 1/2” IR 20v impact, they busted off some pretty gnarly exhaust bolts today. Theyve held up so well i ordered the 1/2" sets in metric before i left the salvage yard lol..

I like the cases too, easy to stay organized and make sure you leave with all your shiz when you have to go out to the salvage or a friends haus.

Are you familiar with these torque impact sockets? Got them for my BMW. Just wondering how well they work.

Honestly no. Ive always used a regular impact socket on my former bmw. At my dealership, i dont know if any of our used techs or lube techs have specialty sockets.
