Congratulations on the trophy. I had forgot that you had the fastback, I enjoyed the trip back through the thread on the build.

BB: thanks for giving me the page #'s to your Mustang build. since I use the 100 views per page I found it on post #89 which is page 2 today and somedays page #1. I'm looking forward to reading more about it as i get time. Thanks and again WELL DONE!!

I'm with the guys wondering how you will manage to keep sawdust and debris out of the engine without an air filter on it. can you make some sore of enclosed cage around it to maybe filter the air getting to the engine?

looks like you are heading for the home stretch to sawing some logs.

good luck!!

Progress is a great thing at our age no matter how small.
congrats on the new trophy.

I pulled my 70 cobera jet mustang out the other day and made 2 left turns leaving the driveway and suddenly it wouldn't steer to the left any longer.
A good car show was missed but a new steering box solved my problem.

Watching to see the first log sawed into lumber.

Don

Don so true! Each day paid for with something to show for the air we can, hopefully, can still breathe. I'm shooting for dust before Thanksgiving.

I'm smelling sawdust!!

Did you say there is no air cleaner on the engine?:shocking:

Maybe there'll be no dust in the air :lol_hitti

None yet! I have two concerns. The first is finding the right air cleaner. As it was so difficult to find what carburetor was even on this engine, and original air cleaners for this carburetor run 50 to 100 dollars, it's not likely it will have an original. Than being said, an aftermarket air cleaner will have to be found that fits. The second problem I see is function. As the man who owned this mill is an engine mechanic by trade, I suspect he left the air cleaner off by design. None was to be found anywhere near the mill when I took it down. I believe it would have (read will) interfere with the operation of the governor. Start up demand overrides the vacuum by switch without an air cleaner. The drag one would put on the engine may very well cause it to flood out/shut down each time more power is demanded. Perhaps not true with a large diesel or other engine that is way over the needs demanded upon it but how close can this engine be restricted when the blade operates at 600 RPM? I would like to find that out as cheaply as possible. The engine draws air from the opposite end. The carb. will be sixteen feet from the blade with the fan blowing toward the saw. This, coupled with the fact it will not see industrial use, leads me to believe the problem will be greater if I restrict the governor!

Thanks Dwight. Glad you appreciate the work that went into getting there. It's too bad personal involvement is not taken into consideration when these cars are being judged.

Thanks drives. Check out my answer to Andy. More to this problem that meets the eye! Most of the dust will end up in a pit below the mill.

If I'm understanding you right you're saying the increased intake restriction could have an unwanted effect on governor operation? I would find that very surprising. the only reason a mechanic leaves an air cleaner off is he's using starting fluid because he doesn't want to take time to fix the engine. IMHO. Auto parts stores have really cheap air cleaners, but I put a Ford V-8 oil bath air cleaner on my 48 Chevy Show Truck with a little adapter ring off the lathe.

I would hate to see you run it without an air cleaner.

Thanks Dwight. Glad you appreciate the work that went into getting there. It's too bad personal involvement is not taken into consideration when these cars are being judged.

You said a lot in that one sentence!

I wish I had an old Ford oil bath cleaner. I do plan to go an see what's available at the parts store. How many cheap chrome ones have I thrown away?? What I really need is a six cylinder tachometer. See them on ebay but no body will confirm they work.

Well I got a tach. and an air cleaner that I have yet to check for fit. The power plant is connected to the drive shaft. It was an all day Friday job working with blocks and a pry bar once I got it inside the saw shed. Guess the old ticker is in reasonable shape or I wouldn't be writing this. Got an oil filter too and some anti freeze. If it warms up I may crank her up today for a short run. I'm saving the two small logs I have for Thanksgiving Day as I have a crew coming over for a feed.

Thanksgiving can't get here soon enough for me, I can smell the fresh cut wood already!

All the sawdust will wind up in the pit, and your ears, pockets, Ginny's sink...

Don't I know it. I put on a pocket T shirt last night to wear as an extra layer to sleep in and was getting jabbed in several places. Turned out to be wood chips from the shop. Fortunately, I got them out before I jumped in.

First picture to show my expensive air cleaner :) Also shows the lawn mower choke control I set up. It can be locked down so as not to vibrate toward closed. Second picture is the original guard the man had set up in front of the blade. It was set up on two pieces of rebar that stick up into the pipes about a foot so it can be lifted off for access. I set it up the same way after repairing it. Works great! I got the belts driving the carriage and all is well with its operation. I am working with Andy to dope out the idiosyncrasies of the governing system. I'm working hard to find space so I can pack as much information as I can in. It isn't every day one gets such a wonderful opportunity. Pushing doors open by yourself all the time leaves a guy anxious to be done. This opportunity leaves me excited about thinking on a higher level. Thanks Andy for all the guidance you have given me!

Glad to see that you are almost there. I like the safe guards. The one sawmill I have seen in operation does not seem to have a guard around the blade and I cringe as I watch them use it. I do like watching though.

Not sure I helped any but I'm glad you're getting there!!

Looks like you're using an AA as a driveshaft guard as well.:lol_hitti

Are we going to be cutting pine logs?

Pine logs for sure but Magnolia is what I have ready. AA ???? It works well

Went to use my Packmaster 38 xl plasma arc (I used it a few days ago and it worked fine) Nothing happens. Usually the air comes through and once ground is made pull trigger no problem. I did find loose wire in power to machine but it appears to be inside. No blower even comes on. I suspect solenoid for air or switch but this thing is like Fort Knox to get into and I understand the company does not support it for parts. It has had little use and is U.S. made.

Made this hoe after tearing apart the plasma arc, assembling it, and ending up with no more than a low hum. Toast as the part I need (read think) is no longer made. The hoe was intended to be long handle but it worked so well Ginny convinced me to make a short handle for it.
As you can see I used a circular saw blade and sharpened only the corners. This thing is tough. It will even dig dog fennel out of asphalt! Handle is made from persimmon. I used the remains of a Model A oil filler tube (saved from another project) to make the ferrule. A scrap piece of 1/2 inch cold roll drilled and pinned with a rivet made from a scrap piece of Model A brake rod left over from my clutch release for the mill. Still need to linseed oil it and varnish; if I can get Ginny to let go of it.

Thanks to Bob, Steve, and Dwight for your kind words.

These pictures are of, from left to right, the sequence of one cut; as I do not have a video camera. In the first picture the log has been squared on three sides and is half way to the saw. The last pictures are of the same cut. This is the first time I have ever run a sawmill other than pulling the stick once or twice to return a carriage on my friend's mill. It's like your first book of matches; stolen from Dad's cigarette draw. You start looking for things to burn! :bounce:

Hey Bobby, as well said by all....AWESOME. I was lucky enough to actually work on a mill very similar. It was really cool to turn logs into lumber for a deck I was building at the time.

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Great to know you're out there Redwolf. Thanks for the good words. Is Redwolf your given name? I'm referring to Native American ancestry?

Dan Happy Thanksgiving to you and the family also. It is fun. I plan to see if a return spring on the governor makes it run at a lower RPM between cuts today; just tweak it a little. When it gets a little warmer hang up the mill tools so it will LOOK like I know what i'm doing.

Cutting before Thanksgiving!!:bowdown::bowdown:

It's gratifying to set a schedule and then beat it.

Love the action shots!:thumbup::thumbup:

Great job Bobby! I like how you flip the slats away from the blade.

Do you plan to make a flip down table to keep finished boards off the ground?

Thanks Andy! I did put a spring (the weakest one I could find) for a return on the governor. For some reason, even a slight pull limited my pickup acceleration when it kicked in. I took it off and everything runs fine. Southern Magnolia is hard and dense! I have a 3X6 piece left over. I am thinking about using it to make a handle for a cant hook. Flipping logs without one is killing me. I do plan to make a table once I saw some wood that is not too nice to save for something else. Have A Happy Thanksgiving!

Did you put the spring on the carburetor to pull the throttle closed?

Do you have the iron for a cant hook? New ones are a bit rich, sometimes you see them in antique shops. Half of an old pair of ice tongs gives you the shape you want. If you like I'll pound out something crude and send it to you. You don't really need the teeth on the end of the handle at the mill.

You best find someone with a modern cell phone to make a video and post if on You Tube. We need to hear that governor kick in when the blade starts to bite.
