I found these along with some Hazet, Heyco, and Walter wrenches in a lot of tools I recently purchased. All Germany/W. Germany. Don't know much about them.

I just picked up a Dowidat 24mm 3/4 drive socket at an estate sale. The person it belonged to was a big Ford guy, only into prewar cars. All of his stuff was SAE and 1/2" drive; I didn't see anything else that it could have paired with, but I just had to buy it.

What's with those German brothers? The Dassler brothers make Adidas and Puma on opposite sides of the river and the workers, the story goes, were not allowed to speak to each other. The Albrecht brothers split up Aldi (Abrecht discount) into Aldi Nord and Sud after a fight over whether or not to sell cigarettes. The U S Aldi belongs to Aldi Sud. We have it in the US, too. Peterbilt trucks was founded by Peter Kenworth. I don't know what went wrong there.

The actual story of the Dassler brothers is very politically charged, I have a book called Sneaker Freaker that goes into some detail on the two brothers.

If you watch the film The Royal Tenenbaums, Chas wears a red Adidas jumpsuit with Puma trainers.

When I first saw the film, I thought it was because Chas hated his brother in the film, and the outfit was a nod to the Dassler brothers' feud. Several years later, I had an opportunity to ask one of the costume directors of the film if that was intentional. Unfortunately, it was a happy accident, she couldn't find a suitable pair of Nike trainers, and she thought wearing all Adidas was just too corny.

Like the off set box wrench - I thought I had one, and looked, mine is King **** made in England 6, 7 MM. Good for break bleeders. Those other wrenches I have used in the past working in euro motorcycle shops, (old shops) They look a little like the Indestro combo wrench I have https://www.ebay.com/itm/Indestro-N...691471?hash=item46c1f3ce4f:g:MIgAAOSwajtgOmCo

DOE's don't usually do a thing for me, but those ^DOWIDAT's come close to changing my mind. Nice grab, Loga_3!

Let's go for a partial show of part of my Dowidat tools:

- 9A 1/2 metric ratchet set circa 1985 (note the push thru ratchet)

IMG_20230624_154341.jpgIMG_20230624_154356.jpg

- NOS Dowidat N°6 DOE 6 to 32 mm complete set in original case circa 1985

IMG_20230624_154504.jpg IMG_20230624_154527.jpgIMG_20230624_154557.jpg

More to come soon,

Posted these on the garage sale thread,, but will add here as well. Copying and pasting the other post

Picked up from a local sale site, similar to Craig's list
All are Dowidat. Not particularly common here, so a happy find, for a price I'm ok with.

Metric 3/8 drive set, almost complete, give me something to do to complete it. Arrived with one sae socket which I will replace and one gedore (which at least is in the same family)
20240314_115219.jpg

1/4 drive, this isn't metric but is a BA set, need to research this one a little more.

20240314_115236.jpg

And lastly three socket spanners
12x13, 14x15, & 13x17

20240314_115301.jpg

Edit to add, most stamped Germany. A few no country marked

Double open end Dowidat are common finds in older Mercedes Benz trunk tool kits. They are branded Mercedes Benz on the flip side.
Here are a couple from one of my old Panzers:

BA threads were used in the Electrical Industry ,a lot of switchgear and components BA threads even light fittings had ba grounding studs , I still have a full set of BA nut drives as old equipment use these threads. Metric threads have replaced them and made things easier . But what you have is a fabulous item well worthy of owning and the condition is superb. Lucky you .

B.A. stands for “British Association”.

These are a series of fine threads, intended primarily for instrument work, but used in all sorts of small equipment, and in the electrical trades.

If you think of B.A. as being the British equivalent of the Unified “numbered” series, you won’t be far wrong. However, although the U.K. adopted Unified threads in the late ‘50’s, the “numbered” series was not adopted, so B.A. sizes were used as standard till metric crept in, and are still used in some industries today.

They are, in fact, metric threads (although their dimensions are specified in inches). 0 BA is 6mm, and each subsequent size is 90% of the previous. A set of 0 to 8 will cover most needs, though you can find much smaller.

It’s actually a perfectly logical system, perhaps more so than ISO metric, where a 1mm size difference is too small at larger sizes, and too big at the smaller ones.

Nice Dowidat set, obviously high quality. I believe the spinner handles (the handle portion at least) were made by Belzer. The shape is identical.

Thanks for the info @oldpliers1 & @Dave 425 I was aware of BA sets and understood that they were primarily used in electronics. So getting the full info on them was great. Have gone though these with more care and cleaned them up where needed, the two sockets on the right have been removed as they were random small poor quality metric sockets, so my set is 0 to 7 only, so partially incomplete, but should cover a lot of what I might use it for. From what I can tell the no 2 might have been the only one used.

It doesn’t look as though either of the sets have been heavily used. They’re quite a find in this condition.

Although I don’t have a lot of experience with Dowidat, I’ve always thought they were much higher quality than Gedore. I think the steel / hardening is better, as is the finishing.

If you look at some old / well used Dowidat there’s rarely any damage - even the jaws of open end wrenches are still good.

I think Dowidat can probably be considered comparable quality to the older Hazet.

I have dealt with high current switchgear and panels since I was a 15 year old apprentice The BA threads and fine pitch threads are very interesting and I have not seen a better set than what you own , just finding BA nut drivers and spanners ( wrenches ) have always been a quest. Too me personally it’s one of the best things I have seen on this site. Regards from Australia. Andy

Ive just found a Dowidat #72 /26" shifter ..............an rather unusual configuration for a big shifter........I have other assorted Dowidat tools ,including the very common 10" and 12 " shifters that are branded Dowidat/Made In Australia.............way back 65 years ago ,I had a Dowidat Flexi-Flat swivel head in Whitworth ............this one spanner would dismantle and rebuild the complete BSA 650 motorcycle I found propped against a tree as a 12 year old........the rest of my Dowidat tools are a combination marked as AF and Metric ......such as 3/4/19mm .

I have the 8& 12 and have a few screwdrivers made by turner in Melbourne pre Stanley . Dowidat Australia were a joint venture with Coffey, I could find NOS dowidat up till mid 80s, I gather Dowidat and Zircalloy ( Lithgow small arms )are or were the true locally made as their is conjecture on the Sidchrome / bahco. Regards from SEQ

My 15 " Sidchrome is definitely Bahco ,as its marked 'made in sweden'...........have lots of Zircalloy open enders from army stuff I bought ,all big sizes............Im presently trying to find a set of Whitworth rings that arent coin collector prices ............had stroke of luck with Whit sockets ,a guy was taking the ratchet drives out of NOS sets ,and dumping the Whitworth.

I picked up my first one. It will go with my 4” collection I started last year. There was a 6” one and the same pile but I left it there.

I will keep an eye out and check my disused pile I get the coin collector reference Looking at Sidchrome prices. I will send the AF dowidat your way. As an apprentice I had a local specialist tool store at Carlingford that was loaded with dowidat always at a premium price. The physical size of the dowidat was why a lot of mechanics liked them they were smaller and perfect for imported cars. ( I have a mate with a cave full )

No OZ markings ? On the dowidats I have a Oz Dowidat catalogue from the late 60s my shifters are marked ,so the ring and open Enders were not stamped? I gather you are knowledgeable on the product I would be interested to hear as I thought they were stamped OZ or German . I did have a German shifter which was more HD than the OZ made stuff I had it dipped in High voltage insulation it was nice, but it was stolen. Cheers

I suspect the cutoff point will be 1983 ,when Hawke smashed the tariff wall that protected Australian industry from overseas imports.

Good point, yet Stanley Australia upped their product, Crescent stopped being an importer but took rough castings and finished them here, Sidchrome started making tools for the electrical industry & more available . Yet it was the end of English tools. the greed of globalisation started , the bastardisation of the hardware and tool stores happened at that time. Cheers

Never heard of these before.

Next you all are going to be posting threads about the WUTUGONA brand that preceded these and the GONAYOOSIT brand tools that followed it.
