Re: My garage, repurposed!

Subscribed. Office supplies are great for garages. And I thought I was getting good at craigslist hunting. I have much to learn.

Thanks smedly! Your garage was some of my early motivation to start using office cabinets! It's come a long ways and I have garage journal to thank for the inspiration.

I liked your row of laterals.

Re: My garage, repurposed!

Made some deals today! Now I've got some painting to do. Got these 4 cabinets for 140! And traded some plastic storage bins for a craftsman dual action sander to start prepping them.

Pretty excited about these. Also picked up a new 18v grinder to add to my dewalt cordless collection. On clearance at HD for 79 and used a 5 off Coupon.

While there I found windshield wipers on clearance for 6.57 a piece and buy one get one free! So I stocked up on those for a future change out.

Good morning so far! Time to start some more rearranging!

Great finds. I never find those around here. Although, there is a place that finds them and reselling them for a lot of money.

That's a treasure find on those parts cabinets. Not easy to find them anymore. Too many people these days know us home garage and shop people covet them. You did well on those!

ps: your garage looks great!

Re: My garage, repurposed!

Made some progress today. Started prepping, removed all hardware and started cleaning. The shorter cabinets are rough. A lot of rust and sticker residue and tape residue in the drawer fronts.

Thanks guys, I know what you mean Herb. That's why I wasn't hesitant to pay for these because I know how fast they go on Craigslist. This guy was a tool collector and had a garage full of different cabinets. It was fun to shoot the breeze with him about tool collecting and his collection.

I think they're going to look pretty nice. They cleaned up pretty well with a wire brush drill attachment and a wire wheel on the new Dewalt angle grinder. Then I wiped them down with a strong degreaser I get from work and some goof off on some of the sticker residue.

One thing I love about getting these old cabinets is finding little time stamp pieces inside them. They are all labeled steel case on the inside. I found meter history cards from Puget Power on the inside dated back to '64 with a lot of local addresses I recognize. I also found some really old 3 cent US postal stamps. I guess that doesn't necessarily mean the cabinet is as old as '64 but gotta be close.

My garage, repurposed!

Those cabinets are going to be great. I'd love to find some like that.

LLAP

.

Thanks Radio Ron. I've got a mock up plan in my head for the back wall of my garage. The three base cabinets as a bench with two taller ones on each side. I'm going to build a little platform to raise them up a few inches and I have some nice hardwood I've been saving to use as a bench top. Then I want to have a bench top drill press and belt sander on that bench. Maybe a vise too.

Keep your eye on Craigslist. I find stuff most when I'm not looking for it. These were in the tool section advertised as tool storage. I often look in the furniture section too and just search file cabinet to see what types are for sale.

Meter history cards from Puget Power which is probably now Puget Sound Energy. Pretty cool finds I think.

Re: My garage, repurposed!

Some more prepping and paint work done this weekend. Going to be a week or two before I get all the drawer fronts cleaned up but I got the frames painted. They came out really nice. Sprayed first with 2 in 1 paint and primer then rolled the 2nd coat of just paint.

Re: My garage, repurposed!

SD: nice work on the cabinets and great set up. do you have a nice piece of butcherblock or 1/4 or 3/8 piece of steel to make a nice bench top? or what are your plans for the space?

just curious if you built a wood platform to set all your cabinets on and is it out of 2 x 4's or do tell?

were those stamps worth anything?

Thanks... I have a nice piece of hardwood I was going to use but found out it was too short depth wise so I'm rethinking it. Thinking of a nice piece of 3/4 plywood cut to size and doubled up maybe. Keeping my eyes out on CL for anything that jumps out at me. Hadn't thought about doing a metal top. Maybe I'll look into that.

Yea I did build a platform out of 2 x 4's. Went to put it all in place and the floor has the normal slope forward I didn't think about so I had some 1x3 Pine boards that brought it up perfect. But they weren't painted. I didn't worry about it as I was too impatient and wanted to get it all in place. Thinking I'll mount the red craftsman vise I got from you on this bench after I clean it up.

I checked the stamps on eBay but didn't come up with much. Any ideas on if they may be worth anything?

SD: what size is your bench top and i'll see if i have anything after i finish my shelving? or i'll see if i can help you find a nice piece of steel 1/8 or thicker. you probably should have a little lip in case you need to clamp something and it will set you Craftsman out in front of the cabinets a bit to give you a little more access and options to use it.

nice thinking on the platform.

sorry no idea on the stamps, but don't throw them out just yet. i might put the receipts in the drawer of one of the cabinets for fun and maybe in a zip lock bag or underneath a small board or metal box.

looks good, but man that is a lot of work. I been working on a blue cabinet like your tall red one, and I'm still not done. Mine were a little rusted so I had to sand to bare metal. You should have enough storage for just about anything.:)

Thanks. That would make for a nice work surface. I kept all the cards and stamps. The stamps came in a wax type little envelop. Just fascinates me to think of their journey and where they may have been since 1937 to stay in good shape. Maybe 100's of places or maybe just sat in those drawers for 50+ years. You never know!

You're right. It is a lot of work. I just admire the vintage stuff, even though I'm painting it. These were all pretty rusty. Got a combination of wire wheel on hand drill, wire wheel and sanding wheel on an angle grinder, 3m green scotch rite pads and a plain 220 grit sand paper. I focused mainly on what was visible not being so particular on the back or sides. Maybe when I move if they're going to be away from a wall but for now the drawer fronts are keeping me busy. [emoji26]My wife does ask " what do you need so many cabinets for?" I'm still young and love collecting tools so little does she know they'll fill up fast! [emoji6]

Curious on what paint you used to roll second coat and why roll since you sprayed first coat. Did you use same color, brand, roller type. I'm curious if it's easier than spraying.

There were a couple reasons. It was dumping rain all weekend so I couldn't paint outside but I still wanted to paint. I like the spray I use because it is two in one primer plus paint so it adheres better but obviously created a ton of overspray. I wanted a second coat for strength and to get it to look more uniform. The big legal file was black and after one coat with the spray it looked uneven with dark spots so I rolled to get a more even uniform look.

I think for small spots and sections like the fronts spray is fine but the entire side of a perfectly smooth cabinet was hard to get a uniform look so I find it easier to spray first and get the primer then roll the second coat.

I use rust oleum 2 in 1 gloss Apple red from Home Depot. The 2 in 1 is spray, it also comes in quarts but only in paint form without primer. I found it matches nearly perfect to craftsman red. I know some people on here use sunrise red but I couldn't find it with the primer included. Maybe it's out there somewhere though. I also use a small mini roller kit I get at HD for 2.50 and usually just toss after each use. Or rinse and reuse if I'm painting for a few days in a row.

Here are pics of what I use.

That's great info. I like that system and thought about that latex enamel instead of always using cans but the 2 in 1 then the other sounds like great idea. I have a mini spray gun I've thought using with that latex instead of oil cause of the clean up factor. If you had good luck with it it's something I'm gonna have to try.

BTW new setup looks great.

I bet you would have better results with a thick foam roller, it makes the paint look like you sprayed it. Might give it a try on the back side to see how you like it?

Thanks I'll try that. Rolling definitely takes away from the smooth finish you get from just spraying. But I'm not going for a car show type paint job here either so it worked for me.

Would I be correct that the "W. Holly Street" is Bellingham?

I'd say so. Lol. They're all from the northwest. A couple are stamped Puget Power, which I assume could have been the old power company before Puget Sound Energy was created.

^^Been a long time since I was there.^^ Born and stay until 5th grade and then south to Seattle. Lived on Southside of town, off State Street.

Awesome. It's beautiful up there. Especially along the shores of Samish Lake and Samish Bay. And out near Birch Bay and the islands. My wife and I have discussed moving up there near the Skagit valley, Fidalgo Island or Anacortes somewhere. I love Deception Pass and the sights out there. It doesn't have the same "hustle and bustle" feel of the general Puget Sound area with all the traffic and massive population.

Re: My garage, repurposed!

So I've scored some more freebies in the last week. I'm running out of room but keep getting ideas to re arrange and make room for everything. This one is an edsal work station. The guy also through in a 6ft power strip! Score! Bothell free. I'm thinking of putting it inside a pallet type shelf unit I have as a dedicated computer spot and bar height desk. I ordered a vintage gooseneck 1930's lamp off eBay to go on it. We'll see. I like the old vintage lamps and desk accessories.

064e04aa67ed50ec2fa2d8d24330aec8.jpg

Got this last week on my way home. It's ugly. Not sure if I'll repaint red and use it or get rid of it.

Got 4 drawers total cleaned and painted so far! They're a lot of work to get all the tape residue and sand the rust off. But it will all look nice when I get all done and drawer pulls installed.

1af570f3fce3ae6896c8d459e57d8003.jpg

Also lined up a Jet bench top drill press from a guy at work for $40... Says it just needs a chuck.

I also hit up a little variety store/flea market a guy has I met from craigslist. I bought a brand new Rubbermaid mop bucket and mop and a nice greenlee fish tape for $33. Don't need a mop now but when I move I'm doing up the floor in the new garage with epoxy or acid type stain and want to keep it clean and mopped once in a while. Plus I'm just a sucker for buying stuff I don't need! Lol[emoji12][emoji106]

6d7c6d5b535d4a6277a3840984f3c70b.jpg

The fish tape alone was worth 30 to me!!

My garage, repurposed!

God damnnnnnn you find some great stuff. I'm down right jealous. LOL

Haha. I browse craigslist and eBay probably a few hours total throughout the day, I sit at a desk at work and check every once in a while. Email on stuff and if I get it ok if not no worries. People just give stuff away when they could sell it. Today there was a nice black craftsman work bench with vise mounted and hand grinder. All for free. I emailed 23 minutes into it being on craigslist but it was spoken for already so I don't get all the deals. I keep what I want, sell some, trade some and give some to friends. All in all I've gotten a ton of stuff for free or really cheap. Plus I think I've said this before but I've been at my job close to 9 years and have removed equipment from a lot restaurants closing down. And most every time they are throwing stuff away I salvage and use or resell. I told my wife someday I may open a 2nd hand salvage type store and make it a full time gig. I love shows like storage wars, American Pickers and west end salvage. Someday...

My garage is a mess right now!

I could use some goats, they keep the grass mowed around a lagoon, which is hard to mow because of the steep sides and rocks. These goats around here bring about $50. each.

Re: My garage, repurposed!

I just picked up these two today. Feel like I got a good deal. The guy was asking 50 for the makita chop saw and 30 for the vise. I met up with him to buy the vise for 30 but ended up working a deal on both for $65.

Vise is in pretty good shape. And the saw works fine. Could use some cleanup but it will cut metal just fine.

Nice deals. I need a proper chop saw myself. I got a older Makita miter saw that has lower rpm that I use for metal. It's still doesn't work as good as a metal saw even though it's rpm matches ones on market today. You can't beat the price and should give you years of good use.

Thanks Gerard. That's what I was thinking, not brand new but will work for me and essentially I paid 30 for the vise and 35 for the saw. Upon reading the vise thread in here about Record vises I'm questioning if this one is an England good one or later China Irwin model. Maybe I'll post it in the vise thread and ask.

And a power strip too....? YOU ****!!!! You deserved that for all the finds you been getting. Maybe I should take a ride north, kick your ***, and knock that horseshoe lose. LOL Just kidding bro.
