SD: you've come a long way from the first day i met you at your garage up here in the PNW. your organization skills really show and I can't wait to see what you do to that wall that is just signs now.

also to maybe get the lumber and material off those shelves that you might need for something else how about a UNISTRUT HANGING LOFT from the ceiling if you have some room to install one?

keep up the great work and blow up some of that extra heat back up to the PNW when you think of it cause i'm still wearing my long underware.

cheers

Haha thanks. It sure looks a lot different than back then! I’ve thought about the loft storage but I feel like it’s start making the garage feel to small. Three solutions I can think of: get rid of some stuff, move to a house with a dedicated shop or get a small storage unit to store stuff not often used but don’t want to get rid of. Haha.

It’s starting a warm up here this week. Supposed to be in the 80’s this week and the news just said we can pack our coats up!

Spent some time this weekend organizing the sockets and ratchets, adding them into my craftsman chest.

Ratchet drawer:

Deep socket drawer with some small kits:

Regular sockets:

Also made these tool holders on the table saw for screwdrivers and others.

Now I’m left with all this that I cleaned out of the craftsman drawers. I need to figure out how I want to store the wrench racks. I think I’ll find a drawer somewhere for all the pipe wrenches that I never use.

My neighbor had found 3 good size pieces of oak blocks someone dropped at his dumpster at work. He gave me one so I cut this block out to start for a wooden mallet. Not sure what I’ll use for the handle yet.

Sweet! You're on a roll with this thread! Nice job with the organization. You sure have a lot of sockets...

Thanks! Yes, I bought the craftsman 300pc socket set years ago during a sale. Figured I’ll always have the one I need and I wanted a complete set rather than piecing sets together over time. It’s nice to have them organized and sorted better than they were. Sadly, I still find myself wanting the Gearwrench set that has its own thread on here!

I hung the wrench racks on the end of the mobile table for now. Not sure how long I’ll leave them there but they filled in that space and they’re easy to grab if I’m working on something on the bench.

SD: i actually passed on your pegboard on the sides of your cabinet idea to a member who's building a huge shop up near Vancouver, B.C.. he had a ton of pegboard and hooks from his last shop to use cause he's putting up a ton of slat wall in his new shop so i was trying to find a use for some and your cabinets fit the bill. nice work on yours and things are easy to change on peg boards if you want to re arrange later.

here's the link in case you want to see a quality build and he's a great guy too.

while Delta isn't my favorite tool maker a new bench top drill press is a good thing so it's good to have one. congrats.

take care and enjoy all that heat and i'm wearing 2 sweatshirts and long johns today. supposed to be 60's this weekend though so thanks for sending us a little heat.

Thanks Drives, I appreciate the reference! I checked out his thread and wow, that shop/house is amazing!

I have mixed feelings about Delta also but I feel like for what I’m doing this will work just fine. I’d been keeping my eye out on the swap n shops for a used one and when this one popped up I looked it up to see how it was reviewed. It had rave reviews back when it was new and the guy who had it said it was in great shape and did everything he needed(and he had a full shop) but he was upgrading to a floor standing model. I’ll see how it works out and maybe upgrade later. My other thoughts were to get a Harbor Freight model or a Wen as they are both inexpensive and have good reviews also.

It’s warm this week in the 80’s and cooling back down next week. Soaking it up now before the 100’s hit!

SD: good to hear your Delta might work ok for a while. keep up the great progress and best of luck on the french cleats and organizing.

funny you say the 100's cause my parents owned a condo in Sun City West for maybe 25 years and they would usually drive down from Seattle in October and come home in April or May once they had a week of 100 degree temps in a row.

i know it's a DRY HEAT, but I couldn't handle 120's even if in AC all the time.

glad you liked Turtle's build and he's just starting his house build to keep checking it out cause I bet as he fills up his shop he might have more than a few cool tools and stuff to show us.

Kind of a dumb question, but does anybody want to see some pictures of the boiler room at my hospital? I have the best crew of maintenance guys that I have ever worked with. I believe the boilers may be original to the building (1964), there are some cool old tools, bins, drill press, spare motors, etc, that we all seem to like. Of course, none of it is for sale, but it's awesome to see this stuff being used on a regular basis.

And if you guys like that, we have a pretty nice on site wood shop as well, (my maintenance guys happen to be a mix of experienced cabinet maker, welder, plumbers, and electrician. So they do all of our desks, counters, etc in house, and they do some really nice work (remember it's general office furniture, not grandmas walnut desk).

That sounds awesome. Whether you meant to post it here or not, I think it would be really cool and maybe other forum members would too! You are welcome to share some pics on this thread, I’d also encourage you to maybe start one of your own to share the work you all do so other forum members will see it as well.

Thanks for visiting my thread!

So glad I stumbled on this thread, awesome garage and use of space... Went through the whole thing!

Not sure if I saw it, or you posted it... but where did you get the metal shelves on the right (I think) side of your garage?

Thanks!

Thank you for taking the time to visit and read through! I actually got the racks like 10 years ago from a McDonalds that was being torn down. I work for a company who supplies for them and we were removing some equipment and they were going to toss them! A coworker and I went back on a Saturday and picked them up. Wish I could’ve gotten more. They are very heavy duty, rated at 1500lbs per shelf.

Thanks again for checking out my thread!

Found some goodies on Craigslist today to add to the collection, a craftsman router, table and some bits and accessories. Also made a trip to Harbor Freight for some new router bits and a forstner bit set. We’ll see how they hold up. And then a trip to HD for some stuff, picked up some BLO to try out for Drives!

Well, I didn’t waste any time with the router. I re did the fence and built it a little stand out of this shelf I already had. Just added a new top and a brace across the back for support.

90015b03865d1bde54f405ebbbf9a6ee.jpg

I cut a cut a hole in a small piece of plywood and added attached it to the router table with longer bolts for the dust collector attachment so I could attach the shop vac. Turned out good.

262f9caf9b98458c6f1c282d6ccfe71c.jpg

Utilized the router to put some slots in a drill press table with adjustable fence. Need to get a couple more 1/4 20 knobs for some small stop blocks.

e1aae38808a2eca96562456e8773e487.jpg

I also cut a piece of 3/4 plywood to fit on top of this file cabinet and tuck in this corner. This is a good spot for the DP, grinder and a vise. It’s on wheels so I can pull it out to use it then tucks in the corner with the shop vac. The file cabinet is a fire rated one, it’s HEAVY! That was a good freebie years ago!

a7d3192daa2b3c5306e90cffe03eac29.jpg

811c992186f08c7a97fb92a1eccdcf1d.jpg

I haven’t finished it yet, still need to make a permanent base, attach all the tools and maybe finish the plywood.

SD: i love all the new stuff you are thinking of and making. also nice to see that you are making everything to attach to your shop vac so your shop doesn't end up looking like a sawdust factory.

what are you putting BLO on? I used it on almost anything, but it's sticky for a bit. with the temps you have especially in summer if you set your items in the driveway and let the sun cook it on it almost ends up like an enamel. it takes time up here to dry, but i do like the patina it develops into.

also in case you hadn't read about stained rags make sure to either dispose of them in a metal can with a lid, dry them out on a clothes line, but DO NOT LEAVE THEM CRUMPLED UP IN A PILE ESPECIALLY ON A WOOD BENCH OR ON SOMETHING THAT WILL BURN.

REASON BEING THEY WILL OR CAN SELF IGNITE.

cheers!!

good luck

I just picked it up to try out. Maybe I’ll use it on the mallet I’m working on. Not sure yet. Might just do wipe on poly. No warm temps here today, it’s been raining all night which is very welcome!

Yeah I’m very aware of the stain and spontaneous combustion. I usually lie them outside my side door on the concrete to dry up before discarding them. Thinking about buying one of the metal disposals for them. Can’t be too careful!

I’ve seen spontaneous combustion happen at restaurants too with grease rags and/or piles of crumbs and debris coming out of a fryer sitting too long. A place in Tacoma had a bin start smoldering years ago. Also just read recently a teriyaki place burned down in Tacoma from a grease dumpster fire!

Just came across your thread. I will read through the whole thing when I get a chance. Just wanted to say that is a decent router you got. My dad gave me one when I first started and it served me well until I upgrade to a craftsman with a plunge base and 1/2" collet. That is the only down side is it only takes 1/4" bits. Love your shop.

Thanks Bret! Really appreciate the good words. The router works very well, but I have say after using it the small amount of time I have the way you loosen to adjust the depth is very flimsy. It’s suits me for now, someday maybe I’ll upgrade or leave this one in the table and get a compact cordless one. I’m really liking the Rigid cordless tool lineup. Thanks for reading!

Working on my first mallet! Love how it came out. Not perfect by any means, the neighbor gave me a beat up block of oak with some holes already in it that I used for the head. The handle is just a two by cut down and tapered. I drilled a 3/4” hole exactly centered and then chiseled and carved out the rest. Rounded the handle and edges on the router.

I wanted a contrast from head to handle. Handle is in BLO and head is some cherry stain I had in hand. Currently waiting on stain to dry before it gets a final sanding and poly coating and then a wrap on the handle for grip. Fun project!

Ok Davis I spent last night and this morning reading through your thread. It's pretty cool how you changed direction from the beginning. I have to say I like the current frame of mind and shop you have now. The house, pool, and yard are great. I don't know about the heat you have but I do deal with some heat here in CTX. Of course we have humidity that gets in the 90% don't think you have to deal with that.

So with your travels I assume you got rid of alot of the metal cabinets you had in the beginning I don't see alot in the new setup. I truly am envious of your side door in the garage and your side driveway with the gate. That is really cool. I would love to have that. Of course mine would be full of junk.

I do have one suggestion I want to throw out. I noticed you have a similar setup for hot water and softener. Here is my solution I can offer.

Just a basic frame with pegoboard mounted to it. If you want to see more details there are tons more pictures on my Flickr it is in April of 2017. It also starts on post #601 of my build thread. Maybe you could build a cabinet around yours and then mount tools or signs on the outside and store stuff inside as well.

20170430_110905 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I cringed when I saw you auto cleaning supplies but then you got the foam cannon and then some premium auto detailing stuff.

Am sorry to say the woodworking bug has bit you and that is a slippery slope. I really like all the projects you have been building.

I am going to steal that pressure washer hose reel ideal. Do you happen to have links to Amazon for what you bought. Is the hose flexible or does it fight you?

I also bookmarked the new LED's you just bought. Those would be great for my shed were my ceiling is low and I need some more light!

Great thread and great builds.

Anyways I will be following along.

Awesome man, thanks for taking the time to go through it all! It has changed directions over the years... i don't spend as much time out in the field as a technician like i used to, that's how i'd find a lot of freebies and such. I am now in a better sales position at the company i work for. With that i'm lucky to have some extra money to support my hobby's!

I'll have to go see what car washing supplies you're referencing, probably horrible stuff! Lol. I discovered better car washing methods last year following Obsessed Garage, The Rag Company etc and have spent a lot of money on very good microfiber mits and towels, the chemicals, the pressure washer setup etc. Not top of the line pressure washer or foam cannon but they work great for me! And i'm not washing Porches or anything

That is a great idea on the water heater, i just might have to do that. I like the idea of pegboard and wall space for more storage, the woodworking bug has hit me hard. I want to start stocking up on good bar clamps and such so that'd be a great spot to store them. I'm thinking about getting the big Bessey BT30 kit someday instead of buying a few here and there but it's a good investment... My Dad was big into shop, he was a carpenter for 25+ years and had every tool i can think of at some point, between me and my whole family we have a lot of the tools but when he passed a lot got sold because i wasn't able to take all of it(regret that!)

I have gotten rid of a lot of cabinets, i sold a lot of them when i got here in AZ just to tidy up and get more organized instead of having so many full. Some day if i every have a bigger shop i'll probably save more junk but i've been trying to clear some clutter and keep a bit more organized.

The LED lights are great! For the price, they work out awesome for my small space. If i had a huge shop obviously i'd get some bigger ones.

The heat here is rough but the pool helps a lot! you get used to it, same as when it's super cold out you spend less time outside. Well here it's about 3 months of brutal temps, less time in the garage=more time in the pool with the wife and kids! :rocker:

Thanks for following along, i'll be checking out all your pics on Flickr!

Hree are the links, the hose has been ok. I'm sure there are others that are more flexible. It seemed good in the beginning but the more i use it the more it tends to coil up. I really have to stretch it out straight and think about how i pull it around the cars and such. But it works, maybe when it wears out i'll get a better one. I'm thinking about how i can redo my setup, now that i've rearranged some things it's not as convenient to hook it all up.

Finished the mallet! A little sanding and 4 coats of poly on the head. BLO on the handle and let it sit out in the sun to bake. Then I ruffed up where the hand will go and wrapped it with the glue backed handle bar tape. Heated it up a bit with the heat gun to help the glue adhere better.

Mallet came out great. Good choice on the finish, and I like the handle. What's next?

SD: cool looking mallet!! just curious how you attached the handle cause i was thinking you'd use the hole to drive a dowel through the handle in that to hold the handle in place?

how did you like using the BLO? it takes weeks for it do dry up here this time of year even though we did get up to 70 degrees yesterday it's back to 40's and raining today.

hope you are enjoying the sunshine and keep up the great work in your garage while it's still cool enough to do so.

Thanks! Probably going to work on a small bar high table for our back patio. Still in the planning stages. Maybe some wall organizer cabinets for power tools and such.

I thought about that, the hole was actually there already in the block I had. The handle is just a simple wedge style so if it or the head breaks it can pop out easily and be replaced. The BLO is nice, no complaints for this project. I could see it leaving too much of a yellow tint on some projects that may be against a look you’re going for. But on this I like the contrast between the dark head and the handle so I’m happy with it. Plus I got to practice and see how I liked it.

Going to try some danish oil and wipe on poly next to see how I like them.

Found some awesome finds at a yard sale today! An audio visual cart from a school and a great assortment of clamps. I was just going to get the cart but found the clamps and worked a deal!

I took apart the outlets and re wired in a 14awg cord I had. The one in the cart didn’t have a ground prong on the plug and was pretty old.

I added this larger grommet/strain relief by boring out the existing hole with my Dremel.

Then I added a top with a piece of scrap birch plywood I had. Sanded, stained and coated with 4 coats of poly. Also added the bottom shelf which is a piece of MDF. Hit it with one coat of stain to darken it up.

The cart is height adjustable. I’d planned on putting a band saw on it but it turned out so nice I may use it to do computer work on as a desk.

Here’s all the clamps. 4 pipe clamps, 4 corner clamps and 3 Craftsman screw clamps to add to my collection. Going to make a clamp rack soon.

Got in my new 3M respirator with dust and vapor filters and a new RZ mask to try out also. I really like this 3M model, it has a quick release to let it hang down between dusty jobs. I used the RZ mask all day today, the only thing I don’t like is it makes me kind of sweaty around the edges. I’ll keep trying it out...

I’ve been in the search for a decent bench top band saw, that’s originally why I wanted this cart. I’d been debating on buying an older one and cleaning it up or a new store bought one. In researching all the 9” models they all seemed to be pretty much the same. Ryobi, Porter Cable, craftsman, Harbor Freight, Wen etc all had 2.5 amp motors and all look identical with power and adjustments all in the exact same spot. All were in the $130-140 price range. I found a different Wen that looks to be a knock off of a Grizzly that has a 2.8 amp motor and a fence for the table among the other accessories so I ordered one from Walmart.com on sale for $124. It has great reviews as do all the Wen tools. I’d never heard much about them but they seem to have a good following and great reviews so I figured I’d try this one out. I’m not trying to resaw logs or anything(yet) so it should work fine for my needs. I’ll post some pics and my thoughts once I get it this week and test it out!

I also ended up staining the top I’d cut for the drill press area. Made a new base for it with some heavier duty casters. Loving the look of these stained tops.

Oh I also wanted to show this cool piece of rubber I found at Lowe’s. It’s a stair tread, they had one left on clearance for $10 and change. I took it to the flooring counter and asked if they’d come down on the price at all to get rid of it. They guy said how about $5 even, I said sold! It’s really thick and I figured it’d be cool for a workbench around a vice or grinder. It’s super tough and has slots diagonally.
