Very nice. Thanks for the updates, yours is one of my favorite builds.

I can't quite tell from the first pic on your update--how did the carport in the back turn out?
Moody,
The carport is still a frame, I need to clean & paint it before the roof goes on.

d110 - love the ceiling look ! - they pick up the socket system pieces really well. Reminds me of a a hotel we stayed in Sri Lanka a few years ago called The Tea Factory....lots of corrugated there, too.

...my sister lives in Canton - next time I'm over maybe I can see your handywork - but I'll be avoiding the summer months ! - way too hot for me !
Be sure to drop me an email when you're here next, I'd be happy to have you.
The grading company I used is owned by a couple that are Irish immigrants, really nice folks.

Looking good, Mike... I know how that finish work goes...

Where did you find these lights? I like them and have been looking for some inexpensive options for our place...

Herb,
I got those at local lighting store (now closed) but they are made by ANP Lighting http://www.anplighting.com/home .
At the time they were'nt an inexpensive light but they were exactly what I wanted. There is a company that sponsors this board that has similar lights (Barn lighting?).

Affordable Quality Lighting (affordablequalitylighting.com) has just released a new and improved version of their Gooseneck / RLM style light. They're now $100 each, and must be ordered in quantities of two's due to how they're packaged. I'm going to be calling them today and ordering a pair for myself, so we'll see how they work out!

That looks like a nice light. I'll suggest that you use the electrical box that comes with a brace welded to it. It's made to be mounted to a stud through the angle. The lights aren't very heavy but when you hang the weight 20" away a normal box won't hold. I can't find a link or photo, sorry.

Thanks for the suggestion - I've been wondering how the light would be supported at the box.

Unreal shop i love the coragated ceilings the think i was wondering is: I know that coragated does reflect a little light but do you think that the grey absorbs alot too I am debating about maybe putting up a relective ceiling cover in my shop but i heard semi gloss white will reflect just as much!! Any Ideas??

DIY,
I don't think the tin absorbs any light. True it's gray in color but it is very reflective. If you already have a ceiling, painting it will probably help and I'm sure it'll cost less.

I am curious about the interior lights. They look very bright. I am interested in how you hung them and what you used to hang them with. Also their spacing. Are you happy with it and if so what the spacing? I am planning my garage and I am worried about the prewiring for the proper amounts of lights.

Thanks,

Neil

Etek,
I currently work out of my basement (about 2500 SF) but I won't use the plasma cutter or welder inside, and I try not to grind inside.
My plan is to move all nasty (grinding/cutting) and flammable (welding/plasma torch) work into the shop building. I've also installed a lift as you can see. My goal is to not store anything in building except current projects and maybe consumables. The basement shop will be used for clean work and storage.
I'll continue to post photos as the shop is populated.

Neil,
The lights are T5-HO florescent fixtures; and yes they are very bright! These are made by Simkar and are 6 tube fixtures. They are classed as high-bay fixtures and should be mounted above 12', mine are just over 13' high. The building is 40' long, the end fixtures are about 10' from the walls and the one in the center is centered. Most of the manufacturers will help you figure out spacing and some have on-line calculators.
I will warn you that these are pricey; but I do love them. Also they are energy efficient and the tubes last much longer than T8 tubes.
If you have more questions let me know,
Mike

It's way past time for an update but I haven't done much to the building since the first of December. It's either too cold to wash and paint the carport frame or it's warm and raining. OK that's enough *****'n for now; here's some snow photos from this morning and a few others from last fall.
Thanks for looking,
Mike

Mike, I just read the whole thread.
Man, what a build, and I love the fact that it is not a quick 6 week project.

I can only dream of having suce a space..... I am working at trying to sell my current house, which goes in the market in about 3 weeks, and then buying a place with a 30x30 foot garage.

Your whole build is an inspiration.

Wow. I really enjoyed reading that!

A couple of years ago (I was 25), I blew an engine in the winter. It was my daily driver, but I already had a spare ready to go. The problem was I had to swap it in -20 C (-4 F) and my then new to me garage was only half insulated. It was difficult turning fastners with numb hands! The point is that I finally (after kitchen reno, painting, etc) got around to insulating the garage last summer and it's so awesome. I can only imagine how sweet it must be to get where you are! I've got big dreams like everyone else here, but realize it'll probably take a while.

My favorite thing about this site is seeing people make their dreams reality, and for a younger guy like me, it's really inspirational. So congrats and thanks for sharing it with the world!

I got a lot done on the shop this weekend; it was nice to have weather that was warm enough and dry enough to paint.
No photos of the painting but I do have a couple of the sign my wife gave me for Christmas back in 2007. I got the actual sign mounted to the aluminum tread-plate a couple of weeks ago and got it put up on Saturday. One of her clients is a sign maker and did this for her. The black part is laser cut from 5/16 aluminum plate and anodized black.

Beautiful garage. Absolutely stunning! Congrats.

Now, let's see some more pics of that Defender 110. I think her tailgate was in a pic in one of the first pages. I love the Rangie, but have always had a soft spot for Series/Defenders.

I just read this whole thread in one sitting. Wonderful garage. Truly inspiring. Most of us here can only aspire to have something so beautiful. Makes me want to go buy some land to be able to build a garage so large.

Looks GREAT Mike! If you don't mind my asking, where did you find the place to do the sign, are they local?

Herb,
My wife is a CPA and has three or four clients that are in the sign business and I don't remember which one made the sign. I do know they're in the Atlanta area and I'll find out and get the info to you.

Thanks to everyone else for the kind words. I'm trying to complete the small stuff and call it done!

Bo,
Again thanks for the compliments they certainly keep me going!

And here's a shot of the 110 Defender you saw on the thread. It's a 1990 model and the original owner was the British Army. It's LHD because it was used in Germany.

I think your garage is awesome. After building it, are you happy that you chose the Socket System/Lumber Link to build your shop. Was it more difficult than you had anticipated?

I have my own sawmill and was researching post and beam buildings and found socketsys.com and this website. I am impressed with many of the garages on this forum. I would like to cut my own wood and build a shop for myself. That system looks like it would be easier for me than stick built. Thanks for the cool pictures.

Crazy,
I'm happy that I chose that method but I'm not sure I'd do it again.
I'm sure I spent more money than an identical size stick built structure with a ceiling tall enough to accommodate the lift. That said I love the way it looks.
You may have more building experience than me and know ways to get around some of the problems I encountered.
