I would recommend buying one on ebay. Search on "antique vintage small wooden box with sliding lid". Guarantee several will be available. More authentic and convincing, in my opinion. I've done it. I've bought a miscellaneous "antique" wrench set before and discarded the stuff for the box, too. Just a suggestion.

Decided to make a box out of the remains of several old cigar boxes. Not exactly historically accurate but not trying to fool anyone! Threw in some period correct fsp ignition pliers and some chicago blue points wrenches just to fill it out.

Decided to make a box out of the remains of several old cigar boxes. Not exactly historically accurate but not trying to fool anyone! Threw in some period correct fsp ignition pliers and some chicago blue points wrenches just to fill it out.

That looks pretty good! Only thing I would possibly recommend is to age the box and decal with the lugz techniques described in his barn find thread. In my opinion that would make it totally believable!

For less than $10, there was no way this Wright midget set wasn't going to come home with me today. Looks like a full compliment of sockets. Probably missing the ratchet. But it does have an unbent pin handle!

I picked up this old Snap-On TM-4-E spinner handle the other day. I paid way too much for it, but oh well. I had never seen one in person before. It was in great shape, and I just kinda had to get it. Y'all know how it is.

Mfg., Inc. of Long Island City, N.Y., except maybe Oxwall, but something about this set, picked up at the flea market this morning, appealed to me. Metal case, plastic see-through sliding lid with a little thumb notch, and it's complete. Cheap. But iconic.

This little blue box was calling me. Perhaps because I don’t see much Gray socketry. I already have another assortment of later 1/4” Gray tools in an orange box that I once lucked upon as part of a massive Gray haul. I don’t think I ever posted them in this thread. Anyhow, here is the new addition. I’m not sure if everything belongs or not, and it’s likely missing pieces.

It has some of the Bonney characteristics, and even some Bonney.

I will certainly be on the lookout in my travels for things to fit in here, especially extensions.

Kind of neat to see three different steel boxes with three different logos from three different eras. Plomb, Williams, etc, almost commonplace we're so used to it. The Gray progression not so much.

Can someone shed some light on this and its origin?

The small wooden box contains 7 sockets, 0-BA to 6-BA, and the "L".

The lid reads:
"SPEETOL"
REGD TRADE MARK
B.A Socket Set.

That's a wonderful little wrench set, Targa! I've never seen the set or the name "SPEETOL" before, but the "B.A." on the box lid and on the sockets followed by a numerical designation almost certainly refers to "British Association" bolt sizes. It was a British imperial fastener standard adopted around the turn of the century before last (i.e., 1900), as opposed to Whitworth, or the later British Standard Whitworth, or British Standard Fine.

EDIT: All the references to "SPEETOL" I found online are wrenches, ratchets, screwdrivers, mandrels, jigs and such in machinery and hardware magazines published in England.

Hey, I have one of those Speetol sets! I have never posted it as it is missing the L wrench and the 2BA socket, but I could not resist the wood box.

And yes, the BA designation refers to British Association, which is not quite Whitworth derived as it has a 60* thread pitch, but the 1BA corresponds to the 1/8 Whitworth.

BA fasteners are typically small in size (under 1/4") and commonly found in applications such as threaded posts and nuts for automotive electrical connections and instruments. My BSA bikes which run up to 1968 use them. As noted by bmwrd0, they utilize a 60 degree included angle thread pitch as opposed to Whitworth which is 55 degrees.

That is coming right along. I recently got tired of looking at the aged felt the original owner put in my set and replaced it with cork liner. The disintegrated spinner left a small rusty area. I’m waiting for one socket from Texas to add to the set. Merry Christmas everybody!

Free* vintage ratchet for collector

UPDATE: THE RATCHET HAS BEEN AWARDED TO A COLLECTOR.

While recently cleaning my basement I found a vintage International Forge 1/4-in. ratchet that had belonged to my father Tat, a lifelong mechanic. Tat operated service stations beginning in the 1950s, and I suspect this ratchet belongs to that decade. *I am willing to give this ratchet to the first interested collector who is willing to repay my postage cost. The ratchet itself is very small, and the postage cost will correspond. I will mail the ratchet on the honor system. I will pay the postage for the ratchet, and I contact the collector with the cost. I will trust the collector to mail me a check for my postage.

The ratchet in question is the smaller ratchet in the attached photo.
