I'd go for a Ideal or Klein conventional. I kept trying to get the self adjusting or auto strippers because I HATED using the conventional ones. It turns out that was because I always used cheapo ones. I got these guys: http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRIT?PMAKA=505-0465 and man are they nice to use. Cheap too when you get them with a 20-30% Enco code that comes up every month or so.

Thanks :)
This is something not worth getting cheap with, haha :D
I have prime membership through Amazon and could definitely get these Wire Strippers sooner than later. Klein Tools appear to be good too as you suggested.

I don't know how Amazon manages to sell Irwin Tools like cake.

The manual strippers you have been recommended so far are great, work so much better than the junk ones that come in those cheap terminal and tool kits you get at cheap tool sales.

However, the best is these automatic strippers. Ideal makes them, they're rebranded by others also.

Thanks, I'm in need of a good wire stripper for electrical and audio / video cabling needs. Ideal is available on Amazon for ~$30.

Are the ones that come with a Wire Crimper gimmicky?

These are my two go to stripers. An ideal stripmaster and a blue point branded inline striped. Between these two, 99% of my needs are covered. I have couple standard style, mostly Klein, but they rarely get used. The blue point one is handy in tight spots like under dashes. Being one size fits all, it isn't always the best on really small wires. Stripers are one thing I don't think you can have enough varites of. Take that anyway your dirty little mind games it.

I have the same two strippers in my toolbox plus a manual pair from snap on. I find I grab the auto inline strippers 9 times out of 10. Only using the others for heavier gauge wire that the in lines may have trouble stripping.

These are my favorites. Yellow handle for solid conductor wire, red for stranded wire.

Should I go for a Self Adjusting type or the conventional type?

There are good and bad versions of both types. I strip and solder 1000's of wires every year, and I tend to like the self adjusting strippers in production. Especially the simple ones that allow me to strip multiple wires at once, as opposed to the Ideal type strppers that only strip one wire at a time. They all break their springs if you use them long enough, so I buy readily available strippers that I can return under warranty. The GB strippers are good and cheap.

How are the wire strippers that have a wider gauge range? (i.e. 10-30AWG)
Are there any decent wire strippers that have a built crimping mechanism?

I remember a couple of manufacturers that used to market a wire stripper (back in the mid '90's) on Paid Programming, but don't the recall the variant, probably didn't work well.

I like the snap on pwcs7 or Otc style the best

But the mini 3 piece set works great in tight situations

I had one like those, Made in Taiwan, but the markings had faded off over the years, and required more force from my end.

I received the Irwin Wire Stripper yesterday from Amazon. I'm not sure what the craze on Amazon's reviews are all about (did they get paid to promote the product? Back of the tool discloses patents from China, Taiwan, USA, and Germany); the tool feels cheaply made and has a very lackluster mechanism. I have to literally push from the top to get the wire insulation off. I went ahead and purchased the Ideal instead (10 - 30 AWG).

I'll compare the Ideal to the Channellocks and go from there. Both wire strippers could potentially be keepers here.

I use these, they are slightly longer more leverage , identical to the Channellock 908 http://www.sears.com/craftsman-electricians-tool/p-00982563000P?prdNo=5&blockNo=5&blockType=G5

Why is there a discrepancy on the product description between the Ideal 45-092 and Ideal 45-292? Are they both the same? (10 - 22 AWG)

Amazon Description not Accurate, again. (Not 10-32 AWG)

I'd say the Blue Point/Ideal strippers for 18-22 awg. The manual ones have their place, but I couldnt imagine being an electrician without the automatic ones. Dont be cheap when buying a pair, you get what you pay for.

I received my Ideal StripMaster today. This wire stripper is awesome, exactly what I needed. I returned the Irwin for this. I also have the $10 Channellocks. Should I return the Channellocks or keep both the Strip Master and Channellocks?

The Stripmaster is a simple and versatile tool, no doubt.
Instead of getting the pwcs7, I purchased Channellock 909 Crimping Tool with Cutter. :)

Let us know how the Channelocks do for you. I probably would have gotten the Ideal 30-429 if I were in your position.

I've decided to keep both. The Channellocks are the same as the Klein Tools; all probably made in the same factory.

Have never seen an automatic set that i actual liked. I'm sure there are good ones out there but when a 15 dollar set does a great job..... Not going to go spend more on something i see as being overly complicated..

The nice feature with strippers like the stripmaster is the insulation can be separated, then by using a pick to separate the strands of wire a hole is made and another piece of wire is then inserted and twisted into the picked hole. Makes for a very good connection without any silly t-tap looking thing. Finish up with solder or in a pinch tape and go.

Is this Stripmaster the same type of mechanism as on the Klein Katapults? I'm shooting for a 6-16ish AWG stranded wire, stripping in the middle without cutting using that technique you described.

I believe the Stripmaster and Katapults are the same. However, according to Amazon, the Katapults are Made in China
