My wife bought me an 8" 3/4hp Dewalt bench grinder for my shop for xmas this weekend, so I spent the evening cleaning up the benches from my last projects and the accumulation that seems to grow over the days of shop use. My son and I unpackaged it, setup the rests and the shields and powered it up on the bench. Spun it up to operating speed, then shut it down. My son grabbed a scrap piece of steel and turned it back on and as it was speeding up, it lets out a loud pop and starts smoking.

Needless to say, I'm not a very happy camper with Dewalt at the moment. Guess I'm taking it back to Tulsa weds when I head back to the office.

Sorry for your misfortune. I haven't bought any DeWalt stuff since B&D got into their game...

You let the majic smoke out. It needs that to run.

just kidding around, looks like you will be returning it. Pretty much your only option.

At least it looks nice. Hope it was just a bad luck of the draw. Dewalt usually makes some pretty good stuff.

Hard to find American made stuff anymore. Went to 3 stores looking for one and made a bunch of calls after that to find someone in Tulsa that even had an 8" 3/4hp bench grinder in stock.

I've got quite a bit of dewalt tools that I've abused the hell out of over the years, it's getting hard to get quality tools that will last.

Yes, i'm returning it back to the store, not sure if I'm going to get another one, they only had the display unit left in the store when I bought this one.

Where my dad works, he said he thought they carried some good quality ones, I'd have gone there if I new they had them. I'll check to see what they have there tomorrow, he thinks they have Dayton bench grinders

I've slowed down on buying Craftsman tools, just not been impressed with the quality here lately. Most of my hand tools and socket sets are all Craftsman, my power tools mostly dewalt with a few craftsman and a set of craftsman 20v cordless that I have 2 broken drills and a broken stapler that have died. Granted one drill fell 12' from the scaffolding to the concrete floor. The other one only works part time in low.

This thread is just another reason not to buy a Black & Decker product, (now Stanley Black & Decker) & they own DeWalt. Buy a Baldor or older non-Asian sourced grinder, I have a couple Rockwell 7" grinders, & 3 Baldor grinders, & 1 JC Penney branded Baldor all made in the USA.

+1 that an old school Baldor would be much better than "new" DeWalt. Also an older Dayton grinder would be lifetime purchase.

For Craftsman, the very first grinder in the Block Thread is pretty sweet as it's authentic 1 HP and 8" grinder.

I'd recommend USA wide CL/Ebay search of old school American made grinder, even if you had to pay shipping to get it back to you! ;)

Just return it. They have short term warranties for the ones that don't survive startup.

Maybe the Chinese make them on Mondays and Fridays.
