Your collection of tools and fab stuff is astounding. You have a very well thought out shop, keep it up!

love it. keep up the awesome work, can't wait to see more!

Do you ever find yourself consumed by making the tools and equipment you want/need for the original projects MORE than the original projects?? I can't tell you how much I've derailed myself from a few of my motorcycles because I wanted to re-organize some tools, or build a new welding table, etc...

I thought that was the whole point of having a workshop. ;)

This year has been largely spent building up the infrastructure itself, but I'm planning on spending more time over the holiday on end-projects. There's always a mix between the two.

have you used it much yet? i actually have a torchmate system that i only use for routering, and while it works its not great. to much flex in the z axis and just really made for plasma cutting. not sure they should be selling it as a machine to router.

now looking at this system as it seems much more robust.

Another "odd" tool arrived yesterday:

This is a filament extruder. This way I can mix up my own colors for the 3D printer and save some money at the same time.

One of the christmas presents I'm making is a "smart" talking figure. I'm going to embed an Arduino card with MP3 shield and accelerometer inside a plastic figure. Whenever you move it (or at random times) it'll say pre-recorded phrases. I'm test-printing the figure now:

Care to guess what it is?

On a non-garage related note, I found a very unusual outdoor heater for keeping the plants warm in our courtyard. It is very steampunk:

Here's what the finished model looks like:

The one I'm going to make with the electronics will have to be about twice this size for the boards to fit.

Do you need to sand the edges? Or is body filler needed?

Eric

The easiest way to smooth out the surface is to use an Acetone vapor; I haven't set up the tools for that yet. I'm also working on a new 3D printhead design that should also produce a smoother texture directly.

Pretty slick. Is it your model or one from the Internet? I am trying to do more 3d with my CNC, but my skills are lacking.

I love the heater, and I really dig the minion. But blue is not a minion colour! Will you make your bigger-scaled yellow?

More welding today

I could really get into this welding thing! Today I started welding up a stand for the 3D printer. My welds are slowly getting better, and I'm getting much faster with the whole process. Cleaning up the metal with a good flap disk first definitely helps:

My workbench definitely looks a bit mad-scientist-y today:

I used the 3D printer today to make a present for my son. I combined an Arduino with an MP3 shield and accelerometer to make a talking Minion that reacts to motion:

I also set up the printer on the stand. Works pretty well:

I will be making a cover and drawers for the stand after the holidays.

Happy Holidays!

I noticed you have a "cold" cut-off saw, but I couldn't make out the brand. Planning on getting one after years of using an abrasive cut-off saw, but am tired of the noise and sparks. Would like your thoughts on yours. Thanks.

I have the Northern Tool cutoff saw:

I highly recommend it. It's (very) noisy, but produces a clean, fast cut. You'll have to line things up carefully to produce accurate non-90 degree cuts, but it can be done.

More welding!

Finished the welding for the grinder stand this weekend. It feels good to finally have the tools in the correct place:

Seeing your stand reminds me....Where did you get your Variable Speed Grinder? I have been thinking about buying a cheap fixed speed one and adapting a rheostat to it, but reality says there are many more pressing jobs than that.....may just buy one done. Really nice setup you have. My daughter would like one of your Minions--I sense that it would be a bit above her allowance level....

The grinder is from Beaumont Metal Works. I custom ordered it with a 2HP motor and the variable speed controller option:

FYI the Minion is actually fairly inexpensive. It uses a standard Arduino UNO, MP3 shield, and cheap accelerometer. With a bit of digging you can get all of those combined for about $50. And the plastic is a couple of bucks. Once I clean up the 3D model a bit I can build them pretty easily, if you're interested. I'm planning on making another one for myself.

What does the Minion do?

Right now I've set it up to react to motion by making different sounds (up/down, left right, shaking it, etc.). I've thought about adding secret buttons on it too. And I've even considered putting sensors in the eyes to react to light & surroundings.

One other improvement is a slightly better model for the Minion itself. I've found a great one, but I've had some issue printing it. I'm going to try printing it using a different slicer software tonight.

Great shop. I love the commercial end doors and the exterior finish. The tool collection is awesome too. I've been a fan of Tormach and a plasma cutter is on my list. The welding bench is one I hadn't seen.

Cable organization

I wanted to have a better system for organizing cables on my workbench that still retains accessibility. I decided to put a 2" cable tray right above the power supplies. This keeps everything easy to rearrange.

I like to think of myself as "functionally ****-retentive" ;-)
