I have been thinking of building a shop here at my house for 20 years!
I finally realized I'm not going to get younger or richer- so I made the move..

24x40 with a 10x40 shed roof and pad along the L side.
12' ceiling height, 1 mid rise lift and 1 full 2 post lift.
Electric heat, 2? 5000 watt units.
18x8 single door in front- town regulations limit me to 3 total garage doors...
8x8 wooden door on back L side.
full second floor, mostly for storage now...

I do not understand why you have concreted the strip in front of the main gate. WHy not the whole area?

That strip is going to be under the poured floor and is extra "form" work to add support for the center posts....

Framing was a "little held up" last week by weather...
Rain storms early, then very hot.
The crew expects to be done Tuesday...
All windows, man door, big garage door and 8' X 7' wide double door ordered and set to arrive within 2-3 weeks.
Cupola and weathervane ordered, here within 2 weeks.
Plan is to finish framing, do final site work this week.
Hopefully next week get the floor poured as well as the deck and entrance.
The original plan was to have the building useable by July 4th...
Might just make it!

Garage is looking good and the cars look GREAT! A good friend of mine is a bit of a Saab fanatic, so many of the cars you have are familiar to me, the Sonett is particularly awesome.

Which part of MA are you in? I'm out in Central Mass down near the CT border. Good to see another local build! Keep up the good work!

I probably know your friend...The SAAB community, especially the vintage SAAB community- is a small one...

I have a few more SAAB's of various ages, and am constantly getting new "project" cars to play with...

I hope to add a 1955 Ford pick up soon- as the "shop truck"...

I'm in the Blackstone Valley area of MA, so pretty close!

I'm in Sturbridge.

Electric heat? I have a 220 unit set to keep the attached garage (24x32) at 45 degrees - it sure uses a lot of juice.

Yah, I expect it will be expensive.
Going that way for now, probably 2 5000 watt units downstairs.
The cost to heat with oil would probably be similar if not more expensive...
I can always add something else in the future as the budget allows.
I will probably only be using the heat when I'm in the shop, at least this winter anyway.
"Buy in" is the cheapest with electric, and replacement heating units are cheap.
I am also considering going with solar panels next year- one side of the roof is almost exactly facing due south...
Also low to no start up cost with the company's I've talked to about solar.

That Saabo is awesome! I've always liked Saabs. When I was in High School (late 80's), my girlfriend's brother had a 900 turbo, I think it was an "81/'82, that had over 130,000 miles on it. When he went off to college, I got to drive it for a whole year. Ran like a top and could not be killed. I loved that car. Oh, and you're garage is nice too :)

SaabGuy, Are some of those photos from Swedish Car Day? I've been to that show quite a few times, but I'm over on the other (Volvo) side. :)

Yes, Swedish Car Day.
I am involved every year as part of the group that presents it, I am often the "sign in " guy for field cars...
What are you bringing?

Making progress, but the rains have slowed us down.
Doesn't look good for pouring the main floor tomorrow...

The weather is slowing down my build also as the framer is delayed on his current job. Mine is next. The foundation and floor have been poured and covered for over a month now so it should be good and hard.

Here is a shot of the cabriolet I drove for a month in the UK back in 2005. It had 425 miles when I picked it up and turned it in w/ 2,250.

What a blast it was, loved to bury the boost gauge :)

Regards,

.

Ah ha! We've probably met before then. I normally bring my 1998 S70 T5 SE although the past 2 or so years I've driven my truck as the car has been in the shop for upgrades/repairs.

Wow! Congrats on the new garage Saab Guy! I love the design.

I'm seeing people from MA coming out of the word work too! It's nice to see some locals on here. I'm just south of Boston in Sharon, MA.

Looking great, very similar to my garage. Why so many posts down the middle though?

My garage is 24x40 with walk-up storage above and only 2 posts down the middle. I didn't build it, but if i were to do it again, I would make it a foot or two wider, and do away with the pesky columns.

My garage is 24x40 with walk-up storage above and only 2 posts down the middle. I didn't build it, but if i were to do it again, I would make it a foot or two wider, and do away with the pesky columns.

Main reason for all the columns is because I didn't want to have an issue or limit to the amount of weight that could be upstairs...

I don't know what my future use will be for the upstairs area, but short term it will be home to a lot of parts- heavy stuff including engines and transmissions.

So- I could have gone with 2, but then potentially had issues if I overloaded the upper deck.

I thought about it alot, and the whole building has a lot of compromises, as I am not very wealthy and need to stay within a certain budget to get the function I want.

If I had the $-no columns downstairs and at least a 40x60 building...

I was told to put plastic sheeting over the concrete floor and water it twice a day for a month. This is how it is done in commercial shops and helps it slow cure which builds the strength up even more.

It must me nice to see it take shape.

.

Beautiful Job!! Please show more pics closer up if you can of the board and batten siding. I like the bottom wrap around too. Are you using pine for that?

Thanks,
Ed

I'll have to dig up some photos of my shop for you, nearly identical layout.

The SAAB signs are EXCELLENT!
