I should probably not worry about another thread, I'll just post here.

The beginning of a Slow Speed Attachment for a drill press. That's a 3" round bar of 6061, 5/8" shaft rod, two 602 bearings(I went with those because I had them on the shelf, they either fit block grinders or power tool motors so I had a bunch already and they are common) and snap rings, not shown are the grub screws.
img_2345.jpg

I chucked it in the lathe and faced it, keep in mind this is my first lathe operation in forever and just jumped in instead of refreshing my angles of attack etc. When I got chatter I would adjust it until it got less chatter. :lol_hitti
img_2346.jpg

After facing, I cut it down to size to fit snugly inside the drill press column about 1-3/4"ish. My precision measuring tool for this part job was a measuring tape. :)
img_2344.jpg

The next step required some math. I had to offset drill the shaft to allow belt tightening, I measured the bearing OD and figured how much space I wanted between it and the edge of the slug. I used a center drill to mark and measure again to be sure before drilling through. I progressed bit sizes from small to a bit bigger than the 5/8 shaft, idk what size but it works. Finally I tried like 10 different ways to cut that bearing relief in there before finding that boring bar setup. Took me about an hour to get it done, the other one took about 10 minutes. The right tool means everything.

The bearing is a nice tight fit but I will drill/tap for grub screws to lock them in.

Took me a minute to figure out a decent angle to grind on the planer blade I used for a cutoff tool, then it took me a while to cut through this log. My front to rear feed gear needs replacing so I had to stand there cranking it.

This concludes part one, if you would like to see more, please send a SASE to p.o. box...

Thanks guys, btw, I went with RSwannabe's design from page 12 of the "Craftsman Drill Press" thread. I made a few changes, he used D bar where I used 5/8 shaft rod, I will grind a flat for the pulley and collar screws. Also, he went with a collar on top and bottom then realized the top collar was in the way of lining up the pulleys so he's using the top pulley to hold the shaft with a collar on the bottom. I will be cutting a groove for snap rings to hold the shaft and if needed use a collar below for back up.

This is the first major thing I have ever made on a lathe Strouty. I bought this to learn with and have not used it but a handful of times, feels good, you should try it.

Very nice work there Nine's, I really need to get a lathe but Mrs. Thumper has put a hold on any new big purchases until Aug.

Looking forward to the rest of this build.

Nice work nine's!

Thumper, at least you are not using one because you don't have one. I have three and have never used any of them because they, themselves are all projects to be cleaned up and set up.

That awesome nines. Is that your first project?

Someday I'll have a lathe. I was offered one for free years ago. The guy said he'd give it to me, I just had to move it. The thing would handle a 6' stock. I had never seen anything that huge before. I'm guessing it weighed over 3 tons.:dunno: At the time I had no place to move it to so it didn't happen.

Good job! Next time instead of parting off, if you have a saw that will cut the material, score a line around the part, then saw off leaving excess to face back to the line. It saves a lot of hassle, and I do this daily as routine. Curious, how did you insure the second bearing bore was aligned to the first?

Looking good Nines. It's getting scary about all this being in each other's head talk:scared:
Being that I'm in the bought a lathe and will learn how to use it club, can you please tell my dumb *** how you bored the recess for the bearing being its offset to center?
Did you chuck it up off center?
Thanks

Maybe I will, someday.

Don't be sad, you're getting there and your shop is looking nice!

That's plenty of time to find a good deal. Also, when my girl tells me something like that and I find something I want before then, I get it and then just ask for an extension. :lol_hitti

First major project Dan, I've made a handful of trinkets on here but nothing like this with all the processes on one object. Like I've bored a piece of plate before and drilled tapped various things, cut rod down to size etc but it was all different projects. This has all the elements on one thing so I have to be careful with each step not to ruin it and also have to make sure I have a plant to execute them in the right order. I had to put on my thinking cap.

OccupantRJ, stay out of my head, thanks! I swear that is exactly what I told my girl when I got done and sat down to admire my work. It immediately hit me.
The way I aligned the second hole was to drill a 4.5" deep hole through for the shaft first, then bore the first bottom bearing seat, part the piece off. Next I flipped the part around and slid it on the tail stock drill bit and used the tail stock to line the part back up in the chuck, the drill bit acts as a centering shaft, like a clutch alignment tool. When I had the part chucked back up on center I just bored the second bearing hole. Easy to do, hard to explain, let me know if you understand my babble.

The lathe is my favorite machine tool. It's mesmerizing.

Good work there 9's.

You've made me angry at myself. I have 3 South Bend lathes that all need rehabbing and setting up.

Bill

Don't be angry, get even or one, two or three up me!

Yes, I have a 4 jaw chuck so I faced it and sized it on center, then offset it to drill the shaft hole and bore it, then back to center to part it off and file the edges.

looks nice nine.

Thanks Richard!

Great start Nine!

Thanks Outlaw! We're about to head out to the daughter's new apartment for a bit and then I'll be back to finish it so you'll see part deaux tonight.

Nine, I'm hiding behind your brain's logic center poking with a sharp object. I figured you did the second bearing alignment in a fashion similar to that. My method is whatever works with what you have! Again, nice job!

The continuation. I clamped the adapter into my angle clamper and set it to 45* for the 3/8x16 grub screw that locks the adapter in position in the pole. I used a center drill to mark location, then drilled and tapped for this and the two grub screws that lock the bearings in.

I can record a video on my phone but from there I have no clue how to get it posted here. You can pm me your phone number and I can text it to you or someone explain how I can upload a video. I made a video of it running with just a link belt from the motor to center pulley for Merc(the one getting the drill press), need to pick up two cogged style v-belts for it.

Good question Strouty, I will have to find the chart and get back with you. It's the same as a Craftsman or close to it.

Badass Nine!

But I still don't believe that you'll give it to me...

Any clue as to what size belts are needed for this and yours? I can pick them all up if you can measure.

Pretty cool Nines. I'm also messing around with youtube so I can upload videos to the GJ. Maybe we'll both figure it out. But for now, using youtube works for me.

And what's with all the **** videos linked to your page?????:dunno::willy_nil

Wait, did I post the wrong link?

Should be just lathe and drill press video but I can see where youtube may confuse the term DP video. :willy_nil

I'll have to see what happened with the code there when I get to my better computer later. This one has too much **** on it and it...well, never mind.

New SciFy network series starring yours truly. Comes on at 11pm Central, right after Sharknados, before Gatornados :lol_hitti

Nines, no worry, no DP videos, just f%4cking with you. What ,you don't know me by now.:D

:whew:

They say you are not done until you bleed on it but I have found that untrue, every time I bleed on it I still have a lot to do...

I've had a lot going on as a matter of fact, but unfortunately, nothing GJ worthy. So I've been lurking a bit in the early mornings before work and nights before I go to bed.
