Hmm, hard to diagnose what you're doing wrong over the net. Let me go take some pics real quick on setting it up. Keep in mind to. if they are used bits that you bought at a garage sale, they may have been sharpened at some odd angle before and the DD is trying to correct the angle. Stand by....

One thing i found, the grinding wheel was 1/2-3/4" too far out. The tip of the drill bit was not getting touched by the wheel, that's why i couldn't get it to grind right. I took the screws loose then pressed the wheel back in to place with the handle of the screwdriver and its lined up now.

I only have a Drill Doctor 250, and I found that it works quite well. I second the suggestion that you sharpen a bunch at the same time. And of course the grinding wheel does wear out so the sharpening process doesn't work.

So in my spare time this week I have been working on restoring the Craftsman Belt/Disc sander. I am headed to the store for paint right now so the next time you see it, it will be done.

GirlnAgarage, do yiu use a Drill Doctor? I have the 750 I think but only messed with it a couple minutes before putting it away. Can you tell us how you like it?

Thanks for stopping in guys (and gals), y'all are awesome!

I have the 350x. As far as I can tell, it does it's job. I need to spend more time with it. There may be a bit of skill involved to get a good point. But like I said, need to spend a little more time. It's been a while since I broke it out.

I've run all my used bits through it and I've touched them up when I was using them to drill metal, especially building my workbench. I was pleased with the results, I was able to drill holes with what I had.

Well, 432,376 miles later and I still don't have any paint. I stopped at Oreilly's, Advance, Dollar Store, Dirt Cheap, Eds Hardware, Vernons Hardware, Sherwin Williams, National Coating Supplies, Home Depot, Walmart, AutoZone and a thrift store, there may have been more. Not a single can of light blue metallic or hammered light blue ANYWHERE. What ***** is I had a can in my hand a few weeks ago and can not remember what store we were in.

I hit the north side one today, I'll be over by the central one later this week but usually the north side has a better selection. They actually had several "new" colors in stock, I grabbed two cans of Rustoleum Sea Mist that just came out but they're for another project. WTF happened to just walking in a hardware store and grabbing a can of light blue metallic or hammered paint? Seriously, the only metallic I could find was Cobalt blue, I'm looking more for baby blue.

And I kind of like it. Still have to do the motor, motor mount and round up/fab a few missing pieces. The manual shows a tire on the top roller only on this model and mine was toast so I'm trying PlastiDip, I'll let you know how it works. I had to make a screw pin for the table bracket that was missing and now the table adjuster is smooth like butter. The table and platen flash rusted after cleanup but I'll take care of that shortly. Actually everything I cleaned up flash rusted so I worked twice on this thing but it's somewhat done and I'm satisfied. I used Marvel Mystery Oil for assembly lube and I like it, things went together smoothly, the only issue is it smells so good I want to lick it.

That blue looks pretty nice nines

I've been thinking about getting a DD to sharpen my bits. Any thoughts between the 500X (about $330AU) and the 750X (about $440AU) ? I probably only will need to do upto 1/2 inch bits.

Cheers GB.

Man nine4, you do some skilled work. I mean, I always knew that for a long time, but I love how you can thrown down a start to end project in no time and it still looks like you spent ages meticulously working on it.

The blue paint on the sander turned out great and the black base accents work with it well. Great work as usual. Had to laugh about wanting to give it a lick!
Following along all the Drill Doctor comments with great interest. I've wavered many times about buying one but as yet have not done that. I learned to sharpen bits the old school way from my dad and have not been able to yet make the change. But, as I get older this tool may be the better approach if it is reliable.

Honestly i dont think i like the drill doctor, maybe for the tiny bits but it seems more trouble than its worth so far.

Thanks for stopping in and all the kind words guys and gals!

I'm having flashbacks of why I opted not to change the bearings on the drill press motor when I restored it a few years back. The company has been out of business for over 30 years and the only new replacements available locally are $42 each plus $16 shipping. :shocking: I found some NOS on line but even those are about $20 each which is high for what normal motor bearings cost. Time to bite the bullet I guess.

We have a couple places that will measure the old ones and get you replacements without paying part number prices. Anything like that around you?

Yeah, these have no cross numbers other than the new company and two old companies. They don't make a Chinese knock-off in this particular size that I can find. The outside diameter is 35mm and the inside is 15mm, they are about 12mm thick but I think 10-15 would fit in this application. The old part number is New Departure 8502, the new number is MSC 8502.

Best of luck.

Well that one helped Strouty, it's a special 15mm ID 6202 that will work. Just my luck, I have a whole pile of 5/8" 6202 that are only a cooter hair off.

My storage problems should be over with as of this evening. I just picked up three uprights and four shelves worth of pallet racking for $100. I've been searching for this particular size for two years in May and finally found it listed as "Heavy Shelf Rack" in the general CL section. It had been listed over a month, if he had it listed as Pallet Racking or in the tools section, it would have sold first day.

Texting and driving is a no-no, but apparently taking your hands off the wheel so you can turn around and take a photograph is ok in Louisiana. :lol_hitti

I just finished painting the rest of my pallet racking. The end result was very much worth the effort!!

Major improvement Slodat! IDK if I will go through that trouble for this set, these are going on the machine wide with lots of rust, dust and grime. If I painted any, it would be the set in the upholstery side but last time I painted a set I said I would NEVER do that again...

Never know though, I have to finish up the wiring conduit and lighting so I can put them up first so I may get bored and paint them by then.

Last night I bounced around from playing motor doctor, part time painter and then shade tree electrician and now I'm trying to decide on whether or not to wear my plumbers hat and move the sink....

You only have to paint them once. As I go through each area of my shop and get it painted and dialed in I love the place more and more. It is a much more creative environment!!

I know, it's all I have been thinking about and yours look real nice. What paint did you use? I went with gloss black rustoleum on the last set I painted uprights and safety red on the beams, it matched my lathe table but it was only 24" deep so I sold it and got the 36" I've been having for a while now. I have to shorten the uprights 1-2' anyway to fit in here so I'll be taking my time I guess.

Nice score on the pallet rack! What height were the uprights? And I would not go through the trouble of painting mine LOL
