If some are these are blunders, I would love to see your excellent work. That all looked great no matter what.

You know life is funny, I told you I had some thing for you and got your address. I went out to the garage and could not find it. I came back into the house upset with my messy garage and sat down here at the computer. My screen saver is a picture of my garage. On the screen saver was the item that I was looking for, I went back out to the garage and sure enough there was the item. So now it is sitting here in the living room waiting for me to go to the post office to mail it to you...Richie

Where are those pictures you promised?

Thanks for the reminder Dan!

Here you go Bagged. First is one that come on the stand.

This one I made from muffler clamps and scrap steel to resemble one I saw in a Craftsman ad. It will get cleaned up and painted when I restore the belt sander above it.

I wish I could have done the band saw to match but seriously , that was a mistake and I don't want to even try to duplicate it. The motor was painted with the stand and came out just like it, everything else was painted separate. I keep saying it but I hope to get the table painted and the light RE-painted(another blunder, I put too much paint trying to lay it down smooth and it sagged some and wrinkled when drying).

Thanks for sharing. The muffler clamp setup is what I had in mind.

...Then I had to move some things around for it to fit so I paired up the machines while I was at it. Doubles, twins, whatever you wanna call it. I call it Craftsman Block with some beat up wire wheels that need replacing and a Craftsman 6x48 belt 9" disc sander, Baldor 2x48 belt sander and 6" buffer, Delta 14"band saw and dual sharpening center with a Rockwell miter below it. There are even two Craftsman boxes at the end of all that. Now if I could just find another inexpensive Hey Budden anvil for the collection I'd be set...:willy_nil

question: now that you have had these grinders/etc. lined up like this for a year how do you like the arrangement? I've been thinking of mounting all of my grinders/buffers/wire wheels/etc. on one piece of channel iron so that they are all lined up and together. I would have to go out and count them, but I believe I've got about a dozen double ended pieces scattered around. do you find that you need to have the option to move them around to be able to use them or do you leave them lined up like in the pic?

They definitely need to be separate, I have rearranged them a few times but the main reason is being able to pull them out for access. Almost every time I use one I have to pull it out of the lineup or turn it sideways etc. if they were mounted on a bar, you would not have that option and would have limited access to the wire wheels and buffers. Just my opinion but individual stands are the only way to go.

Well... another option is a single stand like a B&D Workmate and have them mounted on mounting plates that the Workmate holds, and rack them when not in use. That's what I do generally. If I recall Nine doesn't like that option.

Actually I love that idea Outlaw, I just always forget that's an option. I sold my workmate before getting the idea from you and I'm still kicking my own *** over it. One shelf full of tools and one stand would have been a better option since I'm limited on space. There's no way I'd mount several tools on one rail though. Not a chance.

Btw, I also like your idea since you can put the tool plate in any vice around the shop for even more flexibility... Looking back I kind of wish I would have went that route but it's a lil late now, I'm very fond of the stands I've acquired over the years. I may use your idea for my additional grinders though since I'm out of floor space and still have several grinders on the shelf.

I've got a "modelers" smaller workmate that I've toyed with the idea of embedding into a bench, but that will have to wait for some future bench and/or workshop...

In the meantime, keep your eyes open; WM's come up fairly regularly... :ninja:

I would have to see it to remember it Dan but probably not for me . I like to have full access all around the tool. With the workmate and tool plates, you could grip it on one side or the other and have full access. Same with mounting the tool plate in a vise, full access. If you mount a grinder or buffer on a bench, usually the bench is wider than the tool and restricts access.

I can see what you're saying. I have all my tools mounted in separate places. But I am not limited for space. I don't like to feel cramped when I'm using my drill press or bench grinder.

Outlaw, what is a "modelers" work mate?

That's just my name for it. instead of being a floor stander, its is a bench or table top model. instead of using it on top of the bench, I would embed it and the top of the jaws would be flush with the top of the bench..

Look in the WM thread, Several have been shown

Thanks for the link! Yep that would work also.

With the WorkMate, what I did was to go to a standard width mounting plate and I have a two bay storage shelf I made that has adjustable shelf standards. So I can simply shelve the tool, be it bench grinder, chop saw, miter saw, what have you. This was so I didn't have to deal with the tool teetering on the cleat on the bottom of the mounting plate, or have to add spacer blocks to steady the tool on an ordinary shelf.

You can get as creative as you want height-wise, because of the adjustable shelf standards, and if you have sufficient narrow tools you can have different width bays, or setup an auxiliary vertical with more shelf standards for the narrow tools. The key is standardized widths of the mounting plates.

If I was to ever get the smaller WM embedded into a bench, I would need to standardize the bottom cleat for a maximum width, as that WM is a narrower unit. but that is easy.

Hey Outlaw it sounds like a great method using the shelf storage and Workmate table. How about a few pics of storage and in use. Because as you know well…………

RM, two of them in use are here: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4406335&postcount=150

The manual miter saw was mounted way before I came up with the shelf idea. the Miter shaver is "shelf mounted".

I've posted pics of the shelf unit before, but who knows where those are, and I cant practically get new ones at the moment as "Decorating for Xmas" has trashed that corner more than usual... essentially its three 1 X 12s vertically, 1X12s top and bottom, and a 1/4" ply back. The 1 X 12s were dado-ed for the shelf standards and voila! you have a shelving unit.

One side currently has bulk shop and garden supplies and chemicals, the other is mostly tools. I plan on redoing the garage organization adn filling this thing with mounted tools, and moving the supplies elsewhere.

Thanks Outlaw. It's a simple and good idea for limited space shops. I love the idea of having things on separate stands but currently don't have the space for them all so this might be a good solution. I love using my WM as well and this just gives it another useful chore to perform.

Thanks Thumper! I broke down today and pulled out a paint brush to paint the band saw table and lamp shade(again). I didn't get the smooth finish I was hoping for but it's done and drying so now I can move on with life. With this weather it'll probably be a couple days before it hardens enough to install, hopefully by next weekend I can actually use it.

Left to do on band saw:
Cut sheet metal plate for bottom of motor to hold capacitor in.
Make a switch box so I don't have to bend down to flip it on/off each time.
Wire the motor, lamp and switch.
Paint the table "degree" pointer red.
Install the table and lamp shade once cured.
Install a blade.
Scuff and paint the fence rail(it's not going to be green so I didn't paint it with the table today). Install once cured.
Buy a bulb for the lamp and install.
Cut something.

List comprised for Drives. :D

Thanks Don!

Yes Dan, I posted in the quarter million thread I think. She is running behind today but promised pics tomorrow and gave me her word she would not sell the one I specifically want out from under me.

Don't forget to let me know what else she has (as I'm sure you wouldn't), or what the "big" one is!

Also, one of these days you're going to have to follow through on your threat of "maybe I'll make it by tomorrow". xmas
