Nice. I'm getting "green" with envy. Looking forward to the finished product.

PS. I just crossed your state Sunday night from Houston to Mobile on I-10. Enjoyed the scenery until it got dark and all your old iron treasures are intact as I had no time to stop and hunt for tools. Maybe some other time I can poach a few treasures.

Thanks guys, I was in the xmas spirit for sure!

This week should be productive, I'm hoping to get the new old Delta drill press going along with the Atlas horizontal mill. Also, I have the Bridgeport motor off to bench test it and it is definitely half the impedance on one leg so I'll be trying to retrofit a 2hp motor Merc scored recently. The bearings will also be replaced and more than likely it'll get some paint too. :scared:

Stay tuned.

Thanks guys! I posted it on CL already but the price is high, I'd kinda like to keep it but only until I find a Delta. The racing stripe is factory on 80's(iirc) model Powermatic power tools, though this one is 60's or 70's model I gave it a newer look.

Here is the Delta drill press I just picked up recently. It's getting bearings, paint and a table since this one is damaged.

Thanks Kev, yes I will be making some changes to the shop for spring cleaning or sorts and wrapping up these loose projects will help out. Plus it's been nice out in the shop lately so I can really get things done.

I went ahead and swapped out the bearings on the Bridgeport motor while I had it apart and hooked up the new VFD. This time I set the parameters prior to starting it up and BAM!!! It works like a charm. I won't be moving forward with the 2hp conversion at this time but I will be changing the spindle/quill bearings and making a nice mount for the VFD.

I have been trying unsuccessfully to remove the spindle from the quill on the Bridgeport for the past two days. Today I went and bought two new lock nuts from the bearing supply place around the corner. When I got home I drilled a pilot hole through the old nut and hammer/punched them out. I was able to get them off and get the spindle out but now I am having problems getting the spindle bearing set out of the quill. Also the spindle balance spring is broken, anyone have one laying around? :lol_hitti

I sent the spindles out to a shop to have the bearings replaced. I've never tried to do them myself..

I always say, "you gotta be smarter than what you're working on" and this time I was not as smart as a chunk of steel. There is a built in shoulder sleeve inside the quill that requires the upper bearings to be knocked out from the bottom, and the bottom bearings to be knocked out from the top. Once I figured that out, it only took a minute to get the old bearings out. The N05 locknut could be tightened with a spanner wrench if it was accessible but it's down inside the quill so I had to make a tool to tighten the new nut. I planned to turn down some steel or aluminum, drill and insert 3/16" key stock at the right radius to create the socket but couldn't find a chunk of anything worth turning. In the search I did find a large nut and an old jack handle that had the perfect size/thickness steel for my use. I cut the knurled part of the jack handle off and welded it to the large nut, then I welded key stock in the key slots on the old nut and welded that to the other end of the jack handle. The tool works perfect, I can hand twist it with the knurled section and put a wrench or torque wrench on there if I want to get all rocket scientist on it. :rocker:

I should have the mill running VERY soon! :willy_nil

That pic was upside down, sorry. Anyone know where to get the quill balance spring for this m head? It's broke close to the inside, I think I'm going to try welding it tomorrow and see if it holds. It's not going to hurt to try it until I can find a replacement.

Latest blunder, I left out one of the #42 washers when putting it back together and now I gotta take it all the way back apart to put that washer in.

Looks like my workbench - way too familiar- haha. Just got done putting BP head back together. New bushing and bearings and cleaned everything up. Replaced a couple of parts but not bad condition overall. Tore the 2HP motor down and did bearings and painted the housing last evening.

Yours is looking good as usual. Saw the sander on CL - good luck with the sale.

One of these days I'll get my post started.

Jake, I usually have a few parts left over but when I only had one washer, I got nervous and pulled out the parts page to see what was up. Turns out I did only have one part left and it goes inside...

Charles, your mill is looking sweet,,, YOU SCORED on that 2hp beast!! :3gears:  Love the shifter handle too, I was eyeballing a Hurst t shift handle I picked up from a garage sale recently but I need to tweak my rod some first since it's bent. Did you ever sell the shaper?

Thanks for stopping in Cajun!

I worked on wiring schematics last night. There will be single phase 240v coming in, I'll need 120v for lights, relay and power supply, then I'll have 12v and 5v accessories as well plus the three phase power for the motor... I'm gonna need more crayons... :lol_hitti

Looks like the mill is coming along well and looking great, but as I told you earlier the mill for sale at the state auction tomorrow is even better. I'm pretty sure this is a Bridgeport Z head... :D

Shayne, i don't even run a balance spring on my J head Bridgeport at work, and haven't for 28 years. It was removed when I got there. I installed it once, but took it back off because I liked it better without for power tapping. What tolerance class of bearings did you get? Anything special?

Thanks Laser!

Occupant, the two pulley bearings were standard ebay items but the four spindle bearings were special ES rated bearings. If you don't know what ES bearings are, I'll save you some googling... They were estate sale NOS bearings I picked up recently and by chance they happen to be the same size(though not taper ground or matched set whatever) so they should be fine for the tinkering I do.

Craptain, that's a commercial mixer from the cafeteria, though I did crack up when Merc sent it to me earlier as a joke.

Any shape you want to Strouty. ;)

Charles, the sander is bait for a big fish here locally, I think you sold him a mill recently. :lol_hitti
