I have two pairs of them I have completely crushed stuck filters with them :spit:

The key with those pliers, is to grab the filter as close to the base as you can. That way you're grabbing the steel portion instead of thin sheet metal.

Channellock also makes a pair with offset handles.:thumbup:

My primary oil filter wrench is the end cap type. My fleet uses Wix made filters for the most part and you really only need two end cap style wrenches to fit 95% of our filters.

Agreed. Even with my Snap-on strap style I get the strap as close to the base as possible otherwise it will start to crush or deform he sheet metal.

I've got a bunch of stupid oil change tools

blue-point filter pliers - they are my go to, look like those tekton pliers
2 sizes of blue-point band wrenches - pretty basic nothing special
set of matco cartridge filter sockets - 24, 27, 29, 32, 35/36, 38mm

Cartridge filter housings should be standardized. The number of tools I have for changing oil is stupid

I do like the K&N filters with the nut on the bottom.

That's the only way to fly on a Harley big twin. The Ernst oil filter removal funnel is well worth the small investment, also. Anyone that has spilled the oil out of a Harley oil filter all over their motor mount due to their ****** engineering understands.

This is all I use. I hate the sockets, 2-3 jaw clamps and various strap/band style clamps. They either slip or I run out of arc before they get a tight enough grip. And you need a gazillion different sizes/variations.

These aren't too kind to the filter but I use them for removal only and hand tighten the new filter. They seem to fit all filter sizes.

Yeah I dug it too, I think the added rust on the chain helps as well :) As much as I like big *** ***** Gif's this made me repost so that should tell you its good :)

I doubt if many people know about it :dunno:

Facom/USAG have a very small presence in the USA despite being part of the Stanley empire.

I think that spring loaded would be great provided you had room to use it :beer:

I've got the HF knock-off. As purchased, the slip-joint was sloppy loose. Tossed the string wash, snugged the nut just right and mushroomed the bolt tip with a ball peen hammer so the nut wouldn't back off. Maybe your Tekton could use similar treatment?

Im not sure they ever really advertised it but MAC brands it. MACU48. Pricey but it is made in France. Or least it was.

Personally I prefer the filter cups but they have to be high quality (not stamped). Assenmacher makes good ones and I also got a KTC one last year for the small Honda filters that is well made.

The best I’ve used is the Facom u48 oil filter wrench. It has never failed me and is very easy to use. The only drawback is the space constraints sometimes.

My other favorites are the KTC oil filter cups, nicely made from aluminum alloy and no issues with fitment like the cheap versions out there. I also like the KTC claw tool for tough filters, it’s very compact and doesn’t slip.

Wow. I freaking love that. I'm a master at justifying tools, but even I can't figure out how to do it for a hundred bucks.

I still want it though...

But my wife's 2010 Corolla has an oil filter housing, so I still need a filter wrench for that--doh!

The assenmacher one is much nicer. Toyota went back to spin-on filters on their 4 cylinder engines starting in 2018 model years though. Not really sure why since the 6 and 8 cylinder engines are still the cartridge filter.

I bought a 64mm filter wrench via Autozone--some knockoff brand to use on my wife's Corolla. My problem: the filter wrench often gets stuck on the end of the filter housing. Arggh!

Do you guys have that problem, or is the problem my cheap filter wrench.

Tacked a weld on my red handle ones because they would slip and crush my fingers. The channel lock ones look pretty good. I got an oem brand band style wrench and it *****. Every oil filter wrench i have *****. Only had 1 that actually worked good and it was a composite filter socket from fram but that broke years ago

No, the assenmacher one is pretty good about getting stuck. Even if it does its designed like a skeleton so you just give the filter cap a tap.

Lisle 63600 and 63250 works everywhere it will fit the filter. Pliers or the band types don't work on any vehicle I've owned over 10 years

I was lucky and got the claw one for about $40 shipped from amazonJP. There’s an even nicer one from Facom, built super strong Made in France, and they offer 3 sizes. Price is about $50-$60 tho haha.

I have the KTC versions and have tried the assenmachet AST versions they are built much better so they don’t get stuck like that. They might be snug in there for a second but a push from the top hole gets it every time.

I use a no name pair like the Tektons posted earlier. Paid ~$5 for them at Advance Auto years ago. For my Town and Country, a 24mm socket to remove the cap to replace the cartridge filter.

the most unique one was on a Fiat 124 Spider. The only way off when tight was to punch a screw driver thru it and twist. I have an assortment of many styles of strap and end wrenches for filters. The take up a lot of room in the tool chest.

Another vote for the pliers type. Mine are the generic cheap ones but they replaced everything else.

If I were hunting again the better pliers type would be the short list.
Destructive they are, but as long as the filter is done anyway it doesn't matter.

This. Use both regularly, never failed. Must for my wife's new Mazda; can't get a strap around it. The only complaint I've seen against these is that you can't use them to tighten the filter, which you're not supposed to.
