Swartz's is defunct now, but very way cool place...I would love to live in this garage!!!!

The pumps were newer so it couldn't have been closed too long ago! The wife brought her grabber coupe too and had to pose...LOL!

Then, down the road, a cool greasy spoon!

This is a shot from the 1950s of my Dad's station in western Il. Left to right: Lewis (my Grandpa), Richard (my Uncle), a business partner whom I never knew, and my Dad. That's my dad's Plymouth and the company truck. This business also has a 3 stall shop with a tire room and utilized a flat bay, a pit and a dual post lift. It's still there and owned by my mother, but he passed in 1996.

My pop taking inventory circa 1960s

The tire rack held B.F. Goodrich and Atlas tires (note the paper wrapped tires and the military tires) My Dad and Grandpa late 40s or early 50s

My Dad posing circa 1980s

OldMechanik , awesome pictures ! Where at in western Il ?

Here's one that someone has at least restored the outside. Don't know about lifts or any other mechanicals inside.

My dad's old station is now a medical marijuana dispensary. Who would have thought?
I remember changing a clutch in a taxi while my dad and the taxi driver had coffee. I think the car was a Ford Falcon, took maybe an hour. The charge was $25.00 including parts.

Even though I cant contribute anything about tools to this site and came here to help my ill cousin as many know this site has really been a lot of fun ..

In the 50's my Uncle owned the Only Mobile ( I should say gas station ) around for miles and miles .. they of course did repairs and everyone knew him .. the roads in those days were dirt and gravel .. now all paved and those from long island would be surprised to know it was at the corner of Jericho and 110 where the 1-800 flowers is now ..

people had a close relation to their station from stories my mom would tell me .. her brother, my uncle was much older then her ..

we used to travel out from Brooklyn to the "wilderness" to visit and I look fondly back at that station .. I found this photo that kind of reminds me of his ..

Amazing - what a small world! We ate at Cruizer's Cafe when we drove up to PA to buy some furniture from a furniture place called Colonial Funiture (check it out - quality furniture made there at a decent price). I thought Cruizer's was a cool place! - we live in Maryland not too far from the PA line.

This station is on Rte 169 in Brooklyn Ct. It was taken by an aquantance and I will give her the credit for the photo. If she *Kim Higgins Marchand* has objection to my posting the photo,I will remove it.

Nice photo zip95864 !
I was actually there about a month ago hooking up with the Grandparents so my daughter could spend a couple weeks with them.
That place is impressive.

JC23 ,
I think the chamber of commerce has tourist info. There was stuff inside but it was closed when we were there.

Here's one that probably came too close to disappearing.
Fortunately it was saved by someone who needs to join the GJ !

Couple of months ago my sis and I were headed down to my place we see a sign for an auction where an old gas station is going to be sold. We stop by to check it out and I snapped a couple shots of it with my old phone.

Time goes by and this thread gets started so one saturday on the way to my place my daughter and I make a quick stop for a photo at every old station I could think of on the several routes I can choose from to get to my place.

We pull up to the site pictured so I could snap a few shots.
Couple fellas are working on the place and one is the new owner.

Turns out the sale included the old General Store next door.

The General Store that CLOSED ITS DOORS in 1968.

WITH ALL of its inventory still inside .......

Where it remained until the auction earlier this year !!
I almost cried when I heard that.

Anyhow the new owner , Roger if I remember correctly gave us a small tour and history of the place.

Built during the Model T days it still has the pit to the side of the building for oil changes.
Walls in the station are being reinforced and metal roofs have been put on the store and station.

From the sound of it ,the owner of this property came very close to what BB767 walked into with the old Johnson place.
Unfortunately many of the old fixtures and mechanicals of the station and store were sold off separately.
When time permits , I will stop by again to get updates on the rebuild.

Here's a shot of the back of the station , the back half was rotted away and is being recreated.
The second shot is the oil pit , and then one of the buildings west side

What a cool thread. To those out there thinking of buying an old service station, do your research. Meaning, find out what's underneath in terms of gasoline storage tanks and the like. If you only want the property for your own use, find out if it would be better to have them dug up or not and the cost. Last thing you want is the EPA breathing down your neck to clean up something that took place on the property 40-50 years ago and they're coming after you b/c you're the sorry SOB that now owns the property. :wtf:

Looks shut down. Anything going on?

The top two pics are of a very sad town somewhere along route 66 (drive across the country with my wife and our cat ----- moving back to California from Boston). The place was shut down insides empty.

The third pic was now a service station museum? Also read it has been in movies. That's all I know ----- we took a ton of pics of old 1940's and 50's motels too.

The Conoco station is in Shamrock Texas.
After seeing that and some of the rest of the town , it got me thinking about how things were before 4 lane highways.
I started a thread "Route 66" in Free Parking.
Its not about 66 specifically but all the lifestyle and community lost along the major 2 laners of days gone by.

This is the old gas station in Folsom New Mexico. It was still in use when I was a kid in the 60's and 70's.

These old stations bring back a lot of memories.
Summers were hot. Roads were rough. Cars were unreliable. As a kid, one felt "safe", when you were near a service station, in a remote area.

Here is one near my home with the Chevelle out front. The gas pumps were removed about 15 years ago, but it's been empty much longer than that.

Talk about weird! I was whippin' down GA Hwy 36 yesterday, just west of Jackson (never been down this stretch before) and my head whips around so hard, my wife thought I was gonna break my neck. I recognized the old store from the pics that 408 posted a few weeks ago. Small world!

I'd kill to have that Massey Ferguson sign. My girlfriends dad has 2 of them.

That's funny! Sadly, the main sign on the roof was taken down not to long ago.

Thanks, it wasn't always that way!

When you do stop by, hand him a paper with the GJ info on it and ask him to join. Then snap a few pics!!!

Is the flatbed truck his also? Looks like it will fit right in with the station.

My body shop was a Mobil gas station when I was a kid. It was built in 1948. Nothing too fancy, but it is neater than a pole-barn!

When I opened about 7 years ago:

And after adding on 5 years ago:

100_2535.jpg

Slowly collecting anything Mobil I can afford. Once I get enough of a collection, I will deck out the office area.

Sadly, a tornado hit about 12 years ago and took the former shop owners house. Including his pictures and "tokens" of this shop through the "good ol days" :(
