I searched and didn't find much on this.

So I wanted to update the lighting in my 3 car garage. currently it only has 2 2 bulb t8 fixtures and dosent put off enough light. It's a finished garage with 8ft ceiling. the garage is about 30x24.

For budget reasons I was going to move the current 2 fixtures and add 4 and use direct drive led tubes. I can do this for $210 plus wire. And If i did 7 more that would be $340 plus wire.

If I did 6 fixtures total I would be getting 26,400L output and 9 would give me 39,600L.

I started to look at the led roll lights.

http://www.lightingever.com/waterproof-led-strip-5050-4100063-dw-us.html

I can get 50m of lights with 720L output a meter that gives me 36,000L of light on a 110v plug. these are 120v lights not the 12 volt. They cost$129 and i will need some more plug ends and clips at $20 or so.

Only thing is it pulls 720w over the 9 fixtures that would pull 324w

They make clips to mount instead of the tape. I could get some 1/4 x 1.25 strips to mount the lights if I needed to and just screw the 1/4 into the studs

Has anyone tried to do this or seen this done?

I've been thinking about this too. Make some sheet metal enclosures to reflect the light and just mount the strips of lights inside.

If you try it, I would be interested in pictures.

Think that original post never responded with actual LUX measurements...........suspect it was very low compared to a conventional fixture. ????????

I did this a few months back. Great to highlight architectural detail but it doesn't give off too much light.

There are a few things that would bother me about that solution, first being the Kelvin temperature (k°) of 6000!

That's blue (or cold in colour), and unless that's the colour you are going for??

As an example the regular A19 lamps that you currently use in your house comes in at 27k (warm in colour, as does the 3000k.

Most office spaces will use a 3500k range as it falls into the "neutral temperature" category.

And 4100k is typically what you would find in pharmacies or other similar retail spaces. This is known as cool white.

The second thing that would bother me is that those liner stick on LED's only give out 120° of light distribution, which if you mount them directly to the ceiling surface will be okay, but if you wanted to have any light go above that mark.........well you won't.

There is also a colour consistency to worry about with the "tape light" LED's, in that the manufacturers will often take the cheapest LED's they can get to populate their boards.

What that means is that each roll of LED's will likely look a little bit off compared to the next.

Again if that doesn't bother you, then go for it.

There are some better option to consider, and that would be by contacting a local lighting distributor that could get you a "chip on board" LED light fixture, that will give you a considerable more amount of lumens/ft, and admittedly a bit more money, but the quality and quantity of light will be much better.

Again if this is just a shed, or an area that you only park your car in, then have at it as the quality of light really doesn't matter then.

I hope I haven't confused you, I just thought that I would share a bit of knowledge with the group.

Thanks for all of the replies guys. Just from a day of searching it seems like there are a lot if variables. Led type, color, light output.

The reason I chose to try the le brand was they had the most consistent reviews. The light output would be more then 6 led fixtures I'm my garage with a lot more even light.

They are 5050 led lights that are 3 times brighter than the 3528 led and are 60 lights per meter. From what I found there are a lot of different configurations. And this place has the best setup.

I was concerned about the 6k light output. I think I'm going to get a string of the 12v for my workbench and see how it looks from that set.

The other thing it was different and about 1/4 of the cost to do this iver led fixtures. And these mount with clips and not sticky tape. And they are 110v not 12v so I won't have to get 12v transformers. And this set is one complete roll. Just cut as needed and add a plug to the end.

I calculated I can fit 6 strands in my garage with 6" away from the wall on the ends and 42" spacing with the 21" on the first and last set to space out the lighting. I will post pics from my computer with the spacing marked on the floor.

Let me play devil's advocate for a minute...
Notice in the ad that it says these are good for decorative lighting, etc. It doesn't say that it's good for general illumination.
These are 14.4watts and 720 lumens per meter. That's only 50 lumens per watt, which is VERY poor performance.
720 lumens in 1 meter is not even HALF what you can get out of real LED lighting. For instance...a 60w incandescent light bulb produces 800 lumens.
6000k is a very odd color choice, which tells me that the diodes they are using are blemished from some factory. Probably straight out of the dumpster.
No information on beam spread.
Only a 1 year warranty. Very poor.
Internet supplier from China. Good luck if there's a problem.

These are just my observations. Good luck with your project.

Yeah, I have my concerns. I ordered a 16' strop if them to see how it looks.

But this whole roll pits out 36,000 which his more then the 6 fixtures I wanted to put up and a little but less than 9 fixtures in my 20x30 garage.

The 6k colour temperature is going to make that floor of yours look like **** (my opinion).

I'm sure there has to be an IKEA near by that you could go and check out.

I say IKEA because I've noticed that they have display boards, and you can play around with them.

There is often a setting that will allow you to change the colour temperature, as well as simply play with colour mixing.

A clip system is always better than using just the tape, but if you have bought the tape light system then I would suggest using an epoxy to hold the tape light in place and not the two way tape.
