Those look great!

Will this be for parking only? Or for working on cars also?
How these will hold up to a floor jack and jackstands?

For both! Over the Winter I will jack up my Corvette and my father says that will be no problem because under the tiles there's a special underground.

The special underground (under the tiles) is called Elastorapid Zweikomponenten Kleber in Germany :)

The floor looks great. What makes the material underneath the tiles unique? I must say I don't know a lot about tiling but am seriously considering doing my garage with them.

On a separate note, I lived in Germany for 1.5 years when I was there in the Army in the mid 80's. I was able to visit again this Sept/October and take in the Porsche Museum (my dream car) and Octoberfest. We had a great time and Germany is one of my favorite countries! I am actually thinking about arranging a "guy" trip to do something like that again but maybe taking in the Porsche factory, BMW, and or Mercedes and then heading up to Octoberfest for a few days. If anyone is interested, let me know!

The material under the tiles is rubber like. So the tiles cannot break so easy because they spring a little bit. Also they don't let the wetness between "zement" (<- is that right?) an tiles.

Elastorapid is also available in the USA! The name of the Company is mapai

Very cool that you like Germany  I would like to travel to Chicago next year. Where you were stationed in Germany?

If you really want to visit Germany next year... Let me know

OKTOBERFEST?

Here in the states, the two mortars that Mapei sells for this purpose are Kerabond/Keralastic and Granirapid.

http://www.mapei.it/Referenze/Multimedia/Kerabond-Keralastic_TDS_EA.pdf

http://www.mapei.com/public/COM/products/GranirapidSystem_TDS_EA.pdf

When you say they do not let the wetness in, what you are talking about is that these highly modified mortar systems do not absorb water. The benefit to that is that they are very highly freeze/thaw stable. They also provide the benefit of a little give to help prevent crack transference. This ability can be enhanced further with the use of a crack isolation membrane.

Thanks, youre right! I can not explain it in english so well...
We had the problem that the floor was not exactly before. So my father must balance that with cement. We didn't have enough space for other materials. Otherwise we would have no straight edges. I hope I do not have so many mistakes in the text... :)

No, you're doing fine. Here we call that "balancing," floating. That is where you take a mortar and level out a surface, or bring it into plane. Does your father work in the tile trade?

This floor looks amazing, very high class. German cars and tile flooring should bring a smile to Jack. Wonder if he is looking at this thread now..

The more I see tile the more I like it as a floor. I was always woriied about cracking and like you, we have a lot of cold weather so the freeze/thaw cycles are always a concern. I will definitely check out Mapei when I get to that point. I think black looks terrific but are you worried about it showing all the dirt?

I actually live just north (about an hour drive) of Chicago. Let me know when you are coming. We can meet up. I was stationed in Butzbach and then Kirchgoens. Both towns were just north of Frankfurt, close to Giessen.

We had a great time at Octoberfest this year. Love the German beer! I also went when I was there in 1985. Where in Germany are you?

Oh thanks, I'll tell him :). German cars are just as good as your cars? American cars are just bigger than ours here in Europe.

Next week this baby sleeps in our new garage =)

Noooo Butzbach?? I do not live directly in Frankfurt. I live in Wohnbach near Münzenberg 15 km from Butzbach. My company also manages the Degerfeldschule in Butzbach. This is the school in the Barracks.

Wenn es winter ist muss man ja damit rechnen dass es dreckig wird. In the summer already looks different from all =)

I also can make a photo from the Mapai product that we have used and my father can call Mapai for you =)

It's a line from a move "Ferris Buellers Day Off" It's about a kid skipping school and ends up taking his dads Ferrari out for a joy ride. Here you go, you can read about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferris_Bueller's_Day_Off A funny movie. Ben Stein is an actor who played the part of the teacher and was taking attendance. When he got to Bueller he kept calling his name multiple time. You would have to know who Ben Stein is and hear his voice to understand it. So Bueller...Bueller....Bueller has become a memorable line among people who hads seen the movie

BTW (by the way) nice looking Vette and nice looking job on the garage tiles

WOW! Small world! I really liked being stationed in Butzbach because it was right in town. I know some German but "ein bisschen"! Whqt kind of school is it your company manages?

Thanks for the offer but I found the info for Mapai. I am definitely going to be looking more closely at their products for my floor. I know our weather is similar to yours.

I have accidentally written German. I wanted to say that the garage in winter is always dirty. =) And with black tiles, it is even worse.

My father always work with mapai, PCI and schlüter-systems.

Thats the best here in Germany.

The Company where I work manages the Computer networks in schools. And the "Degerfeldschule" in Butzbach is near the Prison and your old army Barracks.

Your barracks are now cheap apartments for rent but the most of that are empty as ghost houses. I can take a photo if you want ;)...

Kevin54 did a great job explaining "Bueller." It is a colloquialism used in many contexts, based on the film. I use it when someone is suspiciously absent, but that doesn't translate very well (even in English) :bounce: !

I have shown your tile floor to my wife, who said it looks better than our kitchen!

Floor looks excellent!!!! I love the BMW 1-series 5 door hatchback. I am drooling! I wish they would import that vehicle to the US. I had to settle for 3-series wagon, yes I know life is rough. Cheers on the excellent looking garage and nice rides.

Cheers,

Chuck

Thanks for the Compliment =)...

The BMW is my company vehicle. All cars of our company are BMW 1 or 3. And Mercedes E or CLS for the bosses =)... Nice choice to your car! Is BMW 1 not available in the States?

Wonderful layout there. That is a big garage for Germany (I used to live near Frankfurt until 1991). In the US we only get the 1 series coupe but not the hatchback.

Hehe thanks... You're right, that's a big garage for Germany! In Summer it will be finished then I will post some pictures. In Germany this BMW is a "Pussywagon" :) But it's okay :)

GerTom, the floor looks great. When I was doing mine, I also though about all black as well. But when I started my project, my garage was way too dark, and I though the floor would not help. Looking at yours, it looks great. I even like the fact that your father din't center the tile above each other. That floor will last you forever with no maintenance.
