I’ve been spending a fair bit of time on another forum that more centers around chainsaws and other outdoor stuff and the level of drama there has gotten to the point that I don’t think I’m gonna go back anytime soon. The entire atmosphere here at Garage Journal is so much better. Not near the arguing or drama. People post stuff and things just click here. I like that. So a big thank you to the entire staff team here for keeping it that way. Without them this place would also most likely be a drama filled swamp.

Anyway …… Pops and I got a bunch of dirt hauled for the latest endeavor on the farm.
IMG_4367.jpeg

There is a bit of a timeline gap here as we got a TON of stuff cleaned up to put this little dirt patch here.
IMG_4368.jpeg

Hey look it’s Mike in his shed hauling truck !!
IMG_4369.jpeg

The calves were outgrowing their hutches so “we” decided a little shed was in order to put them in.
IMG_4371.jpeg

It is a very well built little thing. Next up, build some pens inside it !!

I agree, this forum is my favorite, no bs just people sharing their garage, projects, toys and ideas.

Saw some combines out in southern Mn today, most of my customers are saying the weekend if it don’t rain much.

Hope you have a good harvest!

I spent way too much time on that chainsaw forum several years ago, and it was like that back then also. Gotta' love GJ!

I paid $20 for the big load of totes that had mulch colorant in them and $40 for the ones that had new motor oil in them.

Our beans are turning quickly the last week or so. It won’t be long and we’ll be munching acres off !!

How are they yielding so far ? Better or worse than expected ?

That’s fair I suppose.

Those beans were an eighty of short season beans. They yielded a little better than 65 bushels to an acre. They were irrigated, but we never ran the pivot over them after we watered them out of the ground. We could have irrigated them at the end of the season, and picked up some test weight, but I don’t think it would have been enough to pay for irrigating it.

We got rained out, just as we finished, it started to sprinkle as we were unloading the draper head onto the trailer. Been raining since.

Great project, how much longer will little Miss Annie the calf and the bad boys be pinned.
Thank you for sharing, I really enjoy looking into your part of the world with my coffee.
All my cattle are in “total confinement” barns where they don’t get to go on pasture. They do go outside the building sometimes but that is when someone chews on something and finds a portal to the other side when the gate opens up. Then we go chasing each other around lol

Mike, I have stopped giving people a piece of my mind.. At my age I have to keep every piece that still works. The GJ is also my safe place.
This one was $6500 and the most expensive one we looked at by almost $2k but it’s built like an actual shed.
My time gets more valuable every day. In a decade (or three) you will be thanking your younger self for buying something you haven't had to rebuild and isn't falling down.

A least he got the head unhooked. Customer of mine blew a steer tire last night and dumped the truck and trailer sideways in the ditch...came out with just a bump on his elbow thank God.
Head unhooked and looks like downwind of the crop, definitely saved some stuff there.
Marc and @moab11, My admiration for family farmers grows every day. A hailstorm, drought, or something burning down somehow has a bright side. Sometimes I forget how lucky all of my 29,596 days have been (404 days to another big milestone).
I probably should stop using that 'Days between dates calculator' but I'm thrilled to have made it past day 7,661. :Violent:

Bob, we used to joke (as farmers ourselves) that the farmer is never satisfied, the ever-pessimist. Too much/not enough rain, crop prices are ALWAYS too low, etc.

We had bad days on the farm/ranch, but no matter what, we always made the best out of it. Even during the tough times, we'd find some fun during the day. I'd take a bad day farming over a good day banking any day of the week.

plastic fuel tanks and rubber tires removes any thought of rebuilding
On Martin's friend's burnt combine? John Deere combines don't have plastic fuel tanks. Tractors yes, combines no.
But to your point, tires, gallons upon gallons of oil and fuel, soybean-based body panels, and everything else in there still renders it a total loss. This applies to old machinery too though.

Marc, in my childhood summers in Vermont I walked the half-mile every day to help out on a family farm. If I helped, the four foster kids could play with me when the chores were done. Didn't make any money but I wouldn't trade those days for anything else. A fair bit of that play time involved fort building in an abandoned slate quarry. Sketchy doesn't begin to describe the rooves roofs on those forts.

I purchased a pair of silage wagons with almost brand new running under them last summer with the intent of selling the silage boxes and making new hay trailers out of the wagons. Time to do hay trailer things !!
IMG_4547.jpeg

The rear hitches weren’t long enough so I fabricobbled an extension for one wagon.
IMG_4542.jpeg

Once both wagons were stretched out to the proper length we swapped trailers. Loft the first one up and drag the other trailer under.
IMG_4571.jpeg

I can’t believe it worked as well as it did !
IMG_4572.jpeg

Now I have two tandem wagons to put under gravity boxes that’ll live behind a larger wagon. Photo to show tax guy the newish minivan is indeed my farm rig :lol_hitti

So are those going right into the paint booth then? You take those out on the road you'll have both the green guys and the red guys giving you **** that you need to paint them lol.

Why are you swapping frames out? Those new ones don't look much heavier than the old ones.
I have the same questions lol

If the mismatched colors are the worse thing that neighbors grumble about I’ll be quite happy lol. The old green hay trailers went under red gravity wagons so it’s a four trailer mismatch now :lol_hitti

I bought the red trailers to build another set of racks and decided that having four 24’ hay trailers with only one guy mostly hauling didn’t make sense. The JD trailers were getting some sway to them and they were wandering around quite a bit under the hay trailers. Being 16’ from front to rear makes it a fair bit worse than if they’re shortened almost all the way up like they are under the gravity wagons so we thought it made more sense to put the new ones under the hay trailers and the old ones under the gravity wagons. They’re all 12 ton wagons so no capacity was gained, just less swaying. The two gravity boxes they went under had 10 ton wagons so they got an upgrade I suppose. Now I have two 10 ton running gears with no tops and am brainstorming about what to put in them. Maybe I can build Mama Bear a new pair of campers on them lol

Here are all three smaller gravity boxes in a row after they were swapped as well.

Soybeans coming out !!!!!!! Dang things are quite green yet but the grain is dry.
IMG_4681.jpeg

Someone either forgot to put the spinners on or is planning on baling that soybean straw.
IMG_4646.jpeg

Holy soybeans fuzz Batman !!
IMG_4686.jpeg

I have a Cummins powered air compressor and a fancy new air wand deal and they made short work of cleaning the cooling packages on the combine.
IMG_4687.jpeg

Look at that nicely operating head its perfectly functional airbar. Mmmmmmmmhmmmmmm. Pops called not long after this while I was on my way out of the field. “Yeah hey, the air fan made some expensive sounds and now the fan isn’t working”. “Oh for **** sake”. Turns out the fan impeller grenaded itself and sent shrapnel into the hose and blasted all kinds of knife shaped holes into itself. Turns out the fan impeller is a wear item, or so says the Crary dealer I called. He said “that thing spins at Mach Jesus and will explode when the fins get sharp. Were they getting sharp?” I guess so !!!

So, you have to check to see if the blades are getting sharp based on how easy it can cut a piece of paper?

Don’t know lol. Sales guy just said to check how sharp they are. I didn’t know it was a wear part and now I may need new lots of stuff lol.
I never heard of a fan being a wear item, but I guess the dirt from the field and from what you said it’s spinning really fast must be creating a sand blasting effect on the edge of the blade.

But why does it come apart after the blades get sharp? Is the rivets getting blasted and become weak too?

I’ve only closely inspected it after it blew up so I feel a little inspector gadgety BUT it looked to all be one big cast piece. Not sure what wore or how but Mach Jesus seems fast for the fan to spin. The soybean dust is quite abrasive

We wrapped up soybeans a few weeks back with the test plot being the last of them to come out. They did from 59.9-76.5 so a nice and decent spread across maturities.
IMG_4703.jpeg

Mama Bear and I were looking to get a different camper so Pops and I went to check them out and we found one I liked. I told Mama Bear about it and after a bit of discussion and YouTube watching we decided it was the camper for us. We slept on it and decided that spending $43,000 on a camper to replace a camper we had that worked fine wasn’t the best thing at the moment. So Pops bought it lol. They’ve been talking about something nicer than their pop up for a while and this is certainly that. 2026 Grand Design Imagine 2470BH. It’s quite nice. I’m gonna have to get a Brinkley when we upgrade now to outdo him lol.
IMG_4719.jpeg

I went to check on harvest progress on a large dairy I sold some seed corn to. They were chopping it with a Claas 990 on tracks. I rode along on the chopper for a while and what a beast lol. 35ton silage getting mowed off 30’ at a time going 4mph. Just eating it !! I got some drone footage of the chopper and the guys on the silage pile and shared them with the dairyman. It was a dang good time !!

The little dude and I got a few loads of soybean straw hauled home. These new wagons don’t sway at all. Quite an upgrade !!

If your pop is going from a popup to a hard side, then that was a major upgrade!
I don't miss the popup, but I do miss camping.
No kidding. I’ve spent countless nights in that popup as a youngster.

What drone do you use?
It’s a Magic 3 Enterprise with some goodies on it like Drone Deploy so we can measure silage piles and other things.
