I have a nice P.S.&W Co. 10" Samson bit brace. Came with quite the pile of bits, which was part of the reason I got it. Will upload some pics once I hit my 5 post minimum.

Okay, the pile of bits was the main reason I got it. The fluted drill bits are near impossible to find, as most got the square tapered shank cut off for use with more modern equipment.

I have a few of the fluted drill bits.
I spent some time cleaning and lubing the Peck Stowe & Wilcox monkey wrenches yesterday.

“Fluted drill bits” makes me think of the small-diameter bits for push drills. I guess most drill bits (except spade bits) are fluted, spirally. But the photos show brace bits, not drill bits. Are you describing countersinks and reamers?
Holy graphic layout, PLANofMAN!
What do you use to get the comic book caption / panel borders theme on your photos? I really like that!

I’ve always thought the convention was

Auger bits shown in his last picture

Bit stock twist drill for second to last picture ( these do have twisted flutes )

(Straight);fluted drills for the things that come with Yankee push drills

Then there are so many sub division inside each, ship augers, German pattern, coach makers, fast twist, hardwood, softwood, construction (or electricians)

A few years ago I found a Steel Screw #4 clamp at a flea market. Photos on page 2, post #34. On Friday I found a #5., missing it's anvil, unfortunately. It's a sunny day, so I took some photos together in natural light. The dates on the frame and the wingnut refer to the three Whitney patents: design patent D18,376 (Jun 5, 1888) for the frame, utility patent 385,983 (Jul 10, 1888) for the frame, and utility patent 388,007 (Aug 14, 1888) for the screw.

Comica app for android. It's free. Got it for the photo filters, kept it for the comic book panel options and captions. It just keeps everything clean and interesting looking, and I don't have to upload 5 different photos to show detail shots. Edit: and it's easy to use. Just select the "multi" option on the front page of the app.

The top three have a different tip angle than the bottom 5. Did they come together?

I always wonder why they thought those were better, maybe better for wood instead of metal.

The ones with a lot of taper are for drilling wood. The ones with a more modern looking taper are for metal.

Edit: my pile of 8 "bitstock twist drill bits" thank you for the correct term, were all for metal.

Picked up an otherwise unmarked “13” today. Seems like it should be a descendant of a No3. No web pattern, straight back. But the square-lipped jaw and batwing grip make me think PS&W. Anyone know different?
EDIT - thinking it may actually be Stearns.

I was going through some pictures and found some of this PS&W early rivet set. The subject of rivet sets came up recently on the Garage Sale thread. This one is likely earlier than the catalog listing.

Wow! Before you ground the end, I don't know which was the bigger danger, a chip flying off the hammer-flared end, or cutting your hand on the "petals" of the flowered end! Either way, a tetanus shot would be necessary.

Hi All, new guy here and I have a question. I have a Pexto 5 inch lineman pliers with the oval logo. It is also stamped "S.C.U.S.A" above the logo. That stamp does not appear to be done at the time of forging. I think it may be military as they were my father's, and he got them from my grandfather who was in the Navy in WW2. However, my uncle told me that my grandfather's Navy tools, simply had Navy stamped on them. Would anyone have an idea what the S.C.U.S.A. would be?

...Having said that, there is no little to no doubt it my mind that the smaller symbol with little to no center and fatter, sharper-cornered rays belongs to Peck, Stow, and Wilcox, due to the examples of it accompanying the "WORTH" TM. ...
...That footnote hasn't been discussed before.

It reads:

"For better distribution service, certain Wholesale Distributors sell these tools under their own private brands. All carry this copyrighted symbol (*) in addition to the brand name. It is your protection - look for this symbol."
I saw this pair of WORTH* marked snips today at the flea. Snapped a pic for this thread.

I grabbed this rusty cross pein hammer Saturday morning at an estate sale up the street. After cleaning off the rust, this faint Pexto marking appeared.

PEXTO (Peck Stow & Wilcox) No. 1 5-piece "Radio Socket Set"

1/4" hex drive with detent ball. Shaft of driver handle has two "stops" pressed into the end to prevent socket from sliding all the way up shalf. Sockets are bare steel, and have both "PEXTO" and size stamped on them (except the knurled "radio" socket, which does not have any size stamping.) 5/16" hex socket is cracked. Box is in great condition. Note price code on bottom of box in grease pencil.

* Can somebody please fix the TITLE on this thread? It's "STOW", not "STOWE". Thanks!

I snagged this little "perfect handle" style ****** at the flea this morning. The unusually abrupt drop off on the shoulder caught my eye. PEXTO branded the monkey wrenches and screwdrivers they made with single SOL(ID STEEL) BAR construction with the portmanteau, "SOLBAR". The numeral "2" marking refers to the shank length.

Mark S listed it as Peck Stow and Wilcox
?? It is. He is correct. Maybe I'm missing your point, but that was solved last year (page 2, post #76), and I posted the same ad back in March (page 3, post #109) when we were discussing the asterisk TM.

What's odd about the Tool Bar is that they TMed the term "Tool Island." They were obviously fascinated with the concept.

I like Tool Bar better.

More the fact that the ad didn’t say PS & W, but Mark knew it was.

I missed your prior posting of the ad, I searched for the phrase Tool Bar in this thread, and when it missed, decided not to reread all 140 posts. Getting lazy I fear.

This #8 divider(?) had a lot of rust and it came out nice, along with the moving jaw shown, but now they have no patina, no appeal at all…hate that. So…what to do? I can see disassemble and buff lightly for the pexto, but the Stillson , when all done will look awful…how can I get a decent aged look back?…lampblack?🤣. New evaporust works better than the old stuff…so I should put the thing in molasses and salt water for a few months?A3F4E3D1-8A07-483C-9677-F93972EBC27D.jpeg

I picked up these No. 50 Carpenter's Pincers at the flea this morning. I don't normally bring home blacksmiths' nippers and tongs and the like, but I thought these were unusual with the screwdriver blade and the nail puller. Turns out to be carpenters' pincers, which makes sense. This is a serious, substantial tool that was made in several OAL's between 6" and 12".

I've taken the liberty of forwarding your photos to datamp.org because that one isn't on their site.
I'm sure Stan will be able to confirm the details.
Some of those old clamps are almost as much "art" as "tool".

MrsLS & I were out today, and hit an antiques & **** store, where I paid much more than I should have for this gorgeous clamp with a rotating anvil. No regrets. 91F3F7B1-4B36-414D-BA2A-05B4F8CA390A.jpegE249A6B3-B56E-495C-8530-21C21E16F766.jpeg
I think that rotating anvil feature is pretty scarce. I have a somewhat similar P.S.&W. clamp with an 1888 patent, but it doesn't have that feature. Very attractive clamps.
