I'm the same way. Especially in pawn shops. I know they really don't give a damn if I buy anything or not, but if I'm standing there with cash in my hand the least they can do is not hit me with attitude. I mean if they wanna price the **** high, fine. If they don't like my offer, fine. But I don't need to be talked down at like a criminal.
this is close to my pet peeve with tools, used tools that is.
tools are tools, they work or they don't. but just because it's used and you know it still works doesn't mean it should sell for 10% under new price, anybody can get 10-20% off of new just by going to a store.
the last time i was at a pawn shop i was trying to trade in a junky old chicago pneumatic impact that i got for 15 bucks at another pawnshop in town (same pawn shop, different location), decided i didn't need it anymore because it served it's purpose. i also brought with me a 3/4 cp772h that was well used but only a year old and worked perfectly just to see what i could get because i don't need 2 3/4 impact guns.
i told the guy at the counter i wanted to see if he would do a trade for a snap-on im30 (real old and beat up i might add). because i need a 3/8, and have too many 1/2 and 3/4 guns. i already know that the pawn shops love to throw around the snap-on tax if it has the name on it. and the price on the snap-on was 60 bucks lol.
he took my guns and looked at the CP on the side, and straight up said "yeah i don't know if we can give you much for these harbor freight guns to do a trade for a snap-on". i had to set him straight and tell him that CP is not central pneumatic, that is chicago pneumatic. and that gun he was holding cost 400 a year ago. he took a few seconds and checked the serial numbers and goes "wow, yeah i guess your right these are pretty good". then proceeds to tell me that he can give me 20 in credit for the "big one" and 10 for the "little one" and id' need to hand over 20 for the im30.... i told him to let me test it first and see.
lo and behold the snap-on didnt even turn with the compressor hooked up. he tested mine and both worked great. so i told him that i'd trade just the 1/2 since his gun didnt work and mine did. and he could easily sell a working impact instead of hoping somebody wants to buy a dud, i could maybe find parts for the gun and fix it, or be out some money on parts, but they would have to spend money on labor and parts to get it working, not gonna be worth it.
he took the trade and i left with my 3/4 and the im30, so i basically traded a crappy CP impact that i bought from another branch of the same pawn shop, for a gun they wanted to label as 4-6x as expensive. now you know they are full of ****. (also when i got home i found that the power selector for the snapon was all the way down. it worked just fine)
all the **** aside, i try not to go to pawn shops anymore, even if you can find the odd deal. it isn't worth having some guy behind a counter tell you that you are holding ****, and they are selling gold no matter what you bring in.
