I would like to carefully clean up that ugly hinge repair.
I wouldn't touch it. That repair, however unsightly (personally, it wouldn't bother me, but I can see how it might bother others), is part of the box's history. It might've been done last year or in 1989 or in 1973, but, it just might've been done in 1943. If it was busted, maybe. But that's just me and I'm a purist with a very light touch. You may get different opinions.

I could see sanding the high spot on the weld, and a little paint, I would probably do that if I were making the repair in the field.

I've been slacking, this is my Plomb world for the last 6 weeks or so.

teh body hammer seems to have an original handle that is fractured but usable. I got the puller on the bay, description 'see pics' the ground jaws were not shown at all the seller was willing to refund, but I went half, as the case is nice, and my bid wasn't fairly lowball.
The two wrenches in the puller box are nice, but ground for clearance for some unknown task. Eventually I'll take a stab at building the jaws back up. the bigger short DBE is actually a Proto LA, and its a size pairing that wasn't offered by Plomb, duplicates one end of the smaller one.

Lugz -- I hadn't considered that point of view but now that I think about it, I agree. Your very fine reason (primary) AND the possibility that I could make it worse (secondary), I'll leave it be as you and others have opined.

I had mentioned earlier, this box was my second. I posted the first a couple years ago. Here is a family portrait. I used the panorama feature on my iPhone; I guess I was not steady which makes the trays look wavy and bent. It is straight. I was surprised by the color difference in the green paint. For the experts, any known explanation? Is it a clue to birth year?

Thanks for all of you for your supportive comments.

I received this Plomb box from the eBay seller this afternoon. It is the key item in putting together my 1/2” drive set. I had most of the pieces but it will still need some tweaking, like replacing the Pebble ratchet with one with a round handle. The items I’m missing are marked on the catalog listing. I’ve added some extras.

Very nice family portrait ! Hopefully you did not take our responses as hopping on you or otherwise being excessive... I have a few items that I "cleaned" up when I was new to the collectible antiques that are now worth next to nothing because I messed with them or over did it on clean up. I am glad you are leaving the box as is and glad to see it also has a stable mate [emoji51]

Slew,
Mine is totally unmarked and it’s the second one like it I’ve found. It looks very Plomb-like so I figured it could live in this set. The sliding tee is also unmarked. Neither tool is specified for the set but they look to me like they belong. The long and short extensions are on the way to me as is a 21/32” socket I just found online. The round handle ratchets are fairly common so I’m waiting for the right one to come along. The pin handle and the 31/32” socket may be more difficult to find.

Hmm '32 catalog says 10" long, pn 'DL', or 5486.
Apparently mine is newer, '42 catalog says 14", still calls it a 5486
'
My only 32fs socket is welded to an oil filter cup, just as I got it.

These slight distinctions are common among the smaller boxes of the same type and markings, too. Either different paint batches (either in time, mixture, or even factory) or different environmental conditions of where the two boxes were stored over the years. You want to see grown men argue at vein popping road rage levels of angst about paint numbers, go to G503.com, search on "paint spec" and start reading one of the many threads. No two surviving original jeeps have aged exactly alike, either, and yet guys will use them to match paint sources, even though no surviving jeep is exactly indicative of the original factory color.

Don, That set looks awesome in the box. I'll keep my eye out for your missing pieces as I'm out and about.

Thanks. The box was a little hard to find and I was pleasantly surprised by how well the interior cleaned up. When the rest of the tools arrive I’ll take a picture of how the set probably looked originally, without any extras.

Thanks. Thought that paint lots could be the answer. Crazy but understandable re. vein popping.

It's really hard to tell when alot of the boxes were made. It seems like they made a bunch at once and used them for years, only the differences in the decals help to date them

There is something honestly cool about those Plomb boxes with the stylized PL▼MB. Really ads a unique touch to the boxes and brand as a whole.
Proto has had a lot of commercial opportunity with stylizing their "new" name(hopefully in a new and modern way, not simply ripping off what they did in the 50's-60's), surprised they haven't done it.

I joined the Plomb Calker Club today with this pair of 033-1/2 offset jobbies. (Guessing the "O" in the marking is for "offset.") I have to admit that I found it a little odd they were both the same model number, until I got home and discovered that they came in pairs. Normally I'm not that lucky with tools that were supposed to come in pairs (e.g., tappet wrenches), inevitably finding only one and having to look for the mate. I was thinking the reason they are no longer identical is because one has been dressed more than the other, but I noticed that the offsets are not exactly the same so maybe they weren't supposed to be identical. Only an old plumber would know!

notlob was kind enough to post the pertinent catalog page last year, so I will just post a link to his post as a reference, here.

Also found this WF-77 (11/16") 3/8-inch drive swivel socket. You can see the remains of the cadmium plating on the service side of the knuckle. Shown with a Wright MU-56 (11/16") 3/8-inch drive swivel socket that I found with it.

Had another Plomb screwdriver show up today. It was super cheap because of the ground down tip. I got a surprise second driver in the package that wasn't in the add. I looks Plombish in ways. It is stamped Tuck. Anyone know about these? also a 96 1/2 punch. Plomb LA.

Was able to get out to an estate sale and was rewarded for the effort. Been collecting plomb for many years and never ran across one in the wild.
Congrats on that find!

I'm not familiar with Tuck, but agree it does look like Plomb.

I had a Tuck close quarter once. I'll see if I can find it. I don't remember it looking Plomb-like, and it was in the days when I wasn't doing much of any research, so I don't recall knowing anything about the brand.

I scored a massive piece of pebble at the flea market today. A 3062 plomb. I'll see what I can do about the rust, but I'm afraid a few if the spots are here to stay.

Howdy gents!

Well I too find myself chasing these ol pebble wrenches. Getting closer to complete on my combos and single ended flare/line wrenches. 13/16s evade me in both flavors! I've got a dual marked pebbled around the size wrench holding place for now.

Ebay provided me with 1-1/4" and 1-1/2" pebbled line wrenches this week! I do have a few extra to trade if someone has a 13/16s to spare!

Now to find another 7/16" #1214, someone milled it to 1/2" : (

Pulled this off eBay. Regular 3/8 drive Proto 5249 ratchet. However, the handle is mark "PRV" PLVMB TVVL CO". Probably overpaid but it's the only one I've ever seen marked this way.

Sweet deal, and it’s the War Finish model. Nice stuff you guys are coming up with this week.

The WF ratchet.

That 4” wrench  it’s ironic because there are so many Proto out there.

Rag here is something on Tuck. Thought it came up here before.
Yours does look Plombish.

Awesome thanks for the info 3bay! I'm reading through that thread now. I'll post my pics. I believe this solves another mystery of mine. I found a tiny driver with no markings I could read. But it looks identical to his Tuck driver if I remember correctly. Now I have to go look for it!
